Burger: - Schroeder's Place in Thorndale, Texas (before the old man passed).

Chicken Fried Steak: - The 290 Cafe in Manor before it went hipster

Steak - Had a Porterhouse at Saltgrass Steakhouse in Round Rock around May 2, 2003. It was outstanding. Just a lucky day for them.

Beer: - Fireman's #4

Mexican: - Place in Taylor that closed down called Toto's. The ritas were on another planet and the food was fantastic.

Breakfast Taco: - Chorizo, Potato, and Cheese from Juan in a Million in Austin

Wildcard: - Went with the gf and her family to Corino's in Round Rock. My daughter got a 1/2 lb burger with mayo, lettuce, tomato, and jalapenos. It was topped with crispy pepperoni and gorgonzola cheese. Was outstanding.

jerk chicken- along the roadside in Grand Cayman stopped with some caybrew and joined in with some locals on a porch.

chicken and waffles with crystals hot sauce syrup- Emrils, New Orleans

being in Houston I am fortunate to eat an excellent meal whenever we step out... but these 3 dishes were not common and can not be duplicated or matched, imo.

The BEST thing I've ever eaten anywhere is at a little dive in San Leon, Texas called Gilhooye's. It's the Oak Grilled Oysters with a Shrimp on top, then topped with Pico de Gallo and Mexican White Cheese. Good gosh they're great.

Not sure if you've been in a while but Gilhooley's has fallen way, way off, imo.

Actually this is just way too hard. Most of the best things I've ever had I've had at people's homes. I think I'm lucky to know some imaginative and adventurous moonlighter chefs as friends.

Here recently I had a smoked bacon ravioli at The Reef in Houston that I would highly recommend. Wasn't the best thing I've ever had but a recent highlight.

BBQ .. in a river bottom, on Elm Fork of Trinity river..cooked over bedsprings

Seafood..with my late brother in Houston..we caught em and cooked em

Chicken Fried Steak..my grandmother, on a wood stove and in a cast iron skillet

Breakfast..Mecca Cafe..on Harry Hines before they moved to East Dallas

Steak..on a mountain in Germany, during a tour. Cooked over a fire and we were freezing..probably not gourmet, but man it was good.

Fast Food..Steffi's Drive In..McKinney TX..been gone for years, but my mind remembers.

Something Different..my other grandmothers German potato pancakes and fresh churned butter

Chili..mine..called "Uncle Tom's Napalm." Once owned a bar and seved it..women came in ordered it and then her mouth blew up..Asked why the Napal chili was so hot?

Re: Steffi's - There was a place down here in Round Rock called 2J's that made great burgers. Was gone back in the late 80's

If you've never been to Enchiladas y Mas in Austin, you're missing out. Bes t steak = a wagyu ribeye off my own pit. Bought at central market for $35/lb. if you like steak and have never had it, you need to go get it. I plan to get to Japan at some point just to get a taste of the real thing (real Japanese wagyu makes American prime look like a turd).
