*****GAME THREAD - TEXAS vs. EASTERN ILLINOIS*****

I'm glad the game turned around. I still don't have much faith in Smart, but I will start the season with guarded optimism. After the last 20 plus years of mediocrity with the Cowboys and the last decade of futility with the football program my fuse is short.

I feel your pain brother

Was at the game last night, and despite the slow start, this is an improved team. We'll see what happens against a stronger opponent, but the ball movement and offensive scheme in general looks way better than last year. @Bitterwhiteguy shared this stat in his write-up (https://www.barkingcarnival.com/2018/11/6/18070710/shooting-from-the-corner-texas-71-eastern-illinois-59-andrew-jones-is-playing-no-youre-crying):

Kerwin Roach II wasn’t on the floor and three Texas guards still tallied 20 assists on the night. Do you want to know how many games the team combined for 20+ assists last season? One, Northwestern State. Texas won that game 105-59, which means Texas got nearly as many assists in a 71 point effort as they did in a 105 point effort last year. I bring this up to point out how many more made baskets were assisted this game than any last year. It’s only one game so the small sample size is an issue, but it’s still nice to see even once.

All of the freshmen that played had solid debuts. Jaxson is stupid agile for his size and Ramey is a solid ball handler with some play making ability. Coleman's improvement from year 1 to 2 is clear. His shot has definitely improved, and he has truly assumed the floor general role. Finally, seeing that much press defense was a pleasant surprise. I'll put this in the wait and see column to see how much it is used throughout the season, especially when playing better competition. Overall, count me cautiously optimistic.

On an emotional note, it was great to see Andrew Jones out on the court again. He looked better than I thought he would, and the fact that this kid is out there is a win in itself. Here's to hoping he continues to improve and plays a key role in this team's success.
