I have a friend who can’t be named, so I will for the sake of this post call him Jim. Jim has had a lot of dealings in the Dallas area and is connected to one local owner of a pro sports franchise. He is friends with one of the top Sports Agents in the country. He shared a conversation he had with this agent over the weekend.
First the agent, that I can’t name, has clients all over the spectrum. universities, every major sport and has several Dallas Cowboys players as clients.
Jim had dinner with the agent and their wives. After the dinner, the agent shared some tidbits about coaching searches. (He has (4) Division I head coaches as clients) He laughed when Jim mentioned the sources on the Texas head coaching search, because he told Jim he would bet any amount that Doug cared to lose, the vast majority were started by the prospective head coaches own agent.
His words were to the effect that it is never a bad idea to have your client linked to a plum coaching job. It’s also why nearly every free agent player is linked to the Cowboys, Yankees, or the Mavericks. It’s good for current coaches looking for an extension, and it’s never a bad time to remind your present employer that you have options.
Later when the time is right and enough has been milked out of the sourced rumor, the client can proclaim their love for wherever they are and take themselves out of consideration. He said it works and the person they leak the source to(through a third party) never knows the wiser.
Just remember this when you see another source linking this coach to a school. It was quite likely it was made up by his agent?
The he said something interesting. He said interviews are a whole other animal.
