Steve's quotes --

"We don’t plan on making any changes. He's the conference coach of the year. "

I think everybody feels like we made a great turnaround this year."

7seed does not get an easy opponent. Especially for this team playing outside Austin. Likelihood of this team finishing on a 5-7 slide is increasing.

This is the original question posed for this thread back on Feb 24.

Are we starting our "annual slide" now?

How/why do we get so sloppy and disengaged at the end of the season year after year. I think Barnes has done a good job of showing the basketball world what can be done at Texas, I just don't think he is the guy to get us to that next level. Under Barnes this is what we are and what we always will be. A team with promise that ends up a one and done. I'm ready for the next step

Barnes is Mack Brown, but he always gets a pass? Great recruiter, often out-coached badly.

Holmes announced he is coming back

http://www.statesman.com/weblogs/bevo-beat/2014/mar/19/texas-jonathan-holmes-will-stay-senior-season-skip/

MILWAUKEE — Texas junior Jonathan Holmes truly believes the Longhorns are on the verge of becoming a championship program again. He doesn’t want to miss a minute of it.
Holmes, Texas’ only upperclassman and the team’s leading scorer, said he will return for his senior season and not jump into the NBA draft.

“First of all, I don’t feel I’m anywhere as good as I need to be or could be,” Holmes told the American-Statesman. “Just what we have going right now, this year could be a special year. I think looking forward, we could make it even more special, if that’s possible. But right now, everyone’s mind is focused on the (NCAA) tournament.”

Holmes is averaging 13 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. He’s a quiet assuming leader, one who will speak up when necessary.

I absolutely cannot stand basketball posts other than those written by Dustin McComas.

you do not listen to the players, and you do not give credit where credit is due. you are like a bunch of vultures waiting for validation of your premise. how many of you would have bet $ on 23-9 and making the NCAA tournament at the start of the season? is Barnes responsible for Felix's streaky shooting or for Taylor's slump. the players bought in totally, and look what happened.

this is just one more bandwagon group. a dismissive "another one and done" post is so typical of the smug attitude I absolutely hate. you have no clue.

time to move on. you entitled "fans" are not going to change, even with totally unexpected success. that disgusts me. win it all or the season is a failure.

hook 'em.

If I recall, our RPI to start the season was between 75 and 100. From this, we should be in the NIT. With the number of freshmen and transfers, I thought we would be horrible. Barnes deserves credit for turning it around.

I believe next year is a different story. More will be expected with one year of player development for the young pups and hopefully Myles Turner. Barnes needs to get to Sweet 16, or even Elite 8 (with Turner), next year.

is Barnes responsible for Felix's streaky shooting or for Taylor's slump. .....
Yes, he is responsible for giving the worst shooter on the team the only green light to shoot at any time.

And for having a team which employed the logic of having its worst shooter take the most shots.

Felix had 369 attempts (over 100 more shots than Holmes) on 35.8% made (tied with Croaker for worst on the team but Croaker barely took 100 shoots on the entire season).

Felix also took the most 3P attempts (171!). Over twice as many as anyone else on the team. Yet, he had the worst 3P% of anyone on the team t 33.3%. (Taylor was actually worst, but was smart enough to take only 18 3Ps on the entire season).

The best FG%s were Cam (55%) and Holmes (51.2%). Ibeh should have been higher than Holmes but he wasn't.

On 3P%, it was Yancy leading at 37.5% and then Homes at 35.4%. Neither of which is great, but looks better when compared to Felix.

Basically Barnes has recruited an entire team of poor shooters. The guards are pretty close to horrible as outside shooters (although I admit I do hold out some hope for Walker and/or Holland turning into scorers in the future). But it is not just them, even the big mens' shooting is not where it should be.

If you had to state what our offensive philosophy is, could you? If so, what is it?

What is our offensive plan to win games?

What do we do best on offense? What is our "offensive calling card?"

Another 1 and done.
maybe, but oddly pessimistic since we're actually a slight favorite.
hell....NIT sounded good preseason. if someone had offerred me 'one-and-done' in the ncaa back in october, i'd have jumped at it. should that be the ultimate goal of UT hoops? of course not. but for this team, this year if that's the outcome i won't bemoan it as failure.

Agree. If Mack Brown deserved to be fired, then so be the same treatment for Barnes.

Except ... that is just not what is going to happen. Even if we lose tonight, Barnes was the Big 12 coach of the year. He will at least be back next year with a very young team that exceeded all expectations this year. His entire roster will be back. They have an amazing sense of cohesion as a team - especially compared to the recent past. We have a very important piece of the puzzle coming next year in 6'-7" stretch small forward Jordan Barnett, and according to those who seem to be in the know, we have a very good chance of landing Myles Turner. We are going to be pretty good next year even without Turner. With him, we will be gosh awful good. Coach Barnes is just like most coaches - he has his strengths and weaknesses, but to equate his situation to Mack Brown's situation ... well, to put it politely ... let's just say that, it does not pass the smell test. Frankly, It amazes me that we are still having this conversation. It smacks of a lack of understanding of the facts and how the real world works. Coach Barnes may or may not be the future of Texas basketball, but statements like this whither in the face of a statement of a Texas great from the football side, since you made the comparison, “There’s an old saying: You dance with who brung ya.â€

Well...you have your opinion and i have mine....each to his own as they say. I simply don't care to argue because it doesn't matter that much to me. Nonetheless, you're wrong.

I just got my dander up for the game tonight. As they say in France, "Touchy! Toot ce boner! Mercy buttercups!" And, that's all I have to say about that. ;)

Great post:). You're my kind of guy. Go Horns!!
If we win, we can have the conversation all over again! ;)

If we lose ... well, I will be in mourning for a day or two ... and then, back to the music thread! ;)

You seem like a very nice guy, but your logic is basically non-existent in this post. No offense.
