2024 Baseball Season Thread

Texas wins series taking today’s game 13~8. This is one of the few games I didn’t watch or go to.
Several thoughts, Starting Pitching that I thought was coming together really struggling. Looks like LBJ had another bad outing, Grubbs and Ace struggled some on Friday or Saturday.
This team needs starting pitching to turn a corner soon, that plus the hitting could carry this team. Time to step it up, despite all the issues team is 9~6 and 4th in conference.
Right now no way this team host a regional, need to string together some wins.
I was following the game on the internet and at one time it showed a final of 7-3 Houston so I closed it. Not until I got home last night did I see the Horns won 13-8.

I agree no way this team host a regional. I just hope we don't go to collie station cause aggy is good, real good, this year.

... Also swinging at 3-0 pitches with ducks on the pond.
That’s usually a bad decision by the head coach. Or the third base coach. Or one and the same.
...
Not necessarily. I always wanted my hitters aggressive and be ready to hit a good pitch. At 3-0, I tell them pick a spot. If it's there swing, if not take it. You know the pitchers got to throw a strike so why not take advantage. Even if a player's in a slump, that 3-0 pitch could be the one that gets him out of a slump.

I think the only time I would give the take sign is if the bases are loaded with 2 outs and the tying run is at 3rd.

Just pray we make a regional...

Longhorn baseball has always been about great pitching. This is the worst pitching staff in at least 25 years. Our 4.80 ERA is the highest since at least 1999 which is as far back as I looked. Not only is it the highest ERA, it is the highest by a lot. Only other year over 4.30 was in 2008 at 4.48.

Now why is that happening? Pierce is the pitching coach. He fired Sean Allen who was great here in my opinion and then immediately fired Woody Williams after a bad pitching year last year. Pierce is the only one to blame for the lack of developing arms.

LBJ regressed. Hurley regressed. Witt and Harrison hasn't bounced back from injury. Relied on Howard a lot and he has been rough to watch. Not one dominant arm on the team. Not sure any of these guys would pitch much on that 2021 World Series team.
Pierce has definitely put himself in the spotlight with pitching and it hasn't gone well.

He is grasping at straws at this point to find something that works. Jared Thomas is getting the Tuesday start this week and Greg Swindell isn't a fan.

I’m with Greg. Pierce is very desperate. Maybe he shouldn’t have fired his last two pitching coaches. If this makes ANY sense, someone please explain.

I mean... No one else can pitch. Why not try him?

1. Desperate for any quality pitching
2. JT was a good pitcher in HS
3. It is UT-RGV, can likely do without JT in the field (and he may still bat, and play his position after throwing)

The biggest issue here is point #1.

Good points. I guess I will have to tune in tonight to see how it goes.

I can agree to a point but this is college. If you want to find a pitcher, you got to use the pitchers on your bench. Every inning helps them hone their pitches, especially the younger ones. You never know when the light comes on for them.

That is true. At this point in the year though, a lot of guys have had chances and there have not been many who have done so with much success.

The pitching this year there is no way of an assured strike. I hope the coach is making on when to rake or not.

Top of the 4th, 9-1 UTRGV and they have the bases loaded with 2 outs. 🤬

I saw a guy in the stands with a ski mask on. Guess he didn’t have a brown paper bag.

15-1 going to the bottom of the 6th. UTRGV has scored in every inning.

For those of you who think Pierce is a great coach, please send me the number of the person you buy your stuff from cause I need to smoke some of that!

So I have officially crossed over. Tonight is the first baseball game I ever left early. It took a long time to get to this point. I have never seen this team dominated by UTRG…. EVER, sorry forgive my ignorance.
