The True Freshman QB Conundrum

Coaching situation: Third-year coach Charlie Strong, hot seat

In some senses, this seems like the worst situation to turn to a true freshman. Young quarterbacks require patience, but patience has worn thin for Strong. He's 11-14 in two years at Texas, with losing seasons plagued by identity problems on offense and inconsistency at quarterback between Tyrone Swoopes and Jerrod Heard. Both Swoopes and Heard are back in a revamped system under new offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, and the chief goal is finding some sort of coherence on offense as soon as possible.

But even if turning to a true freshman is not ideal when the coach is under pressure to start winning more immediately, Texas might not have any other option. Neither Heard nor Swoopes has proved to be the answer behind center after plenty of chances, and Buechele's skill set is the best fit for Gilbert's scheme, as he's a better passer. Buechele impressed in the spring, making him appear to be the favorite for the job, although there are never any guarantees for someone so young.

Perhaps starting Buechele can buy some patience for Strong, because nobody expects a true freshman quarterback to play flawlessly. The key is showing flashes of potential while the system as a whole proves that Texas is finally on the right track on that side of the ball. Signing day and talented young players bring hope to fan bases, and Buechele represents a positive view of where Texas could be headed, while Swoopes and Heard are mostly associated with the struggles of the past two years. Just like with the offensive system, Texas is better off trying something new.

With an improved offensive line and what could be an excellent running game -- D'Onta Foreman and Chris Warren give the Longhorns a lot of potential at tailback -- it's going to be hard for Texas not to improve on offense. Still, starting a true freshman quarterback has the usual risk involved, on top of the fact that -- like Georgia -- the Longhorns open with a tough game. In this case, Texas hosts Notre Dame, who it lost to 38-3 in South Bend a year ago, and after hosting UTEP, its next three are tricky games away from home: at California, at Oklahoma State and vs. Oklahoma in Dallas. There's no easy breaking-in period here, but even if Buechele doesn't get the nod in Week 1, he's not going to sit on the bench long, nor should he.
