I was afraid of this....

We have boosters that have a lot of knowledge about the game.
We have posters who have a lot of knowledge about the game. Every freaking town in Texas has moms and pops that have a lot of knowledge about the game.

Every Tom, Dick and Harry has a lot of knowledge about the game.

Red, go have a beer, light a cigar with a few hundred dollar bills.

Says to Mav, "Son, your ego's writing checks you can't cash."

The implication is that Strong is NOT qualified as a head coach.
^^This.^^

It's frustrating to witness knowing my grandfather, a proud alum, life-long donor and huge football fan would be rolling over in his grave at this crap. Not all old men have these entitled and, dare I say, antiquated views on how the world works. You can only dismiss so much as generational.

I dont think it will hurt recruiting honestly. People know what they see when they see it.

According to JS Red and Charlie are going to talk today. He thinks things will be smoothed over then.

I guess money doesn't buy common sense or decency. Red's putting himself on an island-- going to get pretty lonely there.

Someone needs to check to see if "red" has his current vaccination for rabies. Coach Strong was not only not my choice, but was not even someone that I considered seasoned enough to be under consideration for the HC at Texas. I have done a complete about face since I have done my due diligence of researching into Coach Strong's background and listening and observing him during the press conference yesterday. All I can say at this point is welcome aboard COACH STRONG, you are a definite asset and a huge addition to The University of Texas. I can tell that you will not only hold your coaches and players accountable, but you will hold "yourself" accountable for the product that is produced under your guidance and leadership.

Only if the recruits are swayed by Red McCombs. I don't think too many 17 year olds are.
I agree with you (but not your avatar).

This little story will soon get buried by the next big story in sports, which cannot get here quickly enough.

High schoolers don't know who this old fellow is, or care.

It's a step IF Red and Coach Strong talk today. However, he's already been on radio in the Metroplex and just as hardline as he was yesterday. Coach Strong may seem to be the target of Red's rant, but I think he's really aiming it at Patterson. Red's whizzed off that he wasn't on the committee and that he didn't get a call every fifteen minutes or so from Patterson sharing his thoughts. Red tossed out Chuckie's name, but he's really p**sed off that Patterson, Powers, and whoever else didn't listen to him, pull the trigger, and hire Saban. I wouldn't downplay the effect of Red's rant on recruiting in the short term, but maybe after meeting the new head coach, Red will see what a lot of others, including some BMD's have seen, and STFU.

It wasn't an implication, it was a statement. Red said Strong was an assistant coach, maybe a coordinator but not a head coach.

I'll keep it respectful per Darrell's wishes, but my concern with Red's comments are what we're seeing now. National embarrassment with implications of racism from rich Texas boosters. His comments were and are very damaging and unlike an older relative that says crazy stuff within the family, Red went on an ESPN affiliate which is now getting national air time. Red is a smart guy. You don't make the truckloads of $ he has by being stupid, but to say Strong would be a great position coach and "maybe" a decent coordinator is beyond bizarre. Strong was such a successful DC at schools like Florida where his defenses were largely responsible for 2 National championships, that he was offered the Head gig at Louisville. Louisville was struggling mightily in a weaker conference, but Strong turned things around immediately as the HEAD COACH and went 23-3 in his last 2 seasons. Red had to know this, yet verbalized very negative opinions by getting ignored during the search. I think Red was certainly miffed that his candidate, Gruden, wasn't given an interview and especially after all the $ Red has given Texas etc. Anyway, all his $ is not worth the national embarrassment he has caused our school and our football program. I would have anticipated such reactions from Aggie BMDs when Sumlin was hired, but not from Texas BMDs after Strong's hire.

I don't understand why people keep on using the plural of rich booster. In fact, there has only been ONE rich booster that's flashed his ass and that one guy is Red McCombs. Joe Jamail hasn't said a negative word that I know about. Neither have the Hicks brothers or any of the other rich Dallas guys. I think we need to stop clumping these boosters. Red is doing this........by himself.

I am not sure the backlash will be aimed at us or not, but that is a big concern. It's an unfortunate situation for sure. I hope red issues a statement

He didn't declare Strong as incompetent at all, he said he'd make a GREAT position coach or coordinator. How is that incompetent?
Seems some folks just want to chunk stones at anyone who questions the hire.
Seriously?

This is exactly right. Looks bad to the average dude, but to people that are in the process it is just noise.

Good point

The comments are embarrassing but no one should feel more embarrassed than Red. If there's a silver lining, it's just another chip on Strongs shoulder and will only add more fire and passion to an already passionate guy.

Prove the the bitter old rich guy wrong Charlie!!!

Are you being willfully obtuse, or do you really believe the intent of the statement was to compliment Strong's abilities at coaching at every level except as the head coach? Come on, man.

@Cayleb_Jones4: Geeezeee true character in Austin is being revealed due to Charlie Strong hiring at UT. Shouldn't see color, just different shades of grey
