What those clips don't show is the trouble he had processing information before the snap. In the 5 games he played, he had several delay of game penalties.

Between reading the signals coming from the sideline, commanding the huddle and getting the play and formation right, get everyone lined up and read the defense he simply ran out of time. I think most times the pre-snap read was skipped. This is why he looked hesitant. He was reading on the run more often that not. When you have to think instead of react, you'll look slow and hesitant.

The last couple of games it looked like the game was starting to slow down for him. I believe he can be a D-1 QB but he needs a RS year. If that means he gets beat out by Heard, c'est le vie. Heard would've beat him anyway. He might be a quality back-up for Heard.

I agree we need Wittek for depth and so we can RS both Swoopes and Heard. I like Swoopes but he needs more time to develop.

Driftwood, I'd ask again, how would our opinions of VY and Colt been formed watching them struggle with the pace of the game as true FR. There's a reason damn few QBs don't redshirt. They're just not ready.

I guess that was my point. He wasn't ready. But, as I said, I think he can be a D1 QB he just needs time. I'm pulling for the kid.

I can't fault the coaches for burning his RS. It couldn't be helped. He looked good spring and summer til he got hurt. The time he missed at the beginning of the season, set him back. When Ash went out, he still wasn't 100% but probably could have played against ISU, but that game was too close. In hindsight, the coaches could have burned his shirt against ou but when Grissom cut it to a 2 score game with 10 min. to go, they stuck with Case.

I see no fault with burning the shirt.  He was needed.

Yes, e-cheese, this is exactly what I have been talking about.  He is being condemned because of his senior year in HS.  If ANYONE had done just a little research, they would have discovered he DID dominate his junior year.  He was injured most of his senior year with a hammy.  Besides, if we are going to judge all of UT's football heroes by their HS playing time, we are going to have a few less heroes - right?

The only TRUE evidence we have for him is the very college little playing time he had - including the spring game.  If one would rather discard that remarkable evidence and would prefer to languish on his HS days, then they are simply parroting others that know even less than they do.

But, you are right, their minds will not be changed and the whole debate has now come down to egos.  Here's hoping Strong is the coach we think he is and gives Swoopes his due - instead of trying to fit him into a round hole.

If we look at just this evidence (and sorry. . .wasn't his team knocked out of the 1st round of the playoffs as a junior?   Hardly dominating). . . I saw a VERY raw QB who just isn't ready .. . 

Yes, no question he should have shirted. . . . .and yes, no question he wasn't ready. . . what true freshman is?   Is he a better QB than John Chiles?   Probably but think about how low that bar is set.

Look no further than David Ash's freshman year where he was leading the team to wins.. . Swoopes was not close to Ash's true freshman year. . . .he has zero chance (IMHO of course) of winning the job this year unless we are returning to an option based attack.   I'm not hating on the kid. . .I just don't think he's the answer and sadly the victim of the recruiting hype machine.

As I said in my original post. . .it's early and I might be 100% wrong. . . .but I've said for close to 2 years. . . I think Heard passes Swoopes fairly easily on the depth chart (though PLEASE let Heard shirt this year) .. . . .and if I am wrong . . I'll be happy to say it. . .
