Not saying he should be #1 on the list to contact but the more I think about it I think the next coach could be Art Briles. Forget his extension or some notion Baylor is his baby - I think he would crawl to Austin for the right offer. At this stage of his career I dont think its something he could/would turn down if was seriously offered to him. He would tear could tear shit up here. The arguments for him pretty much outweigh anyone else the more I think about it

1) He may be the best option taking everything into account that could be obtained outside Harbaugh or Saban. Several insiders say he has recently reached out to Texas

2) He knows Texas and Texas recruiting like the back of his hand. He's well versed in all Texas high schools and all the coaches know him. He could recruit like a madman at Texas

3) Runs a system that fits best in the big 12 and to attract Texas high school talent (as well as national)

4) Is tough and hard nosed. Would change culture here as he's not a Mack type. If you watch clips of him at practice he's extremely involved and demanding

5) Has enough "Texas" to him and Southern talk to fit the mold of a Texas coach to the media (for whatever value that is). Prob wouldnt schmooze as much as Mack, but wouldnt need too. I think his presence on the LHN would be good enough as no matter who the next coach is will have a much reduced role than Mack did (who thought it was too much)

Briles + a big time DC could do some serious damage at Texas IMO. Forget Baylor being his dream school. He's not during down a fat contract and the opportunities Texas would offer him at this stage of his career IMO

i agree ive said all along make briles say no...his qb evaluations alone are worth it to me..his style is perfect for the big12 and hes a awsome recruiter.he would kill it here at texas..

I would be happy with Briles. I have no idea how realistic or unrealistic he is, but I think the decision makers absolutely have to make that call to gauge his interest.

and dont give me this we wouldnt hire a Baylor Coach to run our program...Art is a great coach who would have UT back in the top ten in two years..mite not be the best longterm but for the next 5-6 years he would be awsome..im still saying its franklin or strong and id be ok with that too..

A lot of people have said he is a grade a jerk. Personally I know nothing about him other than watching him turn Baylor around and what is shown on espn and fox which all is fairly positive

Does anyone know him, how difficult is he to get along with?

There are rumors he hates texas, are they true?

Would he leave a place where he helped build a new stadium and helped bring their program back from the dead?

Are there better options?

Dont know about him being a jerk or hating Texas, but he can be an ass at times.

So is Saban though. He's often a grade a dick.

Im also not sure about his buyout. Ive never seen any legit confirmation of what it is. The rumors are all over the place

If the mentions of Briles reaching out to Texas recently are true I would think there has to be some obvious interest there. He already has an extension - he wouldn't be doing so for the purpose of getting a new deal or a raise

I dont care about him building Baylor or some notion he would stay because of the new stadium etc. Baylor will never be Texas or offer him the chances to take his career to the very top before. He's not old, but he's not a young coach starting out either. An opportunity like this for him where he can still recruit and coach in Texas with the best job in the country doesnt come around very often

Briles would be a huge hire. I got so cuaght up in the excitement of Saban that I just quit thinking about Briles who I think would be my #1A to Malzahn at this point. Maybe just #1 since he can recruit Texas and actually develop players.

there a pipedream options...saban,harbaugh,tomlin,meyer,shaw and there are realistic ones,briles,strong,franklin,muschamp,....i just wonder who is the mystery guy that mayb patterson has his eye on that we dont..thats who always seems to get the job..

I agree with Brasky, I've got so caught up in Saban that I forgot how high Briles was on my list. Seems be fell to backburner after his loss to OSU. I'd love to have him come I and get some big time DC...

It's not that he's a jerk...he's just VERY narrowly focused on his job and the success of his program. If you're not helping him than you are distracting him from his goals.

I have had many interactions with him and he's a good guy. I would love to have him at Texas. Imagine what he could do developmentally when he has his choice of QBs from the entire country.

When Sumlin was shopping (for a new job or a raise, you decide), Briles' name was on the short list.

Dizz,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I know there was a decent faction on Orangebloods against Briles and thought you were among them? I know there have been quite a few that have come around or changed their minds though.

Briles isn't a jerk - he's a tough coach who's players are very loyal to him (see the numerous anti-TCU/Gary P tweets after the TCU game). I see what he's doing at Baylor, the amount of freedom he has (no network or BMDs breathing down his neck), and I can't imagine a scenario where he'd leave. He could have held off on signing a 10-yr extension until after the bowl games in order to see what happened with MB. But he didn't - he signed on for 10 more years in the middle of Baylor's toughest part of the season. To me, that sounds like a guy content and focused on his job, not looking for a new one.

I also suspect that Baylor included some hefty buyout penalties in the contract - after all, they gave him an extension last year, so to offer another one, for a 10 year term, shows the university knew he'd end up on lists like this.

Yeah I havent thought in the past he should be a top choice, but was one of the ones arguing during the year though Baylor was legit however.

The more I've thought about Briles though and thought about what he could do at Texas I've come more around on him being a top 5 choice

I'll take Briles in a beartbeat

I think it's time for Texas to start having a chip on its shoulder...no more Mr. Nice Guy...Briles would bring that to this program...his arrogance would play well at Texas since most of us feel that way! Saturdays are for winning football games not family picnics!
