The Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners will meet for the 118th time on Saturday at the hallowed grounds of the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. While neither team is ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll in this matchup, the first time this has happened in the last 24 years, the stakes are still very high for both programs and their coaches.
For the Longhorns and Steve Sarkisian, the season goal of a conference championship appearance is still in sight. They will need to get past the Sooners to do so, which has proven to be a challenge for Texas. Oklahoma has won 10 of the last 13 meetings and the Sooners have been crowned Big 12 Champions 14 times in the last 22 years.
The Longhorns held a commanding lead in last year's game only to see freshman quarterback Caleb Williams lead the Sooners to a 55-48 come-from-behind win in the second half. No lead is safe in this game. The players know it, the coaches know it and the fans know it.
Texas must find a way to score points in the 4th quarter, something they have had trouble doing this season. It is trending favorable that the 'Horns will have starting quarterback Quinn Ewers under center for this game after missing the last month rehabbing an injured shoulder. Ewers shined in the Alabama game before being knocked out of the game, giving the Texas offense a spark it hasn't seen in several years.
The quarterback position remains uncertain for the Sooners. Starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel left last week's TCU game with a concussion and his status for Saturday is unknown. Should Gabriel remain on the sidelines, expect to see Pittsburgh transfer Davis Beville and/or General Booty at quarterback for the Sooners.
Both teams have solid rushing attacks, with the Longhorns' led by Bijan Robinson who has reached the century mark on the ground in each of his last three games. Oklahoma will utilize a trio of capable running backs in Marcus Major, Eric Gray and Jovantae Barnes.
Oklahoma owns a four game winning streak against Texas and neither Sarkisian nor Venables holds a win as head coach over the other program.
