The point on a brisket is typically the fattiest cut. Pitmasters often trim the point (and select edges) off a brisket and return those pieces to the smoker.

Are burnt ends tough, chewy worthless cuts of meat, or are they heavenly bites of smoky goodness? It depends on who you ask...

Rather than discard the trimmings and fat, we choose to savor all the information that flows through the site. So, sit down and help yourself to some burnt ends.

Two Texas commits faced off last Friday when Tope Imade led Arlington Bowie against Shane Buechele and Arlington Lamar.  The exciting game resulted in a 30-23 victory for Lamar on the strength of Buechele’s accurate passing.  We spoke with both Imade and Buechele following the game, and we were also able to get an opinion of Buechele's skillset from the opposing coach.  Arlington Bowie head coach Danny DeArman was frustrated after the loss, citing missed opportunities and turnovers, but he also couldn’t help but gush over the Lamar signal caller.  “He just makes throws you don’t see many kids able to make at the high school level,” DeArman told us.  “There were a couple of throws tonight, that if it was anyone else we’d be off the field, but Shane was able to put it in the perfect spot.”
As the son of former Texas Rangers baseball player Shane Buechele, we asked DeArman if the son of a professional athlete benefits from the standpoint of professionalism and understanding preparation.  DeArman elaborated, “I think that is a big part of it, the other thing is he has all the physical tools and he’s just so smart.  He understands and processes the game at a different level and he really sees the field well.”  We also spoke with a teacher at Lamar who talked about Buechele off the field.  “Shane is one of those yes sir, no sir people.  He inspires people to follow him because he’s constantly setting the example.  I know he’s a teenager, but he’s one of those guys that just gets it.”  We’ll have more on Buechele out later this week, but with the Texas program really searching for leadership and ability, Buechele is looking like a godsend for the Longhorns.

Speaking of Arlington-Bowie, here’s a name to keep an eye on for the 2017 class.  Linebacker Kylan Lewis is starting to see some recognition of his ability.  The dread-locked linebacker wears number 46, which led us to call him “Mini Malik” when we saw him on the sidelines a couple of weeks ago.  It turns out he has more in common with Texas freshman Malik Jefferson than jersey number and hairstyle.  Lewis terrorized the Lamar offense and got to Buechele several times on Friday night.  The former defensive end made the switch to linebacker this year and is best deployed as a pass rusher blitzing up the middle.  Texas linebacker coach Brian Jean-Mary checked on Lewis when he came through Bowie a couple of weeks ago, and it seems he’s now on the radar for 2017 recruits.

+++++

If Texas were to miss on their primary running back targets this season, there are two hidden gems located just miles from each other in the city of Arlington.  Bowie running back DeAndre Cook exploded for over 300 yards and two touchdowns on Friday night.  Cook is currently hearing from schools like Colorado State, Kansas, Louisiana Monroe, and SMU, but don’t let the schools on that list fool you.  Cook has great burst and his compact frame allows him to run behind a low center of gravity to bust through opposing tacklers.

+++++

Arlington Sam Houston runner Peytton Pickett is similarly small in stature but big on talent.  Pickett is hearing most from SMU and Kansas, while Oklahoma, Kansas State, TCU, and Missouri have indicated their interest.  Pickett would have a great interest in Texas should the Longhorns decide to throw their hat in the ring.  Brian Jean-Mary visited Sam Houston earlier this year and picked up film on Pickett, but Texas hasn’t contacted him as of yet.  Through five games, Pickett has accumulated 1017 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns.  Pickett is also close with both Buechele and Imade, so it’s clear he’d feel comfortable committing to Texas if the Longhorns were to offer.

+++++

Texas offered 2016 South Grand Prairie Safety Greg Eisworth over the weekend.  The Ole Miss commit stars primarily at quarterback for his high school team, but Eisworth will certainly play defensive back at the next level.  The early returns aren’t looking good for the Longhorns on this one.  Eisworth has been committed to Ole Miss since the spring, and a source told me he’s as solid as one can be.  We don’t expect the staff to give up on him, but it will take one heck of an effort to pry him away from his commitment to the Rebels.

+++++

With a search for offensive linemen ongoing, Texas might turn their focus back to Trophy Club (TX) Byron Nelson offensive lineman Kellen Diesch.  Diesch de-committed from Arkansas over the weekend and is opening things up in his recruitment.  The 6’7 270 lbs. tackle holds an offer from Texas, but he never seemed that high on the Longhorns before his commitment to the Razorbacks.  Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Baylor look to factor in here along with Arkansas who is still in the hunt.  If Texas could really get after Diesch they would have a great prospect on their hands with a lot of upside to develop.  Much like every other battle in state this year, Texas recruiters will have their work cut out for them.

+++++

HornSports high school football coverage rolls on this week, and Mike Roach will be out at a potential game of the year candidate for the DFW area.  Mansfield Lake Ridge led by Texas Tech commit Jett Duffy at quarterback take on Devin Williams and Mansfield Timberview.  Lake Ridge is steamrolling teams this year with their stingy defense featuring 2017 HornSports Top 50 linebacker Loren Mondy.  The Arizona State commit lines up all over the field for Lake Ridge, but specializes as an edge rusher.  Mondy has visited Texas several times this summer and seems to be open to the idea of flipping to Texas if they offered.  Keep it here Friday night for great coverage of the scores around the state as well as live action from the contests the site is covering.

Following a 50-7 TCU loss complete with players tweeting from the locker room at halftime, the Longhorns faced more trouble.  Monday saw a twitter war that exposed in-fighting between the young players on the team and the upper classmen trying to lead them.  How does that alter recruiting for Texas?  It turns out that it makes things even more difficult.  After talking to several recruits from around the state, the Texas program is showing a level of toxicity for all to see.  One DFW area recruit was set to attend the Red River Rivalry this weekend, but opted instead to go out of town to make a visit.  From talking to recruits, the losses don’t seem to matter as much as the finger pointing within the national media and on the social network.  Texas had a chance to sell early playing time and steady improvement to their top targets, but this scene is making recruits step back a bit.  The Longhorns are possibly a missed extra point and a better set of referees away from being 3-2 with wins over two ranked teams.  While those results are not the standard for this program, they are certainly better than the current state of the team.  A win in Dallas over a ranked Oklahoma team would do wonders to unify the current squad and save some face for top recruits out there.  While the Longhorns get an easier slate in the second half of the season, it might be too late if the wheels come off in Dallas this weekend.  If Charlie Strong and Jay Norvell haven’t already fired all of their guns, this is the week to do it.  In a season already chock full of crossroad games, this might present the last opportunity for Texas to turn things around.

We had a quick check-in with 2016 WR commit Collin Johnson yesterday.  Johnson recently tore his labrum and subsequently had surgery to repair it.  He didn't have much to say about the team's 50-7 loss to TCU but told us his shoulder is "healing nicely."  He also reiterated to us that he will be graduating early and joining the Longhorns in January, 2016.

+++++

Tennessee defensive tackle commit D'andre Christmas-Giles (St. Augustine High School - New Orleans, LA) picked up a Texas offer last week.  Christmas-Giles is 6-3, 290 lbs. and tells us Brick Haley has been recruiting him.  He told us he "is loving Texas" and hopes to build a stronger relationship with the coaching staff. Christmas-Giles told us today that he will take an OV to Texas but he doesn't have a firm date in mind just yet.  C-J is worth keeping a close eye on, as his verbal commitment to the Volunteers is soft.  He's a player the Longhorns could definitely flip.

+++++

We'll close tonight much like we did last week, with a tidbit on Charlie Strong and his immediate future at Texas.  We checked in with a source to see if thing have changed relative to Strong's stability or instability with the program.

"The tune is the same as it was last week despite the loss to TCU.  Charlie isn't going anywhere this year," our source indicated.

"It's difficult to watch the program struggle and lose in the manner they are losing but Strong will be back next year, period."

It is very difficult to convey the tone of a conversation in writing but from our perspective there is no second-guessing these statements.

Good stuff. More confirmation that Strong isn't going anywhere. The quicker folks swallow that pill the better. Changes need to be made but Strong isn't one. At least not this early.

Right now Charlie is safe. I reiterate right now. The bickering between young and old is actually seen as a good thing. Charlie has recruited some kids that have fight.

They are not afraid to back down from anyone. Yes the technique is not quite there, but the heart is. Dylan is lucky he didn't get his ass whipped in the locker room. This isn't the first time he has popped off. Just the first time publicly. He forgets to watch his position during film evidently.

Also the locker room isn't as divided as you might think. However there are some spilt blood types still in the locker room. Soooo when Charlie pulls the plug on them this week, it will cause a little ripple if we lose.

Need ol in a bad way.

Has anything changed with your thoughts on Texas position on maybe landing Brandon jones dontavious Jackson etc?

Not trying to pick a fight, but the referenced take is looking through burnt orange glasses IMO.  All were at fault with the banter back and forth on twitter, but one of the biggest problems that this program has currently and at the end of Mack Brown's tenure is all the BS talk off the field.  This look at me crap has to end and I thought a disciplinarian like Charlie Strong would accomplish that.  Evidently, I was wrong.

You want to show fight, do it on the field b/c in the long run that is the only place that matters.  This freshman class has a high opinion of itself with no results to show for it.  I could easily put on my burnt orange glasses and say "its growing pains", but other programs across the country are receiving solid performances from true freshman, so that theory gets blown out of the water as well.  I guess the true freshman can just say there is no senior leadership and be done with it.  Off the field talking BS.

I'm not sure Texas sits in the lead for anyone right now. Dontavious Jackson is probably still in a good position but they've slipped big time for McCulloch, Cuffee, etc. If this staff pulls off a Houdini act again I'll be blown away.

If this season tanks to the tune of 3-9 or worse and you follow that up with a terrible recruiting class all bets are off. If he does return for 2016 it will just delay the firing until December 2016. Now with that said lets all hope he gets the train back on the track.
I have to agree.

Texas has to finish the season but it's how they finish the season.

If they are 5-7 and played everyone (sans Baylor and OU) very close and loses a few like the Cal and Ok State game, then people see hope. Cal was like that last year. 5-7 but lost close games to Arizona and to USC. Both of which would have propelled them to bowl eligibility. Now, they are 5-0.

But if they finish 4-8 or 3-9 and were not competitive in games they should be competitive in, then that's a problem. Tech and West Virginia games are litmus test games for where the program is heading. Texas should not be comparing itself to OU or Baylor, they aren't on the same level. Tech and West Virginia are on the same level.

Yes, Cal is 5-0, but Texas might be the best team they've beaten.  They haven't beaten a team with a winning record (Washington is 2-2).  They have three straight games against ranked opponents - it will be interesting to see what they look like 3 weeks from now.

In about 30 minutes,

A group of select players will be available, followed by a session with Head Coach Augie Garrido. Players available will be Tres Barrera (junior C/1B), Morgan Cooper (junior pitcher), Connor Mayes (sophomore pitcher)  and Michael Cantu (sophomore C/1B).

Dylan is lucky he didn't get his ass whipped in the locker room. This isn't the first time he has popped off. Just the first time publicly. He forgets to watch his position during film evidently.
I hate to think of how poorly Dylan might play if he didn't watch film!

Don, did anything consequence come out of the availability yesterday?

Firstly, GET THESE KIDS OFF OF TWITTER!!! Jesus Christ! I know you cant just Gestapo these kids but it would seem pretty evident that some internet awareness training is deeply in need!

Secondly, while I support and believe in Strong(and want him to get a fair and reasonable chance), he created this rift in the locker-room. You cant go promoting and slobbering all over the freshman and expect there to be no friction in the locker-room with the upperclassmen. The best players should play but as good leaders this staff should have been able to see this coming 20 miles away. When I say I support Strong, I truly do... That said, the small things, like managing this locker room so poorly at an incredibly volatile time is killing us. Im glad that there are actual reports of these nonsense antics effecting our recruiting. I want Strong to succeed badly but beating ourselves on the field AND hurting ourselves off the field is going to have those calling for his head screaming even louder! You can't be jettisoning dudes off the roster at light speed then allowing the locker-room to consume itself.

HOOK EM!!! TEXAS STRONG!!!
