Barnes

I know there's some Barnes haters, but this is well deserved IMO. Has one of the youngest teams in the country and has a completely different roster other than maybe a couple players. Finishing 3rd in the best conference is quite an achievement.

Congrats to Coach!

In the first half of conference play, Texas only had 4 road games. Those 4 games were against teams that finished in the bottom of the Big 12. Rather than "Barnes' annual slide", I think what you're seeing is the team normalizing. They likely weren't as good as fans thought after those 9 games, just like they aren't as bad as many think after these last 9.

I also want to know how Barnes and the team got the "Annual Slide" label? In 2009, it's understandable. Not in '10, '11 or '12 though? Certainly the team did not meet expectations in either of the last 2 years, but they were consistently bad (as opposed to a swoon in the 2nd half of the season).

Barnes has been in Austin for 16 years.

He had a terrific original 7-year span that included two Sweet 16 trips, two Elite 8 exits, and one Final Four.

But since 2008, the Longhorns have underachieved despite having plenty of NBA talent (six 1st round picks).

2009 – 7 seed, lost in 2nd round to Duke

2010 – 8 seed, lost in 1st round to Wake Forest [Horns had 2 1st round picks - Bradley, James]

2011 – 4 seed, lost in the 2nd round to Arizona [Horns had 3 1st round picks - Thompson, Hamilton & Joseph]

2012 – 11 seed, lost in the 1st round to Cincinnati

2013 – missed the NCAA tournament

Barnes is 2-4 in the NCAA tournament over that period with teams that had 5 first round NBA picks.

Partially in response, recruiting has fallen off in the last few classes.

He’s one of the 10 highest paid coaches in the country now.

Is UT getting its moneys worth?.

2009-10 -- after starting 17-0, lost 10 of last 17 to slide to a finish of 24-10 (losing in Round 1)

2010-11 -- after starting 23-3, lost 5 of last 10 to slide to a finish of 28-8 (losing in Round 2)

2011-12 -- after starting 12-4, lost 10 of last 18, to slide to a finish of 20-14 (losing in Round 1)

2012-13 -- lost 13 of last 21 to "slide" to a finish of 16-18, (lost 1st round of the CBI to UH)

2013-14 -- incomplete -- started 20-5, then lost 4 of last 6 to slide to 22-9 heading into the Big 12 Tourney

I remember a few years back, around 2010 or so...it was the year Texas played North Carolina at Cowboys Stadium and just destroyed them. Didn't Texas make it to being ranked #1, for like the only time in program history? And then the team absolutely fell to pieces and didn't do jack in the NCAAs. I haven't been much of a Barnes fan since that season. To be great enough to ascend to #1 ranking, then just down the toilet that team went.

It was 2009-10 (see above) that we started out 17-0, dropping over 100 pts on UNC. We scored over 100 three times that season.

But we then lost in the 1st R to Wake Forest by 1 pt. in OT to finish 24-10.

Abe Lemons had a pretty spectacular collapse one season, after Mike Wacker got hurt. But I think 2009-10 was probably worse, given the circumstances.

The collapse under Lemons occurred in the 1981-1982 season. Texas started 16-0, ranked 5th in the country and was rolling with LaSalle Thompson and Mike Wacker. Then Wacker tore his ACL and he and his 16 points/9 rebounds per game average were gone for the season. I'm thinking Texas didn't win another game ALL SEASON...1 or 2 at most. Lemons was fired at the end of that season, an unfortunate ending for one of the more popular coaches ever at UT, in any sport.

I guess that is one of the issues.

In 15 seasons, Barnes has won the Big 12 Title outright once (way back in 1999). He has been co-champion twice more.

(This season, we finished 3rd).

Barnes has never won the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

Kansas, meanwhile, has won all or part of 12 of the last 13 Big 12 Titles, including the last 10 in a row.

Which gets back to the top-10-in-America salary.

This was through last season only (cost per win)
