Opening playoff games see nationally ranked teams go down

Trinity (Euless) entered Friday's Texas playoff matchup with South Grand Prairie undefeated and ranked No. 7 nationally in the Maxpreps 25 National Football Rankings.

By the final whistle, Trinity's season — along with its state and national title hopes — was over.

South Grand Prairie stunned Trinity, 24-21, in one of the biggest upsets in the Lone Star State this season.

A 32-yard field goal as time expired helped South Grand Prairie pull off the colossal upset.

Trinity was enjoying a dream ride that seemed destined to end playing in the state finals, with a shot to win its first state title since 2009.

Trinity opened its season with an upset of California power De La Salle (Concord), then the No. 1-ranked team nationally.

It won its next nine games, punctuated by victories over Southlake Carroll, Coppell and Richland heading into the playoffs.

South Grand Prairie advances to take on the winner of the game between Denton Ryan and Plano East.

Cedar Hill, ranked in the poll for most of the season, lost to Southlake Carroll to end their season in the first round for the first time in years. Carroll goes on to play Denton Guyer this week.

Thanks for the props on my upset call. SLC's brutal early schedule is now paying dividends. They're going to make a run, IMO. I think we're going to see a SLC vs Katy final.

I'll play along on the picks . . .

Longview vs Mansfield Summit – If Longview plays like Longview, Longview wins. Lobos hit some bumps late in the season so confidence in this pick is low.

John Tyler vs Mansfield Lake Ridge – John Tyler is jelling at the right time and have faced a lot of adversity during the regular season leading up to this.

Temple vs Stratford - Just a talent advantage pick

Denton Ryan vs South Grand Prairie – SGP Surged late, like they did last year. Ryan is not it's usual self. Should still be close but SGP is on a roll.

Pearland vs Dickinson – Dickinson is over rated. Pearland has played good competition and held its own.

Laredo United vs Weslaco – I picked this one only because Bryman is da man

Austin Westlake vs The Woodlands – The Woodlands is a tough team. They played Katy tough. Westlake has shown some vulnerability lately.

Manvel vs League City Clear Creek – Much respect for Clear Creek, good season topped with win over Dickinson. But Manvel is just so talented.

Lake Travis vs Spring Westfield – I see nothing to stop Lake Travis in this one.

Denton Guyer vs Southlake Carroll – An easier game for SLC than last week. Guyer hasn't had the season they expected to have.

Flower Mound Marcus vs Mansfield – Marcus is salty and getting better each week. Mansfield is another team getting better, late in the season. But I think Marcus has a defense that can keep Mansfield's O in check.

Cedar Park vs Kerville Tivy – If Tivy had a defense, this would be a close game. But they don't so it's a Cedar Park win by two touchdowns.

Argyle vs Pittsburg – Argyle is talented and disciplined. Pittsburg is talented. Argyle wins because of fewer mistakes and turnovers. Discipline.

Cameron Yoe vs Malakoff – Malakoff is not a bad team, but Yoe is here every year and is a much more talented team.

Mason vs Refugio – Mason is a scrappy team that is relentless. Thats the kind of team that gives Refugio problems. Mason by a TD.

Haha thanks SHA, I appreciate that! Fair warning though, Coach Tony has had problems with the spread offenses of Laredo United and Alexander. In the 11 years he has been at Weslaco, I believe he's 0-4 against Laredo teams in the playoffs. The closest has been a 28-26 loss to Alexander in 2010, but we've lost to United and Alexander once each since then (57-21 in 2012 and 40-28 last year). We've got a great team this year that has been very good on both sides of the ball, but I don't know enough about United other than historically to be confident about a pick. Still being a homer and picking the Panthers over the Longhorns, though, 35 - 31! (Yup, Laredo United are the Longhorns).

Pearland over Dickinson an "upset" pick?  My upset pick is Spring Westfield over Lake Travis FWIW.

Yea, good point. Dickinson spent most of the season ranked while Pearland did not. But Pearland ended the regular season ranked while Dickinson was knocked off by Clear Creek late. Probably not an upset, like you said.

Now, if your pick comes through, that truly would be an upset.

Prep football playoff preview: Camas vs. Skyline

Posted on November 19, 2015by Tim Martinez
CAMAS (11-0) vs. SKYLINE (10-1)

4A state quarterfinal game

When, where: 3 p.m. Saturday; Spartan Stadium, Skyline HS, Sammamish

Internet video: nfhsnetwork.com

Last week: Camas beat Skyview 29-22; Skyline beat Gig Harbor 17-15.

Last meeting: Skyline beat Camas 51-28 in the 4A state semifinals in 2012.

Players to watch: Skyline QB Blake Gregory has passed for 2,100 yards with 26 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions on the season. Camas QB Liam Fitzgerald has passed for 2,913 yards and 32 TDs.

Game notes: The winner will travel to play the winner of Lake Stevens/Graham-Kapowsin in the state semifinals at the Tacoma Dome. Skyline was the 4A KingCo champion at 8-0. All four KingCo teams won Week 10 playoffs. Skyline and Woodinville reached the state quarterfinals. Skyline’s lone loss came in its lone non-league game, 38-34 against unbeaten Graham-Kapowsin. Last week was the first time the Spartans were held to fewer than 31 points all season. When weather and Gig Harbor’s defense limited the passing game, the Spartans turned to the ground attack. RB Rashaad Boddie rushed for 185 yards and had TD runs of 56 and 79 yards. The Colorado State commit has rushed for 1,600 yards and 18 TDs this season. But he wasn’t the KingCo offensive MVP. QB Gregory was. Kicker Jack Crane has 14 field goals this season, including a long of 46 yards. Camas was the 4A Greater St. Helens League champion at 6-0. All three 4A GSHL teams won Week 10 playoffs. Camas was held to a season-low 29 points last week. The Papermakers had scored at least 35 points a game before last week.  Two of Camas’ TDs last week came on a kickoff return and interception return. Despite heavy pressure from the Skyview defense, Fitzgerald passed for 254 yards last week. RB Jordan Del Moral rushed for 115 last week to give him 1,426 for the season and 23 TDs. Jared Bentley leads Camas with 78 receptions, 1,153 yards and 13 TDs. The Camas defense gave up pass plays of 80 and 87 yards last week. They also intercepted four passes, two by Jack Colletto. Junior LB Michael Matthews was the 4A GSHL defensive player of the year.

The Prep Proletariat says: These teams are very similar. Both have a solid passing game, a strong ground attack and a stout defense. But last week’s struggle for the Papermakers to get past a Skyview team they handled so well a month earlier gives me some concern. SKYLINE 31, CAMAS 24

Score Czar says: Camas 31, Skyline 24

The weather in Sammamish, WA for Saturday afternoon is supposed to be 44 degrees for a high, and sunny.  (I'll believe that last part when I've seen it!)

I don't believe weather will be an issue.  I do think that Camas is going to have to key on the Sammamish RB.  He's a big boy that runs well.  Camas is not loaded with big defenders.  They're more of a speed team, so shutting down the running game will be key.  Once they've stopped the run, their Jr CB will have to make sure he covers well or has some safety help, because he got burned twice last week for long TD pass plays.  If I were the Sammamish OC, I'd be trying to get that same Camas CB in 1-on-1 coverage and exploit it early and often.

And if I'm the Camas OC, I roll everything to the right on the pass plays.  Last week, until the final drive, Camas QB rolled left and his throws were all over the place.

joeywa's pick: 35-31 Camas.

The second round rocks: 10 of the most exciting playoff games of the last 10 years

By Matt Wixon

Dallas Morning News

The second round of the UIL offers some delicious matchups this weekend, and that's nothing new. This is often a round where powerhouses meet, because district champs can now run into each other.

Here are 10 of the most exciting second-round games from the last 10 years:

2014 6A DIVISION I

Allen 25,  DeSoto 22: I had to include this one, because the teams will meet again late Friday night. Allen trailed 22-14 with nine minutes left, but quarterback Kyler Murray ended up running for 194 yards and three touchdowns, and and he set up Sawyer Williams' winning 25-yard field goal on the final play. (Full column on this game here.)

2013 5A DIVISION I

DeSoto 34, Coppell 30: This was one of the most entertaining games I've covered. DeSoto trailed by three with less than a minute left, but DeSoto made the most of its final chance. Quarterback Desmon White rolled to his left, and with a defender on his heels, lofted a pass into the back of the end zone. Kevin Thomas pulled it in and got his left foot inbounds for a 19-yard touchdown that completed DeSoto's win.

2011 5A DIVISION I

Euless Trinity 28, Allen 21: In a collision of undefeated powerhouses, the game in front of 30,000 fans at what was then called Cowboys Stadium (now AT&T Stadium) came down to one split-second collision. It was Allen quarterback Alec Morris vs. Trinity linebacker Chris Fonokalafi and defensive lineman Safari Bolden. Morris tried to get in the end zone on fourth-and-goal, but Fonokalafi and Bolden stopped him just short. A year later, Allen's championship streak began.

2009 5A DIVISION II

Southlake Carroll 35, Allen 34 (2 OT): Allen quarterback Matt Brown threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Chase Gambill on the final play of regulation to force overtime, butCarroll's defense made the clinching stop in front of 40,000 fans at Cowboys Stadium.Allen tried to win with a two-point conversion in the second overrtime, but Carrollsafety Justin Agnew stopped Brown on a quarterback keeper.

2009 5A DIVISION I
Skyline 41, DeSoto 36:
A couple of hours before the Allen-Carroll game, Skyline's Mike Davis was stellar at SMU's Ford Stadium. Davis caught four touchdown passes as a receiver, picked off two as a defensive back, and made the game-clinching play to help Skyline run out the clock. On a third-and-5 at the Skyline 27-yard line, Davis beat double coverage for an 11-yard reception.

2008 5A DIVISION I

Euless Trinity 42, Plano 35: Plano running back Rex Burkhead rushed for 142 yards, scored three touchdowns and intercepted a pass as a linebacker, but Trinity pulled off the win with a big pass at Texas Stadium. Quarterback Denarius McGhee, who had more than 300 yards passing in the game, connected with Tyree Tucker for a 26-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left.

2007 5A DIVISION II
Hebron 50, DeSoto 44 (4 OT)
: Hebron forced overtime with a 60-yard pass from Tanner Marsh to David Crawford and a two-point conversion with two minutes left at the Birdville Fine Arts/Athletic Complex. Absalom Jones' 4-yard run gave Hebron the lead in the fourth overtime, and linebacker Alex Norman clinched the win by batting down Cyrus Gray's fourth-down pass.

2006 5A DIVISION I

Southlake Carroll 22, Euless Trinity 21: One of the greatest games ever featured 46,339 fans and would've attracted more if not for a massive traffic jam around Texas Stadium. Trinity led 21-16 when it tried a fake punt and failed with 2:30 left. Carrolldrove 35 yards for the winning touchdown, capped by Riley Dodge's 2-yard run with 37 seconds left.

2006 5A DIVISION II
Garland 24, Longview 21:
Shortly after Garland's Malcolm Williams ran past the midfield star at Texas Stadium on a 96-yard kickoff return, he became an even bigger star. With the score tied late in the fourth quarter, Williams stripped Longview's Jazmon Moon of the ball and recovered the fumble to set up Mladen Bjelica's 42-yard game-winning field goal.

2005 4A DIVISION II
Wylie 41, Woodrow Wilson 38:
In an amazing comeback, Wylie rallied from a 31-3 halftime deficit to stun Woodrow Wilson at Kincaide Stadium. Sergio Kindle rushed for 323 yards and five touchdowns for Woodrow, but Wylie roared to life after halftime, and Zach Abbott connected with Max Boe for the winning 22-yard touchdown with 2:51 left.

Who knows anything about Mansfield Summit? Can my Lobos take them?

Makes me nervous because we throw the ball worse than Texas does, a lot worse.

Depends on which Lobos team shows up. Summit is pretty salty. Should be a close game.
