I'm thinking where you and I differ is the conclusion on Heard. I think Watson put that out there only to squash the idea of pulling the shirt off Heard. Think about it. Fans were not happy at all with Swoopes and the offense. For a few weeks there, the big question was why not pull the shirt?
I think Watson has his faults, but I also think he's a pretty wise man/coach. He throws that out there and avoids all kinds of BS. Meanwhile, he really has no clue where Heard is really at because all Heard has done is run for his life most of the season's practice.
I do not think Heard got meaningful snaps at any point during the season. He was third in line with a stated goal (by staff) of redshirting him. Then when Ash went down, suddenly the focus became preparing Swoopes (a large undertaking) that commanded most all of Watson's time.
This is why the bowl practices were crucial.
I'll say it again, just give the kid a shot. I think he's still that star I saw who put his team on his back to win two state titles.
Yes we do differ on the intent of Watson AND Strong's stating why Heard was not playing. I believe they were telling the truth, based on what I heard AND what 3 different other UT sites corroborated was going on with Heard in the practices.
It appears you think this was really all just a façade to justify not pulling Heard's red shirt. It sounds as if you think Strong and Watson were just being devious with the public - for the ulterior reason of keeping Heard's RS. Which begs the question - has Strong given any evidence of being anything other than a straight shooter?
So, ultimately,I base my conclusions on stated evidence and you base yours on "hunch" and dis-belief.
One of us is wrong. And, believe me, I hope it is me.
And, finally, what do you consider "meaningful" snaps? Snaps in preparation of starting the game or with the intent of entering a game at some point? Because, in truth, all snaps are meaningful - even scout team snaps. And do you really think the 3 weeks of practice before the bowl should have been dedicated to Heard for the year 2015? Especially with the understanding we SURE weren't going to pull his shirt for the last game of the year and, if anyone other than Swoops, needed snaps it was the back up to Swoopes - which Heard sure wasn't.
Also, I know for a fact that Heard got meaningful snaps in the spring and fall - the times when he and Swoopes were battling it out for the back up position to Ash and when Ash went down. A battle that was forced, through Strong's admission, because of Swoopes poor spring game performance. And, yet, Swoopes STILL beat him out - both times.
One of the Mikes, on chat, said he personally attended 4 HS games of Heard's. He said he was the real deal and believed he would be in college - based on his high school feats. However, he also admitted he has never seen him in college either. So this is the conundrum. He was great in high school, but the reports of his time in college have been very poor.
We all better pray that his crappy play in college was simply freshman jitters and college acclimation, This team needs more than wishful thinking - we need actual performance.
