The evidence is starting to mount. This season two of the three major winners have used a belly putter. The last winner was Ernie Els who won the British Open over the past weekend. When Big Ernie was asked about the belly putter and specifically the locking of the putter by placing the top of the putter in your belly he has this to say.

"As long as it's legal, I'll keep cheating like the rest of them,"

The furor caused by the long putter are not about the length but the locking and Tiger Woods among many others have stated that they should be outlawed.

In the last few days the R & A says they will get with the USGA and come to some kind of a conclusion. Not in years but in a few months. There is precident for this as they already limit the size of the head on a driver and in the last few years they got together and outlawed square grooves on irons.

Will it happen? This will be interesting.

I guess it depends on how big of a gut you have. The bigger the gut the bigger the locking advantage. I don't know how they can ban belly putters when they allow short ones and they allow long ones. Can they ban in between? Naah.

I need to upgrade. Last time I played golf my partners made fun of my two-way chipper, my ball retriever and my alien sand wedge. Said all of them belonged in the Smithsonian.

R & A says no decisions have been made but my guess is they will allow any length putter but won't allow it to be anchored. Same way they outlawed standing sideways and using the long putter as a pendulum. Remember when the really long putter came out they were called pendulum putters.

I used to use a belly putter I got from a guy at Trade Days in Canton that makes putters. Best putter I've ever had.

Won a new top of the line putter in a scramble and gave my belly away.

Regret it to this day.
