DeLoss Dodds grew Longhorns into athletic juggernaut

For most of his 30 years, DeLoss was one helluva AD for UT.

Did he make mistakes? Absolutely, but overall he's a BIG reason why Texas athletics is what it is today.

I agree.  There were many years (right in my wheel house) that I thought he was an insurmountable problem:

Fired Abe Lemons (many of you may not remember this) - Hired Bob Wetlich (good man, didn't work out)

Fired Fred Akers - Hired David McWilliams (good man, didn't work out)

Fired David McWilliams - Hired John Macovick (bad fit at Texas)

Toward the end of the Macovick era he wasn't really popular around most UT fans.  Overall, you might say he was "great" for Texas Athletics.

Hired Tom Penders and Rick Barnes

Hired Mack Brown

Hired Augie Garrido

The good far outweighed the bad. Although, I agree the mistakes listed above were head-scratchers. Mackovic, in particular. McWilliams was a legacy pick.

Agreed.

Unless you are in my zip code or older, you don't remember this; but I believe it took DeLoss years (a decade or so) to overcome not being able to get along with Abe Lemmons and ultimately firing him.  Abe was beloved to Texas fans like... perhaps nobody I have seen.  His TV coaching show was like watching a half hour comedy set. His rivalry with Arkansas' Eddie Sutton was epic (to say the least)!  Maybe there were legitimate reasons, but the perception was that DeLoss was the "bad guy" in that family feud.

Abe was fired after a season (going from memory) which he started 15-0; hit #3 in the national rankings and then lost sure NBA lottery pick Mike Wacker to a knee injury, only to finish the season at around .500.

Here is to DD. He was instrumental in empowering TCU & West Virginia and he tied Texas to the Big XII through the granting of rights deal.

Great deals from where I stand.

And from where we stand, too, despite what ESPN and Clay Travis may write. Nobody would be bitching about our conference affiliation if we were winning championships in the sports that matter. UT is where it needs to be unless there's a massive, geographic realignment planned.

Big 12 forever!  ;)

I am shocked JB. I posted that in part because I was kind of in the mood for you to figuratively kick me in the nuts.

Then you go and post the above. I am going to have to rethink the whole Who is this JB guy thought that comes to mind from time to time. I think I just realized that I am an asshole. 😜

The first step is acceptance

The second step is a resolution to change or to decide not to give a shit. I chose the latter.

I had a couple of informal conversations with DD. This was several years ago at tailgates. I was not and never will be a BMD. He came across to me as a true gentleman and was very friendly.

I've always liked him. He made some mistakes but I would take him back if he were 20 years younger.

Well, if Embrey can do I can do it.

Hello, my name is North Texas Golfer, and I too am an asshole.

It's just comforting to know that the Official Assholes Club has more than two members
I think those who know me wouldn't nominate me for the OAC, but I have, on occasion, been known to be uncouth. 😉
