AUSTIN -- Longhorns redshirt senior tight end M.J. McFarland has elected to transfer, he confirmed Wednesday. He has been given an unconditional release from his scholarship and will depart the program after four seasons.

"Sometimes in life you have to listen to your heart instead of your mind, and I have decided to move on a play my last year elsewhere," McFarland said. "It was a tough decision because I love Texas, and I've met a lot of great people who have made a tremendous impact in my life. I want thank Coach (Charlie) Strong and the staff for allowing me the opportunity to play at UT. It has truly been a privilege. I am a Texas alumnus now, I have my degree, and I will forever be a Longhorn."

McFarland played in 36 career games, including eight starts, and caught 19 passes for 178 yards and three TDs. As a junior in 2014, he played in all 13 games with four starts and had 11 receptions for 53 yards and two TDs. A native of El Paso, Texas, he is a two-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection and graduated in May 2014 with a degree in applied learning and development.

I wish the kid luck. He went about it the right way. Got his degree, kept his grades up and gave his time to the team. He just knows that he wouldn't have an opportunity to shine here next year.

Differences with staff?  Otherwise why leave if he loves Texas and would clearly be seeing the field.

Wonder if he looks at Tech, being from El Paso and all.

What about UTEP being from El Paso? Could he go to Tech or would we ban that move to a conference opponent? Can't see him going to Tech, Heresy!

Yes, I rmbr when he was the next great TE hope

How many of those have we had since Finley?

Blaine irvy could have been the guy, but had some rotten injury luck

Next man up, Devonaire .....

Is pot not an approved concussion protocol aid?

Pretty sure it is in Colorado, but not sure about New Mexico.

McFarland is a good guy, I actually think this was just an honest mistake. I tend to believe what he said happened.
