Dancing With Bears

i was wondering....

i got stereotypical  white-guy dancing moves which means i embarrass myself every time. and sadly, that will likely happen tonight.
Work that cracker shuffle tonight, STP!

all fair and valid points. my frustrations are 1) you're supposed to be playing your best football at the end of the year and we seem to have regressed and 2) we looked like the JV against the varsity against a mediocre team. we weren't remotely competitive.

but yes...onward and upward.

Agree, but who's guilty here STP. You and I? Or the offense?

Java, sit down, I'm going to rant. Forgive me in advance. :)

I don't lay this at Watson's feet, although I lay some things there (more on that later). I lay this at a QB who isn't a QB (but is all we had). When a SR QB goes 1-9 in class AA ball, he's not what you think he is. I'm sorry but I don't even think he makes a good TE with those clumsy feet of his. Without going into a bash fest, he just shouldn't have been there.

But folks like myself and STP expected things to get better, not worse. And being abuse by TCU and then Arkie at the end of the season sure makes it look like we got worse.

I do feel better today after seeing TCU dismantle and dismember Ole Miss (though they were without their starting WRs). TCU still showed themselves to be overly superior. Which brings me back to Arkansas. I hated this match up from the get go. Our weaknesses were their strengths and our strengths (DL) was neutralized by one of their strengths (OL). As Java pointed out, 41 mins is a long time to ask your DL to win that battle.

What I do lay at Charlie's feet are the words of some of our real football players, noting that some in our clubhouse don't deserve to wear the uniform. That tells me the problems are not totally solved, as some have thought (including myself).

So I'm not sure we saw a decline in our performance as much as we ran into two buzz saw teams that we matched up very poorly with.

I can say the following with some confidence as it comes from my friend JS - Wick is pissed that Heard did not get ANY reps with the 1st team offense during the bowl practices. Watson instead had the walk-on takes those snaps and relegated Heard to running the scout team, again. Wick's point is that the value of these extra practices is getting reps for a kid like Heard who will play next year - with the first team. This goes farther than Wickline, however. There are many BMDs who know and saw the same thing happen for those two weeks and are ticked. It is my understanding that Strong is seeing the light on that.

Perhaps the dismissals of the two assistants is a shot across the bow to Watson (indirectly)?

some good points here. i know watson will be the internet whipping boy for many, but dear gawd...what did he have to work with? i think bill walsh would've looked mediocre with this bunch.

Nice rant and I can say that is sums up my feelings pretty well.  I do think we all underestimated the job to be done in adjusting the attitude in the locker room.  I think it takes a full year of recruiting and leaving to clean up some things...let's hope it's close to being remedied.

While it is easy to pile on Watson and I have been one to say next year will be the real determining factor on the guy and what his philosophy and goals are.

If what you have reported is true about not giving Heard reps and keeping him on the scout team than that is firmly on Watson and is ridiculous.  Why on earth would you do that?  Wick should be pissed at Watson, and by default Charlie if he allowed that

From what you hear has Charlie been that hands off with the offense that Watson can do these things over Wick?  Does Charlie have input into the offense or is he allowing Watson full reign?  If so I hope your BMD friends can put a sense of urgency into Charlie.  I don't understand the shot across Watson's bow comment. Is Charlie deferring the offense responsibility or will Watson just not listen and is going somewhat rogue?

Thanks for the scoop

It's my understanding that certain areas cannot be overruled by the other. For instance, Watson can't tell Wick who to play at RT. Likewise, Wick can't tell Watson what to do at QB. They're hands off on those areas. But finally, Wick saw enough to speak out about it.

Charlie has a great deal of trust in Watson. Yet, Charlie is not going to let the ship sink over that trust. So I don't know where this goes but it wouldn't surprise me to see changes made to responsibilities, play calling, overlapping, etc. during the off season.

Thanks, makes sense.  This is some of the self reflection and changes I am looking for from this staff after year 1.  I had hoped they would re-evaluate a few things and make the staff better as well as the players...as the clock starts now.

Good information and thanks again SHL

Good for Wick and good for Charlie. I can tell you that I saw someone take Heard a green 'blouse' (don't know what you call it) and a headset as the game started. Whenever there was a timeout, he was brought into the huddle (close to the bench).

With the information you just provided, I am not going to take what I saw for granted. Holtz should have been scout team. What was wrong with Watson?

Hook 'em!
