What's you're favorite pizza place in Austin??

I only make it down to Austin about once a year, but the one place I make sure I eat at is Frank and Angie's Pizzeria. Love that place.

Brick Oven is good, Mangia is good too. Conan's on the drag was the best. Of course Gumby's and Gattis were the place us low rent college students ate when we were there.

My son and I were gonna try Brick Oven when we were in Austin last year. We spent the night after the game and went to Frank and Angies but they are closed on Sundays. Brick Oven was too. I think we ended up at Austin Pizza or something like that.

Austin has changed in the restauarant -arena (and in a lot of ways since I lived there in the mid 90's). One thing is 4 sho - it is still ALL LONGHORN but the food has gotten healthier and the real estate prices have skyrocketed. The Californians are 2 blame! HOOK'EM.

Milto's Guadalupe @ 29th.  Rounder's on West 6th.

I used to eat at Milto's back in the late seventies and early eighties when I was in gradual school.  That brings back memories.  I also ate a lot at the Rome Inn at 29th and Rio Grande, when I was an undergraduate in the late sixties and early seventies. It was on my way home from UT. There was an Italian restaurant down on Sixth Street, not far from Hoffbrau, it was the fine Italian dining experience in an old Austin building in the sixties and seventies ... somebody help me out here, I tried a google but could not turn it up.  And, who could forget the Stallion on North Lamar.  Great place to be at three in the morning on a Saturday night.  You could be munching burgers and fries, with a booth of frat guys on one side of you, a booth of cowboys from outside of Paint Rock on another side of you, and a booth of bikers over yonder sitting next to a booth of transvestites.  Of course, that late at night, everybody got along with everybody else.  And, of course, they had to tear that place down!  What a waste!  ;)

Post Script:  I think that the Italian restaurant was Speranza's.  Believe it or not I pursued a google search and finally found it on an old Shaggy thread!  I am not absolutely sure, but I think that it was in the bottom floor of the building that now is occupied by Walton's Fancy and Staple, which is owned by Sandra Bullock.  I remember that it had high pressed tin ceilings,  The waiters, who were all Mexican American older gentlemen, all had mustaches and wore long white aprons so that they would look like Italian waiters.  I remember that I had my first ever fancy Italian meal of broiled whole flounder and pasta.  I must say that I was impressed, but I am not so sure that I impressed my date!  ;)

Nope!  That was not it.  That did not sound right.  Speranza's was a little trattoria at 318 Colorado.  Now, I remember Speranza's.  It had only eight tables and was better than any Italian restaurant in Austin today.  When I was in gradual school, my wife and I would meet on Friday nights with friends there.  The evening would pass through several courses and bread with a crust and a cappucinno for desert ... later we would take a walk on Sixth Street and Congress before going home.  This was before Sixth Street became the college student destination that is is today.   It felt just like street life in Italy, or Barcelona.  I am going to seek out and find the name of that Italian restaurant on Sixth Street ... it is a part of Austin culinary history, by gum!  ;)

Since I moved to the DFW 6 years ago I have been dying for a chicago style pizza like Mangia makes. If you want Chi-town pie, you HAVE to go to Mangia!!

Conan's on Stassney in Austin.  Their pizza is a clone of the original Pizzeria Uno in Chicago.
