ANYTHING SPRING FOOTBALL!!

Anyone hearing any rumblings about another QB available or could become so? Just hearing no options have been totally ruled out at this moment.

Swoopes doesn't have a slow release if you give him quick passing routes (like Gilbert's offense does).

Unless Heard has shown the ability to grasp the playbook (which could happen because it's simplified) the starting QB is gonna be Swoopes or a grad transfer.

Mike Finger is 100% right. Gilbert's offense is all a mental game, not actually about release. The decision on where you are going normally comes pre-snap. Swoopes is way ahead mentally than anyone we have on campus right now.

Hey, I hope Finger is right.

I haven't seen anything in 3 years to be optimistic about Swoopes at QB, but maybe he's finally turned the corner. I'll believe it when I see it during live scrimmages or games. Fingers crossed (pun intended) and horns up!  \m/

Guys, y'all know a lot more about football than I do. That's a given. However, I do know a little about athletes, and Swoopes hesitates, overthinks, and second guesses. Remember all of those delay of game penalties or timeouts? Swoopes. Remember the deer in the headlights look? Swoopes. That doesn't typically change.

I believe he's bright. I know he's articulate and polite, but I don't think he processes quickly under stress. Some rise to the occasion, and others don't. I'm in the show me category. Buechele may very well be the best option. With a good line, and without qb runs (why would we need them with our hosses), there is no reason to think he can't get it done. I've never seen a more fragile looking qb than Goff last year.

Just my two cents.

Just because we're critical of Swoopes QB play doesn't mean we dislike him personally.

I'm not that emotionally invested in any one player on this team. The facts and stats speak for themselves - UT ranked 117th in passing offense last season. Can we improve with a better offensive line and a superior running game? Absolutely, but IMO we can't be one-dimensional in this league. Not if we wanna compete for a Big12 title.

I tend to believe that part of why Swoopes hesitates, overthinks, and second guesses and why Heard tended to hold the ball and actually regressed as a QB was because they had their "confidence" coached out of them. In other words, they were coached to "not make a mistake". What I read about Gilbert makes me believe that he will coach them to "make plays" and to play with confidence. The difference is huge.

For those of you who are familiar with golf it's like when I'm putting for birdie. I make more of them when I try to make it instead of when I'm try not to 3-putt.

I strongly disagree that Swoopes was the cause of the delay of game penalties last year.I think between Norvill, Watson and Wickline, the plays were so slow coming in that Bart Starr could not have looked smooth. The offense was so damned disfunctional nobody could run it. Heard and Swoopes can take plenty of blame for bad play and bad choices, turnovers and all that, but we were a mess offensively from the top on down

What about the year before? btw, we didn't have that number with Heard, and definitely not with Ash.

Its still early, I am not going to give up hope yet. but just to be on the safe side, here's hoping for a top 5 defense

I seem to remember the offense being just as disorganized when Heard was in, and just as many Delay of game or timeout calls to prevent them when Heard was in there. Ash?....did you say Ash?...He played, what, ? 30 minutes? Too many cooks in the kitchen. We were completely lost last year no matter who was under center.

Per Burton

Which QB looked the best? None of them looked anything more than average. Swoopes just continues to fail when the pocket closes in on him. Heard simply doesn't have the arm strength and vision. And Buechele is as small or smaller than Colt McCoy was as a true freshman.

Locksley surely isn't the answer. Merrick got very few reps.

Right now, Texas still doesn't have a quarterback.
The good news is that Texas doesn't need one until the end of August.

So now the excuse will be "new system" ?  New system or not Swoopes has not shown the mental ability to make good decisions when the pass rush closes in. He also turns the ball over way too much. We have 3 years of evidence that Swoopes is not a plus player at QB. I also have no doubt he will be the starter because he is the best of the worst. Strong better hope Swoopes does something this year he has not shown in 3 years because if not Strong will be gone come December 2016.
It's just too darn bad that players are not allowed to improve from one season to the next.

According to what Coach Strong said during his pre-Spring Practice PC, Gilbert should know which QB he wants to go with pretty quickly. My guess is he's hoping to pick one during Spring Break as there will be no practices and that will give him time to evaluate and make a decision with all the film and other coaches' inputs.

I don't think this necessarily means that whoever he picks in March (or April) will be the September 3rd starter - that guy will still be evaluated during Fall Camp.

I've seen it happen dozens of times over the past 50+ years of watching Longhorn football. Colt McCoy comes to mind.

LMAO. Swoopes cannot carry the water bottle for McCoy.

1. Heard does not have the arm strength or accuracy to make the throws needed in a Gilbert offense. Heard is a great athlete and a gamer but as many have reported he does not take the offseason or practice serious. Not a good trait to have for the most important position on the field.

2. Swoopes always looks like the best player on the field during practice. Physical tools is not the problem with Swoopes. It's all mental. He gets nervous in the pocket, panics under pressure. Until I see it in a big time game I will not have any confidence in him leading this team

3. Buechelle: I love his game. The problem he needs time to learn and develop. He has a great arm but he needs a RS year to gain more weight and body strength. ( I'm afraid he will have to play this year)

4. Locksley will probably never play a down at QB per many who know more than me.
