Our number 2, I prefer Strong.

Bruce Feldman ‏@BFeldmanCBS 46m

#Vandy coach James Franklin has emerged as the clear frontrunner for the vacancy at #PennState, per source

Did psu use korn/ferry too? He was their second highest rated coach after strong. It doesn't surprise that two schools with strong academics chose coaches that emphasize it.

That would be a good hire for them. I wonder how he will handle cult of Paterno?

Looks like Franklin is confirmed to PSU

Awesome!!! Greg Roman (49ers) had interviewed that means he will likely be with Niners another year.

There's no way that Mack would win at Vanderbilt. I don't know why he would take that job if it were even offered.
They said that about Mack at Tulane and UNC and to a degree at TEXAS. . .

Having said that. . .why would Mack want to take such a big step down? but then applying my values to him. ..I'd enjoy the ESPN or sports booth/studio, my family and the wealth I have created. ..

I actually have to disagree here. If Mack were to take any job after Texas, I think Vanderbilt would be pretty high up there. Here are a few reasons:

1.) Relation

Brown played at Vanderbilt in his college days and grew up in the Tennessee area.

2.) Expectation

The expectations have risen since Franklin took over and proved that Vanderbilt can compete. But nobody in Nashville is expecting Vanderbilt to actually win the SEC anytime soon. So long as Mack could get the guys to a bowl game every year, I think Vandy would be happy.

3.) Location/Atmosphere

Vanderbilt is a fairly laid back school in one of the more beloved cities in the Nation. While it's not a destination spot, it's certainly not an area that Mack and Sally would be bad off retiring in.

4.) The Test

Mack would get one more opportunity to bring a school drifting above mediocrity into the Title chase. If he doesn't succeed, nobody blames him. If he does, it makes for an excellent story.

While I don't see Mack ever coaching again, I could see him coaching Vanderbilt if he wasn't ready to hang up the headset yet.

1. He may want to coach again.

2. He grew up about 100 miles down the road from VU - Cookeville.

3. His brother coached at VU in the 80s - he sucked.

4. He's probably considered "damaged goods" by higher profile schools that may be in the market for a coach.

5. He attended VU.

With all that being said, I'm thinking that David Williams, the AD, will want to go after a younger, more energetic coach. A rising star type. The two HC offers he has made in the past were for Malzahn (who accepted and changed his mind) and Franklin. Ironically, if this had happened 2 years ago, Diaz would have been the prototypical candidate...

It will be interesting to follow Strong and Franklin's careers going forward. Both going from "lesser" schools to iconic programs. Each the first black coach to the football program. Both starting behind the 8 ball: Franklin with the Sandusky hangover and Strong with a roster that has many mis-evaluations and average recruiting over the last few years. Should be very interesting.
