5 Thoughts Following the Orange and White Game.

Shane is the starter end of story. If Strong rolls Swoopes out there against ND the coaching search might as well start then IMO.
That's why I believe Buchele will start even though he won't give the team the best chance at QB.
Swoopes will not start. Heard can still play. He was a redshirt freshman last year who showed flashes but who struggled at times. However, with two strong RBs, a read option offense gives the Longhorns the best chance to win. Heard is really good at that.

But you start Buchele and shows progress, it buys Strong another year. Buchele's strong performance forces Strong's hand here and Buchele will play next year.

The closest I can think of is Peter Gardier....He might not have started the year, but he is the only QB that to this day beat OU 4 times.

Regardless of how many games he starts, if Buechele finishes next year as the starter, it buys Charlie another year.

And that's with progress or no progress.

Swoopes should have been moved to TE for his senior year.  Then he might get a shot in the NFL.

He'll never get that shot as a qb.
Ty had no business being recruited to UT as a QB in the first place. That one's on Mack.

Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane, except in the 18-Wheeler package when he doesn't need to make pre-snap reads or go thru progressions like a real QB.

Shane is going to take his lumps, but the kid is the best thing we have seen since Colt!
while I, like many others, wanted one of our current QBs to take over this team this year and allow Shane to RS, finally getting us to a 'normal' QB progression, it looks like we will have to wait another year for that, but if all goes to plan, Sam will now be able to RS next year, putting some separation between the two

we're looking at these true freshman potential starters in game one after last season's freshman starters on both sides of the ball who not only played but played well.  add in the ones who took over starter snaps later in the season, and we're looking at a revolution here.

several things make this possible.

1) charlie strong and his staff aren't afraid to play a precocious kid, even before the ou game.  even in the first game!   yo, mack, somewhere doing god knows what these days.

2) the spread offenses - and particularly this one - are much easier to learn than offenses used to be.

3) the high school revolution - particularly on offense - is pretty astonishing.  youngsters come in to college programs much better prepared to play than in previous eras.

edit:

and one thing makes this necessary.  yo, mack, somewhere doing god knows what these days.

I think MB and GD tried to prove that it wasn't just VY or Colt and they thought they could plug in anyone and win.

We finally got to see with our own eyes what Buechele and Swoops can and/or will do in the new system and the difference was obvious.

For true freshman I was highly impressed with Buechele. But I also realize that what he faced in the spring game was not what he will face come next fall. It will be quite different.

Now in fairness to Heard, we have not seen what he can and/or will do in the new system. But he will certainly have to step up his game if he wants to be the starter.

So either Heard indeed steps up or we roll with Buechele. Kinda of a win-win situation based on what I saw Saturday.

Don't know about Fish at UT but Charlie has started one before. He plays in Minnesota now. Big 12 had RG3 and Jared Stidham at Baylor. Jared Goff, Matt Barkley, josh Rosen, but that's Cali it's different. Ohio State started one a while back. Coach Strong doesn't have a choice. I'm sure everyone would prefer a year for their QB to mature. I'd prefer not to send anything to Uncle Sam today but nobody asked what I wanted to do or would rather do. The kid has to grow up on the run. I think he will do just fine. He will have a good five in front of him, a terrific two behind him, and playmakers on both sides. I'm sticking with 8 plus wins this year

It is very clear that Buechele outperformed Swoopes in the Spring Game and has the edge in the QB competition.

I think Buechele starts from day one...that needs to happen to get him up to speed for conference play and OU.  It may make the ND game a throw away, but I will take a loss in game 1 if it means we are competitive in conference.

I really think the 18 wheeler package has a place in this offense.  It is a change of pace and it gets into the heads of the opponents.  Texas is a better team with that addition to the arsenal.  I prefer to think that Swoopes should be used to do what he can do and that will help the team...that is the 18 Wheeler package and as a backup QB.

And honestly, when I think of how good our defense can be...WOW.

welcome back everyone. been out for awhile, had to deal with a divorce. my observations from the spring game is that shane is our best answer, he is young and will make some dumb decisions but he seems to at least understand how to run this offense. The two running backs that we have will be the blood line of this offense but he at least shows the grit to stay in the pocket and throw down field.

It is always tough to tell what side is winning in a spring game since you are playing against your own teammates but i think its stafe to say that at least our secondary is going to be lethal. Kris Boyd seems to have really progressed from last season and hollywood is even more hollywood.

our defensive line shows alot of promise with Charles O and Vaser, im excited to see what the freshman bring.

I think that this offense will help our offensive line quite a bit due to the quick ball release that the offense comands and having a QB that is capible of making something out of nothing.

It was still a little frustrating to see it take our offense 4 downs to keep the drives alive since we wont have the same oppertunity during the season but then again i understand that the coaches are strickly looking to get as many looks at the playmakers we have.

If our Wideouts can clean up on the gitters and drops then we are going to be very dangerous, there were too many plays that could of been homeruns if they didnt drop the ball.

I do not think we will win against ND but i wont bet against our team. It will take a few games but i think we will be amazing by the end of season
