The record of Nick Saben and Bobby Stoops their first year on the job. It's not going to be pretty, in fact it might be ugly...possibly fugly, but you know what it will get better. I absolutely hated the conservative nature of the offense, but I liked what a saw from the young QB. I believe things are going to improve each week. I am not sure what they will mean in wins and losses, but remember Saben loss to Louisiana Monroe...I'm not sunshine pumping, whatever the hell that means, I am being realistic. This team is lacking talent and changing directions.

I don't think most people really understand how patchwork our team is because Mack was so effective spinning things.  Wasn't this Ash's third offense in 4 years?  Mack had 3 different defensive coordinators in 3 years, so there was no cohesive defensive plan in place, either.

The gaps must be enormous.

i've opined, to some ridicule, that despite Rivals rankings our talent just wasn't that good. The NFL agreed with me last spring and from the eye-ball test so far this year, ask yourself how many of our guys would start on a top-5 team.

i support charlie. he wasn't left a full cupboard.

but getting blown out at home by unranked teams will get old real damn fast.

Agree, DHJ, we gotta' have patience.

I don't believe that Strong will let Rivals.com determine which recruits he will go after.  IMHO, he will recruit players who fit the Longhorn mold as he envisions it, regardless of a player's star rating.

He will make the best of what he has now, but look for a different team make-up in the near future.

Cedric Reed, Malcom Brown, and Jordan Hicks come to mind.

Nobody on offense - not even our much ballyhooed (and overrated IMO) RBs.

agreed. more of a rhetorical question about our overall lack of talent.

and throw in Q Diggs too. that was a grown man's INT last night.

Great post! Exactly what I have been talking about.

Art Briles wasn't immediately successful. Neither was Frank Beamer or Bobby Bowden. Football is a process sport. It takes time. Charlie Strong knows how to build successful teams and he will do that but there will be growing pains.

Tough to beat many decent teams with a patchwork OL and QB who's had a handful of snaps in D-1.

But Charlie's post-game PC didn't emphasize offense....and that scheme played right into BYU's hands. And any attempt to open up and stretch the defense downfield rarely happened. If that type offensive approach is Charlie's main goal, (and why he brought in Watson) then regardless of our talent, it's likely to make many upcoming Saturday games get old real dam fast.

Before you can have a successful running game, SOMEBODY has to open some sort of a hole for the RB to exploit. If you barely have a two-deep on the o-line, your running game is going to struggle, no matter how talented the running backs are. That is especially true if the defense knows you won't throw downfield. If you have depth issues with the o-line, you must keep the defense off-balance.
