*****GAME THREAD - TEXAS vs. KANSAS (11/23/2018)*****

Short week, played like shit, Sam’s played like his shoulder wasn’t all the way there. Get some rest and reset for next week.

The refs were clearly wrong on that os kick. Herman seems to like using the term resilient when it comes to doing post game interviews about his team and getting a victory. For me thats coach speak for winning the game despite all the screwups.

I'm not convinced Sam was 100% healthy. That was by far his worst game of the year. On top of that, his stat line was eerily similar to Shane's stat line back in the 2016 debacle.

Hopefully now he'll have a chance to rest up and come back strong in the CCG.

We’re headed in the right direction boys and girls. Lot of young guys out there playing today and looks like it going to be another great class coming in fUTure19. Times are about to get “really really” fun. Ok, Cool Hook’em

Defense played SOLID. Sam def wasn’t all there... this team CAN get a victory next week. Play up or down to competition and next week will be no different. And Gary Johnson will hopefully be back... Horns are doing something they haven’t done in 10 years.. props to Herman and company

On the post game interview, Sam stated his shoulder was fine but it was aggravated during the game.

As far as hiring Beaty, that may be closer to happening than not. Even the Texas players were heaping praise on him.

Another poorly officiated B12 game. There were more than an understandable amount bad/no calls, but the worst:

• No-call on the late hit by Texas early in the game

• Face mask no-call on the clothesline of Ingram in the open field

• Onside kick prematurely called for KU possession was atrocious.

Not a pretty offensive game for the Horns. Sam was definitely off his game and limited. The D looked good, with a couple exceptions.

In the final analysis, I wouldn't read too much negativity into this game, assuming Sam is healthy for the CCG.

Texas quotable: Tom Herman says Longhorns are 'overachieving' as they head to Big 12 title game

No. 14 Texas is back in the Big 12 title game for the first time since 2009 after defeating Kansas on Friday, 24-17, in the regular season finale.

Here were some notable things the Longhorns said following Friday's win:

Tom Herman

On the feelings from the win:

"I told the team, it's like golf -- they don't draw pictures on the scorecard. They don't draw pictures of wins and losses. We know we're an unfinished product. We know we've got a lot of work to do. But we're overachieving right now. And we've done just enough to earn the right to play for our conference's title game."

On if Texas has championship mettle:

"Of the two teams that we could play (for the Big 12 title), we were 16 seconds away and a two-point conversion away from beating, and we did beat the other one. I think our guys know that if we play our best, we think we can play with anybody in the country."

On putting in perspective Texas playing for the Big 12 title:

"It's hard for me to do that because we've still got a game to play. I don't want to diminish what these seniors have gone through and what they've given us and given their family, given their team, their program, their university, to get to this point. Just getting there isn't the goal. Our team has fought, scraped, clawed, trained. You wonder why we put them in such adverse conditions in the offseason, it's for fourth quarters like that one, where they have to respond to quite a bit of adversity -- and we did. Again, I don't want to diminish what that crew has accomplished by getting there, but I know that they would be angry if I told you the story was already written. The story is still unfinished."

On LB Jeffrey McCulloch's fourth-quarter interception that flipped the field:

"It was enormous -- enormous play in the game. Our quarterback hadn't thrown an interception -- I think it was a Big 12 record -- since Week 1. And to go out there and throw two, he'll tell you he didn't have his best stuff. But for our defense to have our back and Jeff to make an incredible play like that, get it down to where we could take some time off the clock and still get points -- I think that put us up 24-7, I believe -- that was a huge play in the game."

On the mood in the locker room afterward:

"It was a lot of dancing. I know that. These guys deserve every ounce of celebration for what they've accomplished in the regular season. We're always gonna celebrate wins around here. We're gonna celebrate them, we're gonna go to bed tonight knowing that we've got to wake up tomorrow and get back to work. Our guys will have tomorrow off, save for the training room. Sunday will be our normal Sunday, and it's back to work. But they were really, really excited."

Sam Ehlinger

On the difference on offense between the first and second half:

"I thought we did enough to win. I thought that we had some opportunities on offense that we just let go. We need to clean up for next week."

On how his throwing shoulder felt:

"It wasn't too bad. It got hit a little bit and aggravated it, but it wasn't anything that was limiting."

Charles Omenihu

On the feelings from the win:

"It felt great getting the W. It feels great going to a championship game. Me personally, I've never been to one coming from the way we've came these last four years, me being here. This was the ultimate goal of saying, 'Hey, I'm gonna come back to school and do something.'"

On Kansas playing Texas tough:

"I expected those boys to come out hard. They love Coach (David) Beaty. These guys, they play hard. They play everybody hard. They're gonna fight because it's their last game, so nothing was a surprise to me."

Blii Parcells said...." a win is ugly for only 1 day"

I did not even know that Gary Johnson was suspended for the game and did not play. I hope he can join us next week.

My thoughts:

– The O came out firing on all cylinders. Then, disappeared for a while.

– While Watson had a very good run there at the end, the running game needed to be more effective.

– Told ya'll we'd have a tough one in Lawrence.

– Worst football I've seen from Sam in a while. I hope he watches this film.

– Did not like the way we let our foot off the pedal there in the 4th. McCollough and his INT saved our butts.

– I'm liking the way we're using the TE in the passing game. Haven't seen that here in years.

– Gary Johnson didn't play and it showed.

– Beatty is a class act. Hate to see him get canned but it will probably help his career to get away from there.

Yea, a win is a win, blah, blah, blah. This game left a bad taste in my mouth. Didn't watch but listened and that was bad enough.

Buechele can play next two games and still red shirt. They are a bit more important. But we did have to get there almost didn’t.

Well, going 9-3 and playing in the Conference Championship Game should definitely get rid of that taste in your mouth.

If it didn't, then you really need to reassess you expectations.

All that is great and I'm happy about it, but there is something wrong with this team. I can't tell if it's the coaches or the players but the playing up or down to your competition will get you a losing season as often as not. Mark my words, if this doesn't get fixed we will return to a Mackovic like era.

Pay close attention to what Tom says. This team has overachieved this year. Tom is not as stupid as the posters on all the various Texas boards think he is. He knows that he will have a really good team next year and an even better team the year after next.

And Tom will coach circles around Mackovic when it's all said and done.
