CROSSFIRE with McPhaul - NEW YEAR’S DAY EDITION

That's a damn fine report. You guys are warming me up to John Harbaugh. Exciting week ahead.
This report is nonsense. None of those guys are going to be the next UT coach..

First Darrell Happy New Year to you and yours. Appreciate you sharing your insights and knowledge. Like many I have been on board with Saban from day one. I love the Texas ties of Briles which means from a recruiting perspective you might not do better. I wish I knew why I can't get on board with Fisher. What's the draw. BCS this year ok, just don't think he has the resume we're looking for. I also think Bobby has groomed him for FSC and he's a good fit for their program. I really like the Harbaugh choice and would be a big splash IMO. I would venture to guess that these boys would welcome plaing for an NFL winning coach with a door to the NFL.

Would love to see a press conference on the 6th right before Auburn kick off announcing Saban. If this falls through I say we get Harbaugh and get to work!!!

Hook Em and again thank you for your work!

my problem with harbough is what if the michigan coach has another bad year and they fire him and they go for john harbough because i have heard that john really would choose michigan over tx. thats means we could only have him for one year and have to start this process all over again.

Worry about today's problem today and tomorrow's problems tomorrow.

FWIW - watch the Wisconsin/S. Carolina game, going on right now. Gary Anderson (a potential HC for UT) and Jedoveon Clowney (my choice for the first pick in the draft) are worth watching in this game.
No offense but Gary Anderson is only a candidate on the message boards. He hasn't been associated as a candidates from anyone credible.

That is one of my must watch games today. I really like Gary Anderson, great coach and great guy. Oh and Clowney, the guy is a freak of nature

The extensions all of these coaches are signing are as useless as the paper they're written on. Especially with no buyout clause in them. Even the ones with buyouts are pretty much useless. Coaches are mercenaries now days when it comes to big time college football.
I have no dog in the hunt as far as the legal validity of an extension. I do know this - those coaches that have signed them did not have to. They signed them BEFORE their season was over, when they could have very well waited until afterwards. That spells desire to me, regardless of how valid the paper is.

All the reasons given for why they signed are Bogus, IMO. These guys are star coaches and they could sign whenever they wanted. If the reasons given were "distraction" or "forced" do you really believe it? As far as Saban, for instance, could there have been a media storm that could have distracted him? Or his players, considering how they are insulated? Could any school "force" Saban, Briles or Fisher to sign or else?

I say nay, nay. They signed because they damned well wanted to stay.

You didn't ask him why all the assistants have been reassigned? Are they taking other jobs? Has the new guy been picked and chosen who stays and who goes?

If you are going to assert yourself like this, you have to supply the reasons why. Otherwise your comment means nothing other than unsupported speculation.

Question regarding Charlie Strong. I'm asking because I do not know the answer.

Can a top tier 3 coach attract top OC/DC candidates? Overall, Texas is a top program any coach would want associated with. But another factor is the HC. Saban has national championships. Harbaugh has a Super Bowl ring. Both will be well respected. But can a young coach that had relative success in a weaker conference attract the best of the best assistant coaches?

Does anybody have concerns about Harbaugh as a recruiter? He will go up against Briles and Sumlin as well as out-of staters like Miles and Saban. He could, of course, hire a dynamite staff but he has not had to recruit in the NFL and I think it's a bit more involved than simply flashing your SB ring.

Awesome info McPhaul! A question for you. A poster on TOS posted a contract was written up for 8.5, any knowledge of this contract?

Good points. I think there are only a few reasons why they signed them.

1. Security

2. They got a fairly juicy raise.

3. Most are still yet to play there bowl game. Looks good to the current team that coach will still be here with us next year, which ties back into #1 and the current recruiting class.

I have the same question about him, but he is intriguing. Considering he's more of a defensive-minded coach, I really like what he and the OC did with the offense and Teddy Bridgewater.

I look at it like this; I really want Saban or John H, but if Strong is our guy, everyone has to start building championships somewhere.

A really excellent question that I haven't seen discussed anywhere. One may love the company and be excited about the job and his salary - but how about his new boss? Is he an idiot, or not, and will you like him?

I think the coaching profession is a pretty tightly knit group and everyone either knows each other or has heard about each other. Don't kid yourself, either these are really smart guys and I doubt anyone would want to play chess with them.

This would be a great question to ask the coaches on this board - I would LOVE to hear their answers.

No question John Harbaugh is a terrific coach. I wonder however about the transition from a long stint in the NFL to the more interesting aspects of the college game, specifically recruiting.

Just wondering since I believe recruiting has been the thing that has taxed many coaches most severely. Not because of the work load, I think it's more a case of dealing with flighty, unpredictable 18 years olds, and that group seems to get more convinced of their own importance every year.

Thanks Darrell,I just don't see Harbaugh as a good fit Right Now. We need a bigger splash that will turn recruits eye our way and I don't think he does that in Texas. No ties to high school coaches, hasn't recruited in years etc. He is a CEO type guy and we need a football coach right now. If it's not going to be Saban then I'm good with Briles or Fisher. Hell, I'm ok with any of these three being 1a,b or c. JMO but where this program is right now I'm out oh Harbaugh.
Mack didn't have any ties to the Texas high school coaches when he got here either. The ties are firmly in place thanks too Mack. The next coach just has to maintain the ties, which will be difficult but not impossible since Mack set the bar very, very high with the HS coaches.

So if it were to be Harbaugh, how long would he stay here? Heard that Michigan wanted him really bad a few years back and he turned him down. What's not to say if they came calling ,he would bolt. Best have a huge buyout contract.

What could you possibly learn from watching a coach on YouTube?
Just watch him as he is mic'd up on the sideline. Watch how the players and assistants respond and interact with him.
