New Braunfels made it.

#10 – Frankfort High Hot Dogs
Frankfort, Indiana
Do their players celebrate a lot? Is there a hot dog manufacturing plant in the town? Did their previous mascot, a bulldog, catch fire in a tragic accident? Like hot dogs themselves, it’s probably a mix of everything.

#9 – Hoopeston Area Cornjerkers
Hoopeston, Illinois
It’s surprising this school even has sports teams. Most teenage boys would choose to stay home jerking their corn over playing a sport.

#8 – Belfry Bats
Belfry, Montana
Belfry is a town of 219 people with 27 high school students. So it has one of the coolest team names in America and is Montana’s biggest city.

#7 – Tarpon Springs Spongers
Tarpon Springs, Florida
Their sports teams may not be great, but they probably have one of the lowest teen pregnancy rates in all the land! Good job, Spongers!

#6 – New Braunfels High Unicorns
New Braunfels, Texas
Not scary? You’re so wrong. You’d be super scared if you saw a unicorn, because they’re not real. Plus, just try to tackle a unicorn. No padding would prevent that beautiful, spirally horn from ripping right through you.
The only problem here is that this team is in Texas. If a real unicorn was spotted in Texas, it would be immediately shot and grilled.

#5 – Watersmeet Nimrods

Watersmeet, Michigan
You think “nimrod†is a name for a moron? Ha! No. Nimrod means “skillful hunter.†You would know that if you weren’t some kind of nimrod. I mean, moron.

#4 – Millennium Falcons
Tracy, California
Having a logo with a Millennium Falcon from Star Wars in it would be much cooler. But most high school athletic programs don’t make enough money to fight multimillion dollar lawsuits from George Lucas.

#3 – Poca Dots
Poca, West Virginia
This is a perfect team name for any teenager.
“What are those all over your face? Zits?â€
“Nah, man. Dots. Team pride.â€

#2 – Man High Hillbillies
Man, West Virginia
Not only are they called the Hillbillies, but the school’s address is One Hillbilly Circle. Really. People rip West Virginia for not having a lot going for it. But they definitely have self-awareness.

#1 – Yuma High Criminals
Yuma, California
Fun Fact: That team of prisoners that beat the crap out the guards in “The Longest Yard All former Yuma High players.

Calhoun Sandcrabs ---- Where I am from....
When I was playing baseball at Corpus Christi Moody, the Sandcrabs were in our district. The school was Port Lavaca HS then. Baseball was NOT their sport. Playing at Cabaniss Field usually involved an afternoon game, followed by a night game. We had played an afternoon game, and Port Lavaca played Corpus Christi King HS, which was the defending state champs in the night game. When I heard that Burt Hooton was pitching for King, I decided to stay and watch. Hooton pitched the most incredible game I have ever seen in my life. Port Lavaca had no base runners and they suffered 18 Ks. Not a single Sandcrab hitter got even two called balls. Out of the three outs they got other than strikeouts, two were foul pop-ups and one was an infield grounder. I'll never forget that night.

Haha...yes, we were never known for excelling in baseball or any sports until recently.

Our football team made it to 4A state semi's last season.  We are now in a new district, playing teams outside of Houston instead of CC.  IMO, much tougher.  It'll be a good test for the Sandcrabs.

This certainly doesn't qualify as "best" mascot names, but my kids' HS up here are the Papermakers.

Georgia Pacific Paper Mill is what this town was built around many moons ago.  They're a huge supporter of the school district.

Here's the mascot, Mean Machine.  Laugh away; I did when I first saw it.

The port lavaca sand crabs have long been a favorite of mine. . .

Ours was unique. . .the Randolph Ro-Hawks. . .

Frisco was home to the 'Coons until about 6 years ago when the PC police had it 'expanded" to Racoons. .  .and yes, the mascot was always a racoon. . .

true story--

sand crabs have long been one of my favorite critters.  the love affair began in the early 70's when i was a poor as a church mouse grad student at the marine science institute in port aransas.

one of the zoology professors on the austin campus, george bittner, used sand crabs in some of his research projects, so he thought it would be bright idea to hire some of us to round him up a few sandcrabs which we were pleased to do, since he was paying us a buck apiece.  he thought he was going to get a dozen or so.

wrong.  several of us went out one evening in one of the guy's jeep and gallon jug of Gallo's finest on the great sandcrab hunt.

our strategy was to hang off the sides of the jeep which would slowly meander down the beach and when the lights would pick up the eyes of likely candidate, we'd hop off, run around behind the sandcrab, sneak up and grab him from behind while his eyes were mesmerized by the jeep's lights and before he could dive back into his hole.

early on, we had a pretty good success rate, but as the wine level decreased in the jug, the effectivity level of the capture method decreased proportionately.

well, we drained that bottle, and at least one more, and weaved our way all the way down to the land cut and back, capturing a  couple hundred research subjects which we had incarcerated in a cardboard box.

when we finally got back to the lab around midnight, we put the box in the kitchen area of the girls dorm, which at the time was hosting a visiting class of coeds from Texas Tech who were there on a field trip.

the kitchen area was separated from the dormitory by a locked door, so the ladies were somewhat protected from drunken grad students.but unfortunately the door had a large crack at the bottom of it so there was about an inch of space between the door and the floor.

somehow, during the night, and i swear i don't know how, that box turned over and the sandcrabs made a bee line for the crack under the door, where they invaded shoes, knapsacks and duffle bags of all sorts.

the screaming commenced about dawn.

i saw Hooton throw one of his no no's at Texas.  Also got to see Street's 7 inning perfect game at Tech.  Hooton may be the best player Texas has ever had although one pitcher who never seems to get his full due is Jim Gideon.

Post, Texas . . . home of the Post Antelopes. Town named for C.W. Post, the cereal giant.

Too bad it wasn't Post High School, home of the Fightin Post Toasties!
