I think this is an excellent argument, a lot of people outside the beltway tend to believe Texas has too much of a stronghold on the Big 12, that they suffocate out any real competition and that the conference as a whole would do a lot better to support and build up some of the smaller schools.

2 conference championships in 16 years is having a stronghold on the conference that they are in? Please list the people who believe this. Seriously.

This was one of my first thoughts upon seeing the name Charlie Strong as a potential frontrunner in the wake of the retirement news hitting the wires. I said "uh oh, sounds like a Mack-approved hire."

As we all know Mack was in Florida recruiting this last week.
What we were not aware of is his plane stopped in Waco on the way back to Austin.

Mack had diner with Art Briles concerning the Texas job.

No chance that ever occurred. Art Briles would never break his freshly signed 10 year contract extension with Baylor...and if he did, that would ruin ALL credibility with his character. No school, especially The University, would ever consider hiring a coach capable of doing such an act.

He could never be trusted again, and would never do that anyway.

Any coach that has recently inked an extension or new contract is 100% off the table regarding our new hc vacancy, as well they should be...

Do to the delay and extensive media coverage of Mack's imminent decision, several good coaches are now securely signed and off the market.

Jimbo Fisher, although only 54 games as a head coach to his credit, has an 82% batting average.

Wrong. Contracts and extensions are no more than the equivalent of a prenuptial. If you break it there is penalty x. Coaches break contracts every year, probably more often than they don't since any coach another school would want to hire is likely under contract. And as far as trust goes how many times have we seen a coach emphatically deny he is leaving and then within a month is employed elsewhere and still be in demand? At the end of the day the only buyout I know of that is probably too much is Bill O'Brian at north of 13 million. Anyone else that wants to coach Texas will if Texas wants them too.

I don't believe Art is coming, but it has nothing to do with signing a contract, and everything to do with him being content in Waco. Opportunities to coach a top 5 program do not occur often and when they do all bets are off. Who you trust or any other fan or sportswriter does is irrelevant. The people that do the hiring want a winner and most fans will rationalize any hire if he wins.

Here we go again, knocking Art Briles for that stuff that has never been proven. People like to assume that Briles had Stephenville on steroids during their run of four state championships. Yet despite all of the accusations, nobody has ever been able to prove there was so much as one illegal substance in those locker rooms. As someone who was in Stephenville during that time and knew Briles, it's ridiculous that he's had to deal with the continuous accusations with no proof. There was an investigation done and nothing turned up.

Doesn't make a lot of sense from a timing perspective. All indications on Friday was he was resolute in his desire to continue coaching but stopped in Waco to talk to another coach about his job?

My naivete is shared by many, then. Again, I would be amazed to see any coach that recently inked a long-term extension break that to go elsewhere.

Breaking a freshly inked and executed long term extension, and utilizing the buy-out clause of a contract several years executed is definitely two different things entirely.

As for first or third generation alumnus, kudos to all Texas Exes.
