Texas hosts Houston Christian

AUSTIN, Tx. – HCU baseball is set for a midweek test against one of the nation's top teams, traveling to face No. 2 Texas on Tuesday, April 8. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin.

The Huskies (12-18, 5-4 SLC) are coming off a conference series win over Nicholls, where they dropped the opener 5-4 before taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader, 6-4 and 4-2, in Thibodaux, Louisiana.

HCU's offense is led by Jack Walker, who paces the team with a .364 batting average and a .452 on-base percentage across all 30 games. Parker Edwards has provided consistent power, hitting .320 with a team-high six home runs and 26 RBIs. Kenneth Dutka and Katcher Halligan have also made strong contributions at the plate, each recording over 30 hits while maintaining averages near .300. Rhett Hendricks adds a punch with a .352 average and a .563 slugging percentage despite fewer appearances. As a team, the Huskies are batting .286 with 39 stolen bases and a .370 OBP.

Texas (25-5, 9-0 SEC) enters the contest riding momentum after a weekend sweep of No. 3 Georgia in SEC play, capped off by a 4-3 win in 10 innings on Sunday. The Longhorns are led by Max Belyeu (.358 AVG, 1.107 OPS, 22 RBIs) and Ethan Mendoza, who has totaled 40 hits and 34 runs with a .471 on-base percentage. Rylan Galvan has powered the lineup with a .775 slugging percentage, 10 home runs, and 26 RBIs. Texas owns a .291 team batting average with 52 home runs and 207 RBIs, while holding opponents to a .209 batting average.

The last meeting between the two programs took place in February 2024, when Texas came away with a 20-3 victory.

No. 2 Baseball’s Volantis earns SEC Freshman of the Week honors

Left-hander helped Longhorns secure first sweep over top-3 team since 2019

No. 2 Baseball’s Volantis earns SEC Freshman of the Week honors

AUSTIN, Texas — For the second time in the last three weeks, University of Texas standout Dylan Volantis was tabbed Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Volantis also garnered weekly conference distinction on March 24.

The 6-foot-6, 212-pound hurler appeared twice, earning a save and win against No. 3 Georgia to help the Longhorns secure their first sweep over a top-3 team in more than six years.

Across his two outings, Volantis notched nine strikeouts over 5 1/3 scoreless innings against college baseball's second-most prolific offense.

On Friday, he recorded the final four outs on only eight pitches to register his seventh save and lock down the 5-1 series-opening victory.

Two days later, Volantis retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced to set the stage for the Longhorns' 4-3 walk-off win.

The southpaw tallied a career-high eight strikeouts in four shutout innings, yielding just one hit.

In conference play, Volantis has not allowed a run across 13 1/3 frames. The freshman has posted a 1-0 mark with six saves, while issuing only two walks and 20 strikeouts over his first seven SEC appearances.

The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native is one of five Texas players to have collected SEC weekly accolades in 2025: sophomore Luke Harrison (Feb. 17), Adrian Rodriguez (Feb. 17), Will Gasparino (March 31) and Ruger Riojas (March 31).

Kade Bing with another Tuesday night start.

Winfield is starting in LF.

Bing has a 1 out walk, then single to RF. Runners on the corners. Strikeout for Bing. 2 outs. Flyout to CF.

So looking at their record. They are 20-10 and 12-3 in conference. Yours says 12-18 and 5-4 in conference. Kind of confused but that is what they have on screen right now on SEC+

Maybe this is the night Winfield starts to figure it out. We could really use his bat.

I was listening to part of the pre game talk with Schloss and they are 20-10 and leading the comference they are in. Plus our record is 26-4 overall and conference record is 11-1. Usually Texassports.com puts out a preview day of, today or Friday, for the game or series.

Top of the 2nd, both Weiner and Schloss seem to think that there is something wrong with Bing. A pitching change in the top of the 2nd to Jason Flores. Will have to wait till after the game to find out what they are seeing. 1 out in the top of the 2nd.

Agreed. Would love to see him get going at the plate. Also, would like to see Johan Williams get some at bats soon. The deeper the team is the better it is for a long post season run.

Bottom of the 2nd,

Bottom of the 2nd,

Top of the 6th. Rerick is showing some stuff. But with 2 outs he walks a guy then air mails one to backstop to allow the runner to move upto 2nd. Now walks another batter. Weiner is out to talk to Rerick. Groundout to 3rd.

Heading to the bottom of the 6th.

Agreed on Jonah Williams hope he gets an at bat he is due up 4th in the 6th. His talent level is high, he could be real difference maker if healthy.

Also Winfield looked little better tonight in his at bats, not seeing good pitching but he needs to see bat hitting the ball and get some confidence

Bottom of the 6th,

Leadoff double for Flores, Borba walks. Flores moves upto 3rd as Schuessler hits into a fielder choice. Williams is up. Williams gets hit by pitch to load the bases. Scott is a pitch hitter for Farmer. Scott called out on strikes. Winfield is now up. Winfield walks to bring in a run. Mendoza groundout.
