The point on a brisket is typically the fattiest cut. Pitmasters often trim the point (and select edges) off a brisket and return those pieces to the smoker.

Are burnt ends tough, chewy worthless cuts of meat, or are they heavenly bites of smoky goodness? It depends on who you ask...

Rather than discard the trimmings and fat, we choose to savor all the information that flows through the site. So, sit down and help yourself to some burnt ends.

The Houston Talent Talking

At this point in the cycle, it is no secret that the 2018 talent resides in Houston. We are also at the point in the cycle is where the elite recruits’ eyes start to adjust to the spotlight. Players are becoming media savvy, and the top talents in the area begin connecting with each other.

Since most of the talent can be found in Houston, there is currently a huge group text between all the top recruits in the Houston area. Guys like Mustapha Muhammad, Malcolm Epps, Leon O’Neal, Taye Barber, Keondre Coburn, the Lamar guys, Jalen Preston, Brennan Eagles, and a few other big time names.

Every big-time guy I spoke with talks about seeing whether “the coaches are telling the truth.” These young men take what coaches are telling them and bounce it off of each other. They also decide where they’ll visit and what camps they’ll attend. It will be imperative to get a guy on the inside of the group chat on your side as a coach.

D’Shawn Jamison

D’Shawn Jamison already has an offer to play in the Under Armour All-American Game, but he still showed up and did well. Showed once again he is one of the best field corners in the state. In fact, I think he’s one of the top 3 cover corners in the state. He also was one of the two finalists to win the speed competition that Under Armour put on. Apprently one of the best scores in the nation.

D’Shawn will bring dropping his top five at end of summer and will decide at the end of the season. But the battle is really down to Texas and TCU. In fact, those two’s spring games are the only trips D’Shawn Jamison has planned at the moment.

His deciding factors will be consistency, showing love, and academics. He’s being recruited as a corner and nickel. Another thing that will be a big deciding factor for him is where his fellow Lamar guys go.

Jalen Green

The impressive DB out of Houston Heights will be visiting Texas on March 25th. Jalen Green had a good relationship with Herman and his staff when Herman was at UH, so Jalen is looking forward to seeing the former Houston staff. Currently, Jalen and Coach Washington are in constant contact, with Jalen mentioning that “[Coach Washington] checks up on me every day to see how I’m doing.”

His battle comes down to Texas A&M, LSU, and Texas. He will be attending all three schools' spring games, and will release his top school at the end of June. He’ll be a signing day decision.

Keondre Coburn

Keondre showed up to camp in his pajamas, since camp was held right down the street from his house. That's an immediate plus, and he backs up his pj's with his words and his talent. Keondre was by far the best DT on the field, making up for a sub-par performance at the Opening. In fact, I don’t recall him losing a rep one single time. I’m a lot higher on the Spring Westfield product after Sunday.

Keondre is very high on the Longhorns. They have a very nice foothold in his battle, especially since he and Coach Corby Meekins are in constant contact. “Every day I play 8-ball with Coach Meekins, losing all the time but I'm going to get him back [laughter]. I beat him the first time, [and] ever since then, I don't know who's playing for him because he's been beating me." Keondre is trying to slow things down, but I don’t think he’ll make it to signing day without making his decision.

Keondre will be attending Texas’ Spring game, A&M’s Friday Night Lights and he will make a big West Coast trip to see a number of Pac-12 schools. He also may visit Michigan and Ohio State.

Anthony Cook

Cook once again had a spectacular camp, proving himself to be among the top players in the nation.

Cook started off with some high praise for Texas and Clemson, “I loved Clemson. I have a good relationship with their DB Coach Mike Reed. Every time I’ve been to Texas, I liked Texas, but I especially like the new coaching staff.” He also plans to make it out to LSU and Ohio State. He told us the Clemson facilities are the best he’s ever seen.

The Texas coaching staff has been trying to sell Anthony Cook on being the class to jumpstart Texas and the commit to jumpstart the class. “Texas is definitely in the mix only because I feel [that] if I was to go to Texas ,my class would be the turning point in Texas… Revolution 18, that’s what they’re talking about… They’re always saying, ‘if you commit, then the other guys will follow,’ and different things like that.”

Anthony Cook will be back in Austin for the spring game.

Leon O’Neal

Talk about impressive. Leon O’Neal has quickly become a favorite of mine due to his on-field play. Leon is constantly telling me that he is the best safety in the nation, and honestly, he’s proving it on the field. He’s long and smart on the field, a vocal leader, and in short, Leon is the total package.

Leon got his Under Armour All-American Game invite and was visibly hyped about it. He said, “blessed. I’m blessed to get an invite to Orlando to prove that I’m the best safety. You know it’s my goal to prove that I’m the best.”

From here on out, Leon will be putting some of the competitions to the side to focus on school and to prepare for a summer of making college trips. He wants to go visit the West Coast over the summer and to make a big swing through the Golden Coast to visit USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Cal.

Leon doesn’t know if he’ll make the Texas trip right now, but he’ll be visiting Texas sometime this spring. He will be at Texas A&M the 31st, and his Top 10 will be coming out after Spring Football season.

Leon O’Neal is a must get.

THE WRs

Jalen Preston and Brennan Eagles

While Jalen Preston was a little more inconsistent in the Opening, and the Opening was Brennan Eagles' coming out party, during the Under Armour camp, the roles more or less switched. Brennan Eagles was a little more inconsistent and was having trouble coming out of his routes (a problem I’ve heard he has from a coach or two) and Jalen Preston was making some impressive catches.

That isn’t to say that Brennan Eagles didn’t have a good camp, because he did. It just wasn’t as spectacular as the Opening. I still think Brennan Eagles is one of the best #1 WRs in the state.

I wasn’t that high on Jalen Preston coming into the camp, but I saw some things that piqued my interest. While he’s got very rigid hips, runs a little funky, and jumps with two feet, he’s as athletic as they come.  The thing about the above blemishes are that they can be coached away by a good S&C coach. Put together, Jalen is a ridiculous weapon.

Jalen Preston will be attending the Baylor, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, and LSU spring games.

Al’vonte Woodard

The Lamar WR stated his case for being the top WR in the state Sunday, having the most impressive camp by far out of the WRs in attendance. He runs some of the cleanest routes, he’s got rocket boosters for legs, and his hands seem to be made of glue. He also has a good frame at 6’1” and carries a good 190 pounds. He has consistently been one of the top performers in the city of Houston. In fact, he’s shuffling between the #1 to #3 best WR in the state, in my opinion.

Texas is one of the schools Al’vonte has near the top of his list. In fact, he’ll be visiting Texas again on Saturday and then again for the spring game. At this point, I’m pretty comfortable with Texas’ position with Al’vonte.

Miles Battle

The Cy Creek WR has been silently one of the better WRs in every camp I’ve seen him in. He was one of the top WRs in the Houston regional for the Opening, the WR MVP of the Dallas Opening Regional, and once again showed his speed and hands this past Sunday. He was one of the top four performers at the Under Armour speed tests, and people in the media are still pretty quiet on him, though that won't last for much longer.

Miles Battle is underrated, though he is an athlete that people need to know about. This guy is fast, long, and consistent.

Texas is now taking a long hard look at Battle, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him with a Longhorn offer by the end of the summer.

Miles is currently being recruited by LSU, Ole Miss, TCU, and Baylor.

Tommy Bush

Another slept on prospect with some top end speed, Tommy Bush once again showed out at the camp.Bush took to beating some of the top DBs in the state like D’Shawn Jamison and Starland Baldwin. He is another long, athletic WR with some pretty remarkable hands and crisp routes.

Tommy was one of the finalists for the “illSpeed” speed competition Sunday, and earned himself an invite to the Under Armour All-American game. After finding out he was invited, he said, “it’s amazing. You don’t just expect it, so to get it is a real honor.”

Texas and Tommy have cooled off on each other, but if Texas were to bring up contact with the special talent again, Tommy would still be very open to the Longhorns.

Jaylen Waddle

If we talk about speed, then we have to bring up the SPC talent who ran a 4.3 40. That is the fastest time that I have seen through the events that I have had the opportunity to cover. That 40 time translates to the field where Jaylen has proven himself as a top slot WR time and time again. He burned so many kids on Sunday that they ran out of aloe vera and ice. He got an offer to play in the Under Armour All-American game but came up just short of the speed challenge.

Right now, the schools that are recruiting him the hardest are Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon, and FSU. In fact, Marvin Wilson is recruiting him hard to follow him to the Sunshine State to play for the Seminoles.

On Coach Mehringer: “I like Coach Mehringer. He’s real cool and every time I go up there he shows me a good time. I plan on visiting him soon.”

Taye Barber

The winner of the “illSpeed” speed contest was the Cy Springs slot WR. I’ve talked about Taye before, but I’m going to reiterate how Taye is one of the most slept on WRs in the state in my opinion. Despite having played QB for some of the last season, and being thrown all over the field position-wise, Taye Barber runs some nice routes with some elite speed. His hands aren’t a question either. The dude is an impressive athlete.

There was one play by Taye where he ran a corner-post where he turned the DB around. The DB was actually lost on the field due to Taye’s speed and quick route cuts. When Taye turned for the ball, there wasn’t a guy within 10 yards of him.

Right now, Mizzou, Arizona, and Kansas are really hitting him up, but I’m maintaining that Taye will blow up.

O'Neal knows that he's going to go to aggy on a certain date and the West Coast trip. But he's not sure when he'll be visiting Texas. That doesn't sound very promising to me. Someone change my mind.

Way too early to panic on O'Neal. He's going to log some miles and take some trips. Competition will be thick, but Texas is in the mix.

Winning games will put Texas back into the top schools of these guys. They may like Texas but if we can't show them improvement, they'll look elsewhere.
