CROSSFIRE with McPhaul - NEW YEAR’S DAY EDITION

FWIW - watch the Wisconsin/S. Carolina game, going on right now. Gary Anderson (a potential HC for UT) and Jedoveon Clowney (my choice for the first pick in the draft) are worth watching in this game.

"The “T” Association attendees also wanted to have continued access to the program like they had had with Mack."
As long as there is no meddling among former athletes and BMD's. In fact, I believe Saban included this in his list of demands.
Having former players around is a good thing.

Jock sniffers with their own locker is another.

I think it could very well end up being Jimbo Fisher.

My top three are

1. Fisher

2. Briles

3. John Harbaugh

I LOVE this CrossFire. I've done some reading and I'm moving Strong up on my list.

Yeah, I like Fisher as well. But I happen to believe that a coach signing an extension means what it means. And I think anything past that is just grasping at straws and wishful thinking.

Of course, this means Briles would not be a candidate either.

So, of your three, who does this leave?

Maybe we have discovered the next head coach for the University of Texas? Hmmmmmm.

Great stuff, sir. Many thanks.

The T-Ring members' wants: more titles--check, continued access--conditional check (I have to hope there's not this great big fraternity atmosphere, which seemed overdone with Mack).

The football players and coaches want Briles.
That is who should be right after Saban. No questions asked. Football people know football.

I like Harbaugh....however I have some pauses with him. He doesn't know the state, hasn't coached college ball in a long time and the offenses in the Big 12 are not like the NFL. Its apples and oranges. He would have to get a DYNAMITE staff around him to help alleviate some of these possible issues. He would have the money to do so.

On Briles again, he is a Texan and is liked by high school coaches. He is one of us that has done it the hard way. His players play with an edge and he coaches with an edge. He coaches like a Texan should...with confidence and toughness. Finally, his offense is dynamic and its not a fluke. It is sound and is predicated off the run which sets up the rest of his playbook off PA and screens. Briles began his career as a DC so to think he ignores that is foolish.

Saban is the no-brainer....then its Briles.
Winner of thread by Coach

I think it is wise that you do. He hasn't signed an extension either.

Why is that a problem? It is a fraternity, and they should have access.

Thanks Darrell,

I just don't see Harbaugh as a good fit Right Now. We need a bigger splash that will turn recruits eye our way and I don't think he does that in Texas. No ties to high school coaches, hasn't recruited in years etc. He is a CEO type guy and we need a football coach right now. If it's not going to be Saban then I'm good with Briles or Fisher. Hell, I'm ok with any of these three being 1a,b or c. JMO but where this program is right now I'm out oh Harbaugh.

The extensions all of these coaches are signing are as useless as the paper they're written on. Especially with no buyout clause in them. Even the ones with buyouts are pretty much useless. Coaches are mercenaries now days when it comes to big time college football.

That's a damn fine report. You guys are warming me up to John Harbaugh. Exciting week ahead.

I just don't get a warm, fuzzy feeling with Harbaugh. I think it takes more than a Super Bowl ring to recruit. To change our soft culture I think we need an in your face coach like Saban, Fisher, Jim Harbaugh, or Strong. Just don't see John Harbaugh being that guy.

McP - thanks once again for a very thorough report that pulls no punches. In your opinion could Harbaugh knock his interview out of the park and steal the job much like Patterson did with the AD job when Oliver Luck seemed to be the clear favorite? Do you think this would factor in Nick coming to his decision much sooner than early next week?

After reading this, I think it is basically Saban or Fisher with Harbaugh a close second. If it is Saban we will know by Sunday. If he took the job, it would leak if they tried to hide it much longer than that. If we don't know by Tuesday then that means Fisher is the guy. He plays Monday night and win or lose would want time with his team. If it is Harbaugh, then we would know by Tuesday along with Briles. If we wait until next Friday, it is Fisher. Strong is a good coach. If he gets the job we will know by the weekend and it means we understand that nobody else wants it. It would be a diappointment, but not the worst consolation. Just shows how huge this job is. Just my gut feeling.

As long as there is a 'business only' atmosphere during practice. No meet-n-greet social hours, especially with BMD's and the like.
