To liken this to a poker hand,

CFS flopped trips (3 of a kind).   Generally a strong hand but he's gambling on a solid hand to draw to an inside straight flush (ie. . .he has 4 cards but the 5th he needs is in the middle. . .vs an open ended straight which means the cards on either side,  4, 5, 6, 7 of spades meaning he needs 3 or 8. . . . .but CFS has 3, 4, 6, 7 and trying to draw the 5).

He's taken a huge though I'll wager calculated gamble and he thinks he can land the whale. . .. the #1 DT QB in the state.

Bird in the hand vs 2 in the bush.

And in this case, more like 4 in the bush as Kyler's commit to TEXAS would virtually assure players like Mack, Boyd etc follow.   Frankly wouldn't be shocked to see Weathersby (top OL) flip with him too.

CFS isn't settling but make no mistake, he has taken a path that he had to know would push Gentry elsewhere.  CFS is playing for titles and that's what he is selling these kids.   This is a bold move but poker and life favors the bold.

I'm on the complete opposite spectrum when it comes to the "gamble/risky" narrative when it comes to QB recruiting. This is how I see it.

1-Gentry was a developmental project, like most QBs coming into college. Matter of fact, I feel the same way about all the QBs on the board (Murray, Merrick, and Locksley). All QBs coming into college are a "developmental project" to a degree. People that think we were just going to plug in Gentry from year one haven't seen his film. The kid has a lot of upside, but he's certainly a project. The narrative that this is a "risk" seems to stem from the idea that we have to have a QB ready to play by next year. That simply isn't going to happen IMO unless we find a graduate transfer.

2-I've never seen this as a risk, because IMO Texas will land either Locksley or Murray. I would consider it somewhat of a risk if only Murray was still on the board. The benefits generated from landing Murray make this little to no risk at all, since Locksley is a perfectly fine fall back plan. I don't see much difference in Locskley or Gentry, they are both developmental projects. There's no telling how either turns out. I think Texas lands Locksley and that's why I've never viewed this as a risk.

Mack Brown would have stopped after Gentry committed, no more qbs would have been recruited.  We have seen the results of that over the past 5 seasons with just very poor qb play.

CFS is trying to add competitos to the team.  I hope it works well for us

This is not Charlie’s first rodeo…

I also agree that Charlie would not expose Texas… and himself… to unreasonable risk.

I do not think that the jersey tweet would have gone out from Murray without it having been discussed first with Charlie. The result was foreseeable.

I also think it is highly possible that Texas already has Locksley, or Murray as silent commits… and eventually may land both.

Remember… Charlie already has Heard with a red shirt year under his belt.

If it is true… as I believe… that Texas is now moving to more up-tempo, spread offense… then Heard is a great starting place… compared to last year.

Charlie figures… if we’re going to more up-tempo, with Norvell’s help… and with Heard already in training… then the risk of loosing Gentry… compared to the reward of gaining Murray, Locksley, or both… is worth going “all in.†

Remember… in poker… you play the player… not the hand.

But, it doesn’t hurt to also be holding the high hand…

Great analogy. Let's take it one step further - CS is representing that he flopped trips but what the rest of the table doesn't know is that he actually know exactly what Murray is going to do and CS actually flopped 4 of a kind and he's just slow playing his hand.

What is Weathersby's story since the de-commit from the Horns? Why did he de-commit and who has he visited since?

Charlie has a hell of Texas Hold'em Hand and is going to play it. So lets get it on and do not stop playing untile we have all the chips...

I don't know if CFS "pushed" Gentry anywhere.

We did everything in our power to keep him. Watson visited with him before his trip to Ann Arbor. CFS was scheduled Monday, but I guess that's canceled. Gentry's skill-set doesn't match up with our rumored change to an Ohio State spread offense.

If you were a QB with NFL aspirations, who do you want as a mentor? Harbaugh or Watson?

Pretty easy choice, IMO

One comment, lots of ways to run spread. . . . we run plenty of it already.

tOSU does not run an uptempo spread, rather they are very deliberate and finished ranked #25 in TOP. . .

That CFS might be slow playing a better hand than we realize. . . well that just good poker. . ..

And certainly helps milk the momentum for 2016 as well.

Have to chuckle,

Ketch opens his 10 weekend thoughts article using the same "all in" poker analogy .. .

Great minds?   Or imitation the sincerest form of flattery?  or  just happenstance?

Who knows though it does really matter.

True, but Gentry obviously sees his future as a prototype NFL passer.

FWIW, that doesn't appear to be the direction we're headed based on Norvell's addition and conjecture.

I hope you're right about CFS slow-playing our "silent commitments". Let the boys have their day in the spotlight.
