Crossfire with McPhaul - Thanksgiving 2013 Edition

I guess I don't understand how you go from he's 100% our next coach to "Maybe Nick Saban doesn’t come to Texas". I mean, it at least seems like you should have been more at 70%, which would indicate strong confidence. As it is, it almost seems like you're just playing us. And truly, I'm not being disrespectful to you. I'm calling it like I see it. How could you go from 100% to "Maybe Nick Saban doesn't come to Texas" in one week? It can't be because of the article because you discredit it.

I'm pretty sure your answer is going to be "the situation is fluid". Saban isn't even my #1 so it's not like you're ruffling my feathers. I just feel like the whole thing is a tease.

the point you mentioned about bryant jr's concern about preserving his fathers legacy vs nick is interesting

thanks for the insight and Happy Thanksgiving

If the rumors are true of who Mack prefers as our next HC, he should definitely stay out of the loop

Who does Mack prefer?
Anyone who'll come in and keep the program on a slow, steady climb. Anyone who can come in and turn this thing around in 1-2 years would expose Mack and his coaching staff.

Now on to yet another topic that doesn’t seem to be getting much attention and that pertains to Saban and his relationship with Paul Bryant, Jr. Well, I spoke to one of my contacts recently regarding Saban to Texas and he responded, “McPhaul, another significant reason that Saban has for leaving Alabama is Paul Bryant Jr. (son of Bear Bryant and President of the Alabama Board of Trustees). He went on to say, “There is significant tension between Saban and Bryant, and Bryant goes out of his way to make life difficult for Saban behind the scenes. The reason for this is that Bryant is very concerned about preserving his father's legacy at all costs. He does not want Saban to win more national championships at Alabama than his father. I have heard that this is a bigger player behind the scenes for Saban's desire to move on that most have led on- just some more food for thought.â€
This makes as much, if not more, sense as a reason for Saban leaving than almost any other I've heard. I have friends and family who are Bama grads...Bear Bryant isn't just a coach to Alabama fans, he's a deity and will be regardless of Saban's success. BUT...being a Bryant in Alabama's as close to a free ride as it gets and it's no stretch to assume that Jr's professional/financial success has direct ties to his lineage and that he'd view any threat to Bear's record as a threat to his ability to thrive in the shadow of his father's legacy. The idea that he'd boast about doing everything in his power to keep Saban while trying to sabotage his success makes complete sense.

McPhaul, I am impressed with your blog and you in particular. Your membership is respectful and posts intelligent opinions. I like that, because we all know nothing is stamped in concrete until it has been S, S & D, and anything before that is opinion and speculation, albeit; informed speculation.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but Nick Saban does not strike me as a man that will be intimidated or pressured - even by a legands son. In fact, it would seems to be motivation for him staying at Bama - just to beat Bryants record and to shut his son up.
