Charlie Strong relieves Shawn Watson of play-calling duties

I'm glad Watson was relieved of the OC.  Without mincing words, he was awful.  But for me this is taking away from my disappointment in the defense and Charlie/Bedford.  It's not like I want to clean house - far from it - I just hope Strong recognzies that his unit wasn't all that impressive, either.  In fact I might argue that I'm more disappointed in the D which I expected to be pretty damn good uner Strong, even only in year 2.

I checked Norvell's record as an OC and it's mixed. He was Nebraska's OC for three years under Bill Callahan which shows he did a good job. The offense was listed as the West Coast offense. His last year as OC at Nebraska, he was the boss of Shawn Watson who was a position coach.

He made the mistake of going to UCLA as OC for Karl Dorrell for one season where he didn't do well. Again the offense was listed as the West Coast offense.

Most of know on how he did at OU, the offense was good until Blake Bell and Trevor Knight were the QBs. Norvell was Co-OC during the OU-UT when they beat us 55-17. The offense was listed as No huddle.

Norvell has never been OC in an offense labeled as the spread. My concern is how much he knows and can coach the spread which will help Jerrod Heard. We were told we have the spread during the off season which wasn't true.
Anybody that believes Norvell was actually the play caller and true OC under Calllahan is sadly mistaken. He may have carried the title of OC but Callahan is an egotistical asshole who called his own plays and listened to no one.

For the record, I don't think Norvell will be the OC next season either. Unless Texas has a miraculous turn around and wins the Big 12 or something.
At this point, 8-4 should be construed as "miraculous".

I'm on a conference call so I just watched without sound but from what I saw, the Cinn player hit the sooner late. If that is what he was yelling at the ref for, that shows the players he has their backs.
Yes, he had alot of sooner support for that aspect (despite the flag)

He was screaming at the Cinci player (who smartly walked away), then at the ref

Our last three games have been against TCU, Arkansas, and Notre Dame.  Not a directional school to be found.  This team isn't very talented.  The results weren't pleasant, but they also weren't terribly surprising.

The defense isn't going to be 'good' because they don't have the talent or experience to play to that level yet - no matter how good the coaching.  What they are is competent, and what they do is compete.

The same can not be said for the offense.
They give up 30+ points a game to good teams, and even bad ones ( ISU )...... Our offense didn't have talent and experience either and Watson is done as OC, so why not Bedford too.????

Competent and compete ? I don't think we looked too competent or competed very well against TCU, Arky, and ND. Our defense didn't compete well against ISU last year...Our offense won that game.

We need a new DC as much as we need a new OC.

Rod Babers made the point that in 14 games, Watson's offense has scored 10 or fewer points 6 times.

Harsin had 1 of those in his tenure.

Major 2 in his year.

Davis has 7 in 13 years.

TCU averaged 46.5 pts a game and 533 yards per game.

Against TCU the Texas defense only gave up 34 points and 368 yards to the second best offense in college football.

14 of those 34  TCU points came on drives of less than 18 yards because of fumbles/interceptions.

Texas offense turned the ball over 6 times against TCU.

Arkansas averaged 33 points and 406yds per game last season.

The Texas defense held them to 24 points and 351 yards.

Texas offense turned the ball over twice, including one fumble in the end zone.

Arkansas easily had the biggest, and one of the best, offensive lines in college football last season.

Line three explains why TCU didn't have MORE yards and Texas was able to hold them under 500 yards.

Like ND last week, Bedford's D wasn't stopping TCU no matter how long the drive.

ONLY 34 points ???? ONLY 34 points ???...... SMH

Want to explain the ISU game ?

Those points ----73 vs Nichols  State; 47 vs Texas tech, 52 vs N. Illinios, 45 vs UAB

Bet the yards in those games were huge too.

Held to 28 and 21 by Auburn and  Aggy, and  14 by Mizzou ........Others held them under 20 as well.

Stats are for losers anyway they say.

Our defense is getting its butt handed to it, just like our offense. All I am saying is .......Changes need to be made on BOTH sides of the ball, NOT just the offense.

I don't think you even know what you're arguing at this point.

But for the record - TCU was for 5-15 on third downs in that game.  They weren't close to the dominate offensive machine they had been that season.

Of 14 total offensive posessions-  TCU punted 6 times and ended another two series on an INT and a Fumble.

TCU's first two scores came on drives of 2 yards and 12 yards.

Through the first three quarters the defense had given up a total of 13 points and one long drive.

As for the ISU game - they shit the bed.  It happens.   Thankfully the offense actually showed up that game and they got the win.

Anyone trying to argue the defense was in anyway even close to the disaster the offense was is delusional.
