One of the greatest joys of my life was to be a fan of the old Dallas Blackhawks. They moved to Dallas in 1967 and played their games in the old Ice Arena at Fair park. They had a bitter rivalry against the Ft Worth Texans.
Dallas was pretty good and won (4) Adams cups, but their claim to fame was Jim McNaughton and Charlie the Chicken. Jim would show up with this cane fishing pole with a rubber chicken(Charlie) attached to the pole by a rubber band. He would dangle it over the ice and torment opposing teams.
They also had a 10 cent beer night three or four times a year and always against the Ft Worth team. Oh, there were a few fights but you see that in the stands now. Mainly it was a good time for not a lot of money. Something today's entertainment of all types has forgotten.
One such night occurred in 1983, their last year of existence. They were playing the Texans and Jim was having a go with Charlie. The Texan players were incensed and went into the stands after Charlie. One of them got a hold of Charlie the Chicken and they all went to the rink. Jim suffered a few shots but managed to hold his own and only suffered a bruised lip.
I will never forget the Ft Worth players celebrating with their prize. All those years of being tormented and now they got to "Skate the Chicken." So poo poo away at those times but I could go see a great hockey game, drink 10 cent beer and pay next to nothing to get in.
Can you say that?
