Guerin Emig: Southmoore quarterback Casey Thompson crosses the Red River because it's the right way to go
Autoplay: On | Off
OKLAHOMA CITY — As freshman Charles Thompson sailed past Texas’ lead-footed defenders during his 55-yard touchdown breeze that 1987 afternoon in the Cotton Bowl, Brent Musburger told CBS viewers: “Goodbye!â€
Thirty years later, Casey Thompson, son of Oklahoma’s one-time wishbone wonder boy, told the Longhorns at his commitment declaration: “Hello!â€
How on earth?
How did we arrive at the moment in the Southmoore High School gym Thursday when Casey Thompson, the SaberCats’ four-star junior quarterback, put on a Texas cap, removed his jacket to show off a Texas shirt and started flashing “Hook ’em Horns†to everybody taking his picture?
How is this Sooners legacy crossing the Red River to assist the burnt orange enemy?
Here’s how: With reason and clarity.
“It was a process that was very ongoing, that I prayed about and thought about day and night,†Thompson said.
“Casey is his own person,†said Kendal Thompson, the older brother who starred for Southmoore before Casey and signed with OU before transferring to Utah. “Casey’s got to do what’s best for Casey.â€
“We had to take off all the colors, whether they were Oklahoma, Texas, Miami, North Carolina, whoever,†Charles Thompson said, “and look at the best fit.â€
For his son in this situation, that’s Texas, regardless of how uncomfortable that might seem.
They wanted to take a picture of Charles and Casey flashing “Hook ’em†in Tom Herman’s office during Casey’s recruiting visit. Charles couldn’t.
“It’s going to take years and years — there’s things embedded in me — to do that,†he said.
That did not, however, cloud the view of his son, and how he connected with Texas’ first-year coach.
“I don’t think I would be at the University of Texas if Tom Herman was not there,†Casey Thompson said Thursday. “Whenever I sat down with him, he was describing how he coached his players and the national championship game he coached in at Ohio State. Just the passion in his voice. He has love for his players that I have never seen before.
“That’s what impressed me the most on my visit, how passionate he was. He was very sincere.â€
Don’t read between the lines. That isn’t a jab at Bob Stoops or OU. All Thompson parties swore the relationship, and respect, between their family, Stoops and his assistants is fine. Casey said he keeps in touch with offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.
The fact of the matter is the Sooners fell from Thompson’s list in August when Cameron Rising, a four-star quarterback from Newbury Park, California, committed to OU.
“Coach Riley told me they were only going to take one quarterback,†Thompson said.
“When Oklahoma offered Casey last summer, he was certainly excited about that,†Charles Thompson said. “But we had made a commitment that we would go through the process, being that Kendal kind of committed early (in November of his junior year at Southmoore, right after OU offered him a scholarship). We wanted to make sure we went through the full matrix of the process to know what was truly right for him so he would never have any second thoughts. Oklahoma decided to take another quarterback, as did other schools ...
“But Casey all along felt like the right school would come.â€
The Thompsons didn’t panic; they simply trusted their process. By the end of his junior season in December, Casey said, he was pretty much down to Arizona State and North Carolina.
Then Herman, who had recruited Thompson as Houston’s head coach, replaced Charlie Strong at Texas. Herman brought in Tim Beck, who had recruited Thompson as Ohio State co-offensive coordinator.
What was it Kendal Thompson had advised his brother as the recruiting intensified?
“Look at this in black and white. Football facts,†Kendal said. “Look at the roster, look at the coaching staff, look at the offensive scheme. Going through two different programs, that’s the main thing I could tell him based on my experiences. You want to go to a place where going in, you know you’re putting yourself in a position to thrive, and you want to go to a place where you’re wanted.â€
Herman wanted Thompson. It was a matter of reciprocation.
“We took a trip down there, my first time actually going to the campus and seeing Texas from a different perspective from the Red River Shootout in Dallas,†Charles Thompson said. “Just looking at everything, looking at the quarterback room and realizing they only had two scholarship quarterbacks in there, being that Herman likes the style that Casey is, has shown a history of playing that kind of quarterback, from recruiting J.T. Barrett out of Wichita Falls to go to Ohio State to when he had Greg Ward.
“The situation just kind of felt right.â€
“I’ve known for probably a month now,†Casey admitted Thursday.
He had a little fun at the ceremony anyhow, putting on Miami and North Carolina caps before sticking with Texas’. Good for him.
The young man has been recruited since he was a ninth grader. He saw his older brother go through it, and then go through trying times in college after making a snap decision.
Casey wanted to arrive at whatever decision he would make fully at peace. He wanted to be happy. Posing for pictures with Southmoore students and coaches, introducing his grandmother to reporters, joking around with Kendal and former OU defensive back/fellow SaberCat Julian Wilson, he sure looked happy.
“I didn’t have any Texas gear or a Texas hat. This is my first time wearing orange,†Thompson said. “I know people around here aren’t going to like it. I’m going to get a lot of criticism. But the real fans, the real Casey Thompson fans, will be there to support me no matter what.â€
It should be easy for everyone to support him, actually. Here is a four-star quarterback, an OU legacy, crossing the Red River because it’s the most sensible way to go.
