I'd be excited just considering the way I felt 24 hours ago when I thought Mack was possibly returning! Tht said, he is no Saban or Harbaugh. A sure thing hire that potentially changes our culture for decades. He would be in the next teir though for me.

Briles is by no means "sexy" but he's a tireless worker that kids love playing for. The guy is an ass and has some questionable history in terms of recruiting and steroids, but he wins ball games and took BAYLOR from a "we're going to lose 8 games at the minimum" to a "we're going to beat every damn team we play and do it with style" mentality.
It does little for me, but if you want a guy to get us back to the top very quickly, Briles could do it. Give him a blank check for a staff and we'll be fine. He'd recruit the hell out of Texas. Probably would do well nationally too.

All that said, give me Harbaugh and I'm happier than if we got Saban.

Great site yall have going here, been lurking for a few weeks now and this coupled with IT has been great in terms of always
If we somehow wound up with Harbaugh, that would be a home run hire.

He'd be a great coach and he wouldn't let Mack meddle.

Win-Win

I think he would do well, but I also feel like a Texas can do better than hiring the Head Coach of Baylor.

i think they should let it be known that any body mack contacts on his own or any capacity is automatically eliminated from future consideration. i can see mack saying you got the job because of me, so let me occupy a lot of your time and i will show you how to run your program

I guess I could handle Briles if there was a great D coord hired with him.

He sounds like he is a dirtier coach than Saban, so I don't get the love from Mack if that is true.

I like to have Meyers, Jimbo turn us down first then Briles would be ok with a great dc

Not sure why some are looking down their noses at Briles (especially "because he's from Baylor "). He too Baylor from a team likely to be pushed out of the Big 12 in realignment to the conference champion in one recruiting cycle. Pretty amazing.

The guy has own everywhere he has been, and not even Mack knows Texas high schools better.

If you have personal dislikes for him, well OK. But on paper he's more of a sure thing for Texas than Harbaugh or even Saban. There's no guarantee either of them could navigate the politics here either. Neither are any more congenial than Briles.

Briles isn't sexy, but neither is my Silverado. It just gets it done though.

Do not want.....But for selfish reasons, eldest son is a Baylor grad and third yr seminary student @ Truett on the Baylor campus. Plus a strong Baylor makes for a better Big12.

No, not really. He's got 2 conference championships in 10 years of coaching. He's a Mack Brown starter kit (but without the extraordinary recruiting ability)

mack testing the waters with briles is great - would love to have the guy. but, imo this should proceed with extreme caution. if a saban type firestorm of speculation starts and then he turns us down, recruiting could get ugly (uglier) for us in the state. BU boneheads would like nothing more than to tell everyone and their mothers that briles turned texas down.

how texas can exercise caution (maintain confidentiality) in this day and age, while gauging true interest, I have no idea. It would seem almost impossible.

He turned around UH and won a conf title within 4 years. He took over a bad, bad Baylor program and had them winning 10 games within 4 years a conf title in 6. And he won 4 State titles at Stephenville.

It is pretty hard to argue with Briles' success at a small school, long-term loser like Baylor. Get a great DC and off we go. Lots of other good choices of course, but Briles would be in that group. Don't just focus on "the one." There are lots of winning possibilities. But, of course, time will tell no matter who we get.

Very interesting that Briles would even meet with Mack given the amount of distrust and vitriol between the two...

With all the people that were glued to flight aware last week, how did no one catch Mack's flight stopping off in Waco? Seems a little strange.

you guys are too quick to be negative. Briles would be GREAT!
I don't dislike Briles. I wanted to be sure no one thought he was the second best coach in America.
