Don't think that is Patterson's list at all. Patterson is a pro, he's not going to leak anything to the BOR, except the 1 or 2 on the committee. They don't want another Saban circus on their hands. Briles isn't coming, MOra sucks, and Harbaugh is a long wait and a big reach

Mora is probably the candidate mentioned I have the least enthusiasm for. His coaching record is average (fired from two NFL jobs and 9-5/9-3 at UCLA) and he has no Texas ties. I really can not see what the attraction with him is other than potential availability. Seems to me that just because a coach is in a NC game or has playoffs ahead of them does not me we can't accurately guage their interest and likelihood of signing. I would gladly wait, despite the harm to recruiting this year it may cause, in order to get the coach that we really want for years to come. This hire needs to be a home run.

The more I think about it, the more I think Briles needs to be the guy. I just do not see us waiting long enough for one of the NFL guys or title game coaches. Meyer isn't coming. I doubt Mora would considering he just passed on his alma mater a couple of weeks ago. Once you eliminate those names Briles is pretty much the best one standing.
Briles is certainly the simplest option.

mora jr is what i expect, not in the least bit what i want.
i do not see how this is complicated.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

who gives a shit where or what they are currently doing.

go to each one with the same package.

8.5 with incentives... yes or no?

#1 says no, then to #2, etc...

if you get to #5 and still no coach.

go back to #1

9 mm with incentives... yes or no?

in this day and age you simply cant do a meh hire. not this University and certainly not with the resources that are available.

my guess is that this decision will be over thought.

I agree with you. We shouldn't make a "comfort hire". We need to make someone say Yes. The return will be much greater on investment. With a "Meh" hire, you run the risk of continuing the down fall of the Texas brand. At least a big name will give us a big boost in recruiting.

Harbaugh
Briles

Mora jr.

In that order

If it were not for Fisher coaching in the MNC, he would would looked at as a more viable candidate.

Texas does not want to wait that long to name the next HC. Which confuses me b/c Harbaugh could be tied up for an extensive time too?
I'm confused too. As such, I'm not buying that limited list. Any list without Fisher and Malzahn under serious consideration are/seem inaccurate. Not picking on McPhaul, but have to believe the list is:

1. Harbaugh

Followed by (in no order):

Fisher

Meyer

Malzahn

McPhaul,

Tell your guy Mora Jr. would be terrible. He would get eaten alive by the expectations and pressure here. He is a better fit for the west coasters. He's a little too volatile for me.

What about a dark horse like Gary Andersen at Wisconsin?

I would wait for Harbaugh no matter how far into the playoffs SF goes as long as we know he is locked up.

Nakona, don't you think Anderson needs another year at WI before being really viable for Texas, Prior to that he was at Utah State. That is essentially a huge jump in 2 years.

Bobby Burton, is that you?

;)

Is it your opinion that Briles would leave before the BCS game? If not, then you have to wait for him just as long as the other coaches in the championship game (less than a week difference in game days).

Briles and Mora. No thanks. Both have proved nothing, IMO.
Briles keeps coaching Heisman caliber (and winner) QB's and has Baylor - B A Y L O R - a top 10 to 15 team in the nation. Briles is a stud.

I'd rather have Mack than Mora, Jr.

Briles just signed an extension with a hefty buyout. Plus they have the whole new stadium thing that would not have happened but for him.

I have always had the perception that he is anti-UT but maybe that's wrong or at least maybe it is no longer true.

On the other hand, he had a lot of pluses, starting with his somewhat unique offense.

His players appear to be very loyal to him. And they walk onto the field with some swag (dont hate, this is still Baylor we are talking about).

He is still young enough.

He can recruit. And not just offense.

He has shown a knack for finding the hidden gems among the 3* ranks and then developing them. Admittedly this has been mostly on offense, but would still be a refreshing new concept in Austin.

Not saying I agree or disagree, but Briles won the Big XII, at Baylor. Not sure why some continue to disregard that.

Do you disagree with that list?
It is the list Bobby posted today:

I'm told that the Longhorns are focusing on precious few candidates.

I am told they are:

Jimbo Fisher – Florida State

Gus Malzahn – Auburn

Urban Meyer – Ohio State

Jim Harbaugh – San Francisco 49ers

I think Franklin would bring more to the table than Mora. He's a great recruiter and has won recruiting battles in the SEC against some of the big boys.
