I was afraid of this....

I dont think it will hurt recruiting honestly. People know what they see when they see it.
I don't know if it will hurt recruiting or not but I guarantee opposing schools and coaches will use it to their advantage if they think it will help.

I'm actually looking forward to the next call from the Red McCombs Business School for a donation. Man are they going to get an earful. I'm going to request a personal message for ole Red himself;-0

Bucky is going off on Red today on the Horn. says would quit his job if they have him on for an interview.

Hence the old adage: "If nothing good can come from saying something, then by all means...don't say it". Nothing good can come from McCombs' critical comments at this point. Before the hire, maybe seen as just his opinion. It looks really bad for UT for him to be saying those things now, AFTER the hire. Make no mistake...regardless of his intent or what he meant to say...those comments WILL be used against us in recruiting.

I don't understand why people keep on using the plural of rich booster. In fact, there has only been ONE rich booster that's flashed his ass and that one guy is Red McCombs. Joe Jamail hasn't said a negative word that I know about. Neither have the Hicks brothers or any of the other rich Dallas guys. I think we need to stop clumping these boosters. Red is doing this........by himself.
despite the fact that you are correct, JK, we are into mass hysteria over here and lumping is specialty of ours. if you are a rich donor, you are the enemy by God, to hell with your millions of dollars in donations and hard work and good intentions. :D go give your money to the aggies or OU.

seriously, guys. this is one pissed off donor amongst many good ones. and red is still one of the good guys. but he has a loud voice and is having a bit of a snit and rant right now. let it work itself out and don't paint all the others with such a broad brush. Red will get his mind right sooner or later. I still want him on my team.

the rants against the man are as bad as what he's doing. i'm sure as he has time to reflect on his comments, they'll moderate and he'll end up regretting the words. he's gotten caught up in the emotion of the moment. it happens to all of us from time to time.

i know its not the right thing to do and a poor reflection on him, but given all the good he has done, i think we can give him a hall pass for now and understand its just the emotion of the moment. give it a week or two and see how things look.

now that, gentlemen, is what is known as an "opportunity".

by all means, Red, come on the horn for an interview then. ;)

Bucky knows coach strong. When they asked him yesterday if he would be on the new staff. His answer was "not as the rb coach". You may get your wish slim

I get the sentiment but until he apologizes I cant really give him a pass and just cast it off as an old coot who had a bad day. The comments were that bad to me - and its now splashed on a national stage on the front pages of ESPN, all over twitter, and other media

I've seen tweets from players thinking they were racial - as well as others around the country

If he had come back today and said whoops..I didn't mean it like it sounded I could understand and just caulk it up to a bad day...but apparently even a day later he's still making comments on ESPN Dallas

I've heard national radio discussion today mentioning the "Texas good old boy" network and going in to how bad this sounds

Im not saying it was or wasnt that way, but when you call a coach who has fought very hard to get where he is at...especially to even get a head position as an African American it reeks of something really bad to act like he's barely qualified to even be on a coaching staff...never mind a head guy.

Hopefully for the good of everything Red comes out soon and apologizes. I read something where he may speak to Strong today

If you guys don't think Reds comments will not be used in the negative recruiting against the University of Texas you are fooling yourself. Texas needs to get out in front of this as soon as possible. Red has openly stated that the HC at Texas barely has the qualifications to be a coordinator..after having been a HC, and called Case a gimp..no matter what you think of Case or Coach Strong, and no matter how high your regards are for Red you have to want Red to stop the media circus..

yikes....Hogan and Bucky have basically all but called Red a racist today....some of the callers sure have

this is what I was fearing. what a freaking imbecile this guy is!!! embarrassing! i'm sure some recruits will now see Strong as a lame duck since the "power brokers" are not aligned behind him. "it's only a matter of time" is probably what they're thinking. simply pathetic and shameful for the university for this to come out a few hours after the press conference.

Just maybe Strong can turn this into a recruiting positive. Kind of a band-of-brothers (no pun intended) scenario. "Hello (recruit's name), I'm sure you have heard all the chatter about one of our major donors here at Texas. First of all, let me say he does not represent anyone but himself because my reception here and vote of confidence from the University and employees/staff, the players, the students and the city, Austin, has been amazing. You know the best way to silence people like the donor in question and others that have similar prejudices? Prove them wrong and with your help we can do just that. Are you with me?"

You know there has to be a burning desire deep inside many of these recruits to shut-up this crazy, rich old fart and make coach Strong the best coach UT has ever had.

This. Had he stopped saying things yesterday, it would have been easier to dismiss it as talk from a jilted person. But to continue to talk about it again, then you can only call it a premeditated and concerted effort to embarrass the University and/or Coach Strong.

That's not going to be enough to counter "Son, if from the highest level of the program, a man such as Charlie Strong isn't given any respect, how do you think they will treat you? I can tell you right now, if you come play for me at _____ you will be given the respect we both know you deserve. Don't throw your life and and professional career away to be treated as a second class person by a bunch of rich, arrogant racists who don't even care to know your name." Negative recruiting gets brutal.

As they say, "we'll have to agree to disagree" about this. He went public while this is a private board. Not even close.

I get it. I understand what you are saying but I'm just not sure how many 18 year olds give a flip what some donor may think about them, personally, or how they will be treated by said donor/s should they ever meet them.

Furthermore, the highest level of the program is not some billionaire donor, but the President and AD of the University, who happen to be white, and who both had CS at the top of their list from the get-go.

I think recruits are more worried about how they are going to be treated and respected by the coaching staff and administration, will they be coached-up to increase their NFL career possibilities, how much media exposure will be available to them and will they be part of a team that wins and competes for championships.

I think Red's remarks will lose steam and serve only to embarrass himself and not coach Strong and The University.

This is a great post and it sums up how I feel perfectly. I've always liked Red, but this is just too much. I used to frequent a bakery called Joseph's in San Antonio and I would see Red in there regularly (it's next to his building). I chatted with him a few times about UT and attending classes in the building with his name on it and of course about football. I enjoyed those chats and because of that I held him in high regard. The comments he made about Strong and even about Case though are hurtful to me. It's as if I see I side to him I have never known before and it his caused me to question my thoughts about who Red is as a person. I'm sure I'm one of many people that has had these little chance encounters with Red. I can only wonder if they will feel the same way I do. I don't know if I will ever think about him the same anymore. This is a sad day for me.

Also, I think other schools need to think twice about playing the race card given the likes of Earl, Ricky and Vince as examples to counter such a claim. I'm pretty sure our current 30+ NfL players found Red to be no hindrance on their career path.

He can be as p!ssed off as he wishes, but the responsible thing to do is to take it up with Patterson, the individual who made the decision. Instead he goes in from of the media and embarrasses the program REPEATEDLY on a national scale. We should be expected to speak up against how is he acting, not admonished to stop doing it. He can moderate his words and regret how he has acted, but he is a figurehead of the program and can rightfully be expected to act in a manner that doesn't demean the program. Obviously, we can't rely on his judgment in such matters, so we are left with few options to distance ourselves from him and his disgusting actions.

The rants against what the man is doing and what he has been saying are absolutely not as bad as what he is doing. Not even close. Charlie Strong has earned a level of respect as a professional. Each of us should be loudly and publicly demanding Red apologize to Charlie, his family and the fan base for his insensitive and misguided comments. Instead of apologizing, Red chose to amplify his comments. There would have been a hall pass had he apologized on the radio this morning. Since Red chose to elevate the controversy, we are very much entitled to consider Red a pariah until he quite damaging the program and starts cleaning up his mess.

I don't know if it will hurt recruiting or not. But never underestimate what coaches will say and do when recruiting if they think can use something to their advantage.
