As for the idea that Mack didn't know football, you don't win as many games as he did, and build or rebuild three programs by being dumber than a box of rocks. Even Barry Switzer, who had Mack for a year as an assistant, said Mack was the best offensive mind he had on his staff. I've always thought that at UT, Mack got so wrapped up in being the C.E.O. of Longhorns, Inc. that he just kinda forgot that he needed to also coach some football. He turned the football thing over to his assistants, and trusted them to do the job. Some did do some good work. Too many didn't. Mack has also always seemed like a "pleaser". I don't know what went on when the doors closed, but publicly at least, he seemed to coddle the players, give them a sense of entitlement. He also seemed to take a more passive approach against our fiercest rival, OU, by "surviving the surge". Coach Strong won't try to survive any surge, nor do I get the idea that he'll coddle players. He's gonna be a massive change from Mack, and that change is needed right now for UT to have any chance at getting back into championship contention. I'm just sayin' Mack knew football...he just forgot to coach it for too long at UT. He needed to come down out of the office and get his hands dirty...he didn't.
That's what we are all hoping happens! I haven't been this excited for the Longhorns since we lost to Bama in the NC.On a hot Saturday night in Austin, Texas.... or a chilly Saturday morning at the Cotton Bowl......
Can you see this guy doing work and kicking ass? I sure the hell can and I'm excited about it.
