NEWBURY PARK — Moorpark put up 487 yards of total offense in defeating Newbury Park 41-28 in a matchup of Camino League rivals Friday night
With the victory over Newbury Park, Moorpark will host league rival Calabasas for the Camino league title next Friday.
“We are ready for the challenge. We have been waiting for this matchup all year” said junior running back Alex Powell.
The loss was even more painful for Newbury Park with quarterback Cameron Rising needing to be helped off the field with 5:19 left after the Texas commit suffered an apparent knee injury while diving for a touchdown.
Rising’s status after the game was unknown but after a shoulder injury ended his season last year, there was cause for concern among the Newbury Park coaching staff.
Moorpark sophomore Blake Sturgill had four first half touchdowns on passes of 8,17, and 17 yards while also running another from 1 yard out. He finished with 228 yards and five total touchdowns while completing 13 of 18 passes.
“Our coaches put together an outstanding game plan,” Sturgill said, “Our offensive line, running backs, and wide receivers all executed. It helps us going into next week.”
Moorpark took a commanding 27-14 halftime lead. Newbury Park marched the second half kickoff 70 yards on just seven plays with Rising hitting Terrell Vaughn on a 6-yard touchdown to close the gap to 27-21.
Texas commit Casey Thompson had a career night Friday night but fell short in a shootout.

Elk City coach Todd Wilson has seen a fair amount of football, but none like Friday night.
Elk City and Newcastle battled it out offensively. Both quarterbacks accounted for nine touchdowns. Yet it still somehow came down to a defensive stop in Elk City's 84-70 victory.
Elk City quarterback Chipper Skelton intercepted Newcastle's Casey Thompson, a Texas commitment, inside the 30 and raced to the end zone with 7 seconds left to seal the victory.
“Never (seen) anything like that,” Wilson said. “Neither one of us had a lot of success stopping each other. It was crazy.”
Elk City had 784 total yards of offense.
Skelton was dynamic. He completed 21 of 29 passes for 443 yards and six TDs. He also rushed for two more. Running back Diquan Bradford also scored four times, three on the ground as he rushed for 254 yards. He also had 100 receiving yards.
This all overshadowed a career night for Thompson. He completed 35 of 67 passes for 565 yards and nine touchdowns. But he threw two costly interceptions.
“Their offense is unbelievable,” Wilson said.
Elk City (6-3) has clinched a playoff spot heading into this week's game with Heritage Hall, even after losing last week on a missed extra point to Cache.
Newcastle (2-7) needs to beat Cache on Friday to have any hope of the postseason.
