Everything Texas Basketball... Nugget included

I have seen them play three games and I like the hustle and enthusiasm. Need better outside shooting though. Why doesn't Croaker get more minutes?

Getting to the "Dance" is one thing, winning is another. Barnes has been exposed recently and against less talented teams.

Any chance we look at Sean Miller?
Why would Miller leave Arizona?

I said years ago we should have scooped up Miller before someone else does. But no, we "stuck it out" with Barnes. (sad nana)

What AAU pre madonnas are you talking about? Surely not Julian Lewis and Sheldon McClellan?
corey joseph, jordan hamilton, tristan thompson were ranked number 3/4 of the way through the season until RB melted down about how they were playing is one example.

jcovan brown and avery bradley were other examples

Barnes didn't adjust to the realities of coaching those kids and that made a less-than-ideal situation worse.

The two kids who left last year were more of the same; addition by subtraction.

Barnes is tough because he has some real abilities. He can recruit when sufficiently motivated. We're somewhat willing to play the game so it's not really a case of getting outbid (except for Smart and in hindsight I'd have paid it).

J'Covan was a tough case and I'm not sure what Barnes could have done differently. In fact I think he cut J'Covan more slack than any of his other kids.

The development of Ibeh and Ridley looks real enough to me that it's something he can really lean on. But, I've seen some of this before, and as these kids mature will Barnes grow with them or will he demand some style and approach that all but coaches their instincts and natural basketball IQ out of them? That's my issue with him - his kids often not only don't improve but actually decline in production as they mature into upperclassmen. He's had enough time that at any school that was demanding accountability he'd be gone but he might just get a chance to get a second life.

The fact that Patterson comes from such a hoops background probably doesn't bode well for Barnes, but will Patterson theoretically want to replace both Mack and Barnes in the same year? That could be a tough task to fill.

Patterson could really cement himself early if Texas hires Saban (or another big name) and replaces Barnes with someone like Shaka Smart. You would be instantly elevating things huge heights quickly.

someone has to give re the B-ball program. This years team being fun to watch or not Barnes has had MORE THAN enough time and the program is just stale. Going into this year interest was prob at an all time low...at least since Barnes has been here

Miller won't happen neither will Josh Pastner. Those 2 names you can cross out. Unless some BMD like one of them and pushes for it.

He also has recruited kids that didnt buy into his system. He finally has a group that is buying into what Rick is coaching. Mostly cause Rick is listening to the players now. He's letting them have a input.

That is something he should have done with Jham and Myck. But he didn't. I'm thinking he is finally realizing you can be a hard ass but you also have to have a soft side

Any question related to this basketball team, the coaching search, recruiting questions.... This is where to ask or discuss!
Recruiting updated-

Was working on this for the crossfire, but just got the info I needed right now.

2014 F/C Myles Turner was recently spotted wearing a lot of burnt orange at and around school. If you know Turner he is a very reserve kid, so to see this kid wearing Texas gear is a big step for Texas.

I was told last night and got 2nd confirmation from the AAU side that Texas is now neck and neck with Kansas. With Texas considered to be the slight favorite, the talk lately has been on how Texas bigs have been playing. Some people say sometime I'm to optimistic on stuff. But hearing this from a very pro Kansas guy in the Dallas area has made me believe. Texas right now is 1, at least behind the scenes. Despite what is said in interviews, about no leaders.

I can't overstate how big a recruit Turner is. The kid is legit and a sure fire All Conference player as a freshman. If Texas continues to improve and let's say win 18 games and Barnes lands Turner. I would find it hard to believe Rick would be gone this year. But it could happen I guess. However if Texas wins 15 games or so and starts to lose the edge they are playing with now, it's no doubt Ricks last year.

I have always been very critical of Barnes. But I will say what he is doing this year is a breath of fresh air.

Let's try and get this thread active. I'm a open book.
Fill me in on this Turner person...

We need to change the atmosphere at the basketball games. The students need to have the first 6 to 10 rows around the arena. The gray hairs (and I am one) need to just shut up or get with the program. Basketball is a very exciting and fast paced game. The team (look at Duke or Kansas and many others.) feeds off the excitement and enthusiasm of the crowd. The students need to be floor level...and 6 to 10 rows upward!!!! This needs to be corrected yesterday!!!

Shaun,

Why didn't Barnes offer Marcus Smart and Phil Forte out of Flower Mound Marcus?

Not offering Forte at the expense of Smart was a huge blooper then, and is a bigger blooper now.

What gives?

he flat out didnt think forte was worth the scholly... bad move.

And Texas always needs shooters. Also, Smart was good enough to offer Forte even if he wasn't "that good."

But, you are right, he did come across as thinking Forte wasn't worth the package deal.

Exactly!!! Barnes refuses to recruit shooters and then we wonder why Texas can never shoot fts. The last shooter Barnes signed was Abrams. The fact that Forte was by far the best shooter in the state should've been AT LEAST worth serious consideration for a scholly let alone an offer that would've brought Smart.

Regardless of where they stand with Turner, Texas is better off just moving on from Barnes. Turner isn't going to take this group to the next level and he's not exactly a guy that will make Texas "cool" again. If we were talking about Smart or Randle, then maybe I'd give Barnes time as those guys had followings but Turner just isn't that guy.

Hell, I'd take Forte without Smart. The guy can play ball. I watched him at the State Tourney and noticed he did not back down from anyone and played with a lot of poise then. He would get a lot of minutes on this team.

FYI for the board. Myles Turner plays on ESPNU versus Houston Homeschool Christian tonight at 8 PM CST. Good chance see what type of game Myles has.

Barnes just didn't feel like Forte was a natural PG, which he isn't. He's a 5'10 SG. Also he felt like from what I heard Smart was a one and done. Didn't want to have to keep forte for 3 years after Smart left.

I actually thought it was a good move by Barnes at the time. But that was before he missed on some other kids he was going after in that class. When he missed on them he should have offered Forte. Forte would have committed on the spot he was a big Texas kid.

You can correct me if I'm wrong, but I always got the "shady" feeling when thinking of Pastner.
