We fielded a phone call this evening we thought was worth sharing from a source regarding the recruitment of Gladewater High School defensive end Daylon Mack.  Mack decommitted from Texas A&M on December 19th, the same day 5-star LB Malik Jefferson announced his commitment to Texas and there was hope for the potential 5-star to play along side Jefferson on Charlie Strong's defense at Texas.

Mack named TCU his leader yesterday, via twitter, and we can confirm tonight that Mack is VERY impressed with what the Horned Frogs accomplished this season and is more than just "interested" in playing under Coach Patterson in Fort Worth.   In fact, the source we spoke with, who is very close to the situation, told us that Mack's mind is already made up and TCU will be the beneficiary of the 5-star, Top-25 national player.

He is still scheduled to take an OV to Austin later this month but look for the Horned Frogs to land a big one.

Wasn't his mind made up when he was an aggy commit?

If he visits, he'll be a Horn, IMO.

He's liked TCU for awhile (and of course still does). But their class isn't exactly exciting right now.

That is alarming but he has changed his position so many times that I feel we still have a chance as soon as he hangs out with Malik for a weekend. As soon as he decomitted from aggy, the dam broke and now his emotions are all over the place. He way genuinely feel this way now about tcu but that is now not NSD.

Hard to disagree or argue that what Patterson and TCU are doing appeals to a defensive player like Mack. I'm not going to say that ship has sailed until he cancels all other visits and commits. I think there is something to be said about getting him on campus and letting him talk with CS. If Mack wants to play on a big stage with guys he has friendships with while developing into a 1st round pick and becoming a better man....all while getting a great education. Texas has a lot to offer.

It is obvious Mack enjoys the recruiting process. He likes to throw a comment or rumor out there and then set back and watch the reactions.

Wasn't it Charles O on Twitter that asked him why he was messing with these people or something like that.

It's so easy.

If I'm Charlie, I simply point directly at TCU and say "guess who got left out of the playoff and why?" Even if you and all your teammates are one play away from perfection, you're still left out at TCU.

Then show him how many times it's happened.

Cowherd said today that the media and ESPN want schools like Texas, USC, ND, and Ohio St on the big stage.

Lot more eyes on the "sets" for these teams.

TCU will start next season ranked extremely high.  From TCU's perspective, if there's a positive to getting left out of the CFB Playoffs and then throttling the competition in the bowl game, it's they will be a top-5 preseason team next season.

Personally, I don't like negative recruiting tactics like that.

I don't think that's Coach Strong's style, either. He's much better off selling UT's virtues rather than discuss TCU's inadequacies, no matter how valid. It's not like he doesn't have a proven track record developing NFL-ready defensive players.

I believe we're still in the mix for Mack unless he cancels his visit to ATX. We've just gotta get him on campus. Maybe Malcom Brown can be his host?

I agree. If you want to play college football on one of the top stages if not the top, you come to Texas. You throw in the town, the tradition, and the history...is there still a question? Not for me there isn't.

1. I agree that he appears to enjoy the celebrity of these moments.

2. Understand that this was not Mack on Twitter, or Mack to a reporter. This is people close to him talking about his recruitment. There's a difference.

#2 is not to say that he's 100% locked into TCU, but this news is different from his typical schtick.

Mack recently started following some good looking TCU girls.

Time to pull out all the stops Strong,  bring in Natalie Portman or Beyonce.

wow. really? if i'm TCU i'd say 'guess who we made to look like the freshman B-team on T-giving?'

we have things to sell at UT. a lot of them. talking noise about a team that jail-sexed us and is gonna finish 2 or 3 in the country would be waaaaay down my list.

Its not negative recruiting if you say," Do you want to win a National championship? I will tell you right now son, Texas and schools with the brand name like Texas will not get left out of the National Championship play offs." You haven't been negative at all. You haven't even mentioned a school name...BUT YOU HAVE GOTTEN YOUR MESSAGE ACROSS !!! Charlie doesn't have to bad mouth anyone.

1. It's true. TCU gets left at the altar time and again. They won a football game. That's really great. What did it get them?

Guess what? That never happens to Texas. And that's the point.

2. You don't sit there and ignore your competition in the recruiting world.

It's called a sales pitch. And it happens every single day.

When your wife says you're handsome, do you tell her to stop talking noise? Or do you believe she's telling the truth? Or is there a difference in your world?

The sun will come up tomorrow. Fact. But it's also noise.

Well, my wife's not talking noise when she says I'm handsome.

Didn't we get left at the altar in 08? Nothing is a given. We all THINK a 1-loss UT makes the playoff, but at whose expense?

I'm not Charlie, but my strategy would focus on Texas, not the fact that tcu was first alternate for the playoff. That sounds pretty good to me right now.

They're going to finish in the top-5 and be preseason top-5 next year. Pointing THAT out as shortcomings when we're where we are struck me as an odd sales pitch.
