Ewers and it's not close. Ewers is being compared to Peyton Manning.
I just remember the hype around Simms as a prospect was unbelievable.  I remember he originally gave a verbal to Tennessee then flipped to Texas.  He was 6'4" or 6'5", 220, could make all the throws, accurate and was athletic.  He wasn't the runner Ewers is, but he was the son of a all-pro NFL QB and had all the upbringing you wanted in a college QB prospect.  There was a lot of hype surrounding him and that was before all of these recruiting services were out there, along with social media.

Not saying he was better than Ewers, just saying he was an elite QB prospect, like Ewers.  I do think Ewers has a better arm though.

You forget, Simms could throw it a country mile. It was one thing he had on Applewhite. Beautiful long ball.

I still think Simms was a good QB. You're right, he was elite coming out of HS. Son of a Super Bowl Champion.

He simply didn't have the moxie that Applewhite had. He folded in the big game against CU. But he did have his memorable plays and was a true Longhorn.

With Applewhite, you always knew you had a shot. That guy was a warrior.

With Ewers, you still have to wonder how much of it is the SLC scheme and how much of it is Ewers' talent. SLC has produced some great QBs, but also some duds (after HS). Either way, they won a ton of games no matter who the QB was. Ewers does have all the tools and certainly passes the eyeball test. A little awkward running the ball but so was Peyton Manning. His head is a full three sizes smaller than Manning's, too. lol

I'm not expert but I do not believe this for a second. Not even Herman is arrogant enough to believe he could get away with, let alone survive doing something like that. Seems a lot like more negative recruiting which admittedly, he has brought a lot of on himself.
Agreed

People have romanticized Applewhite a bit.  The way Applewhite ended his career with the near miraculous comeback and the bowl win wrote the story of his persecution by our coaching staff.  But anyone who saw Simms and Applewhite  practice would have looked for a reason to start Simms. He had everything you want in your QB (physically).

Also, right before being replaced (end of the previous  year) Applewhite had two terrible games:  Nebraska in the Championship game and Arkansas in the Alamo Bowl.  This with the #1 recruit in the nation as his backup.

Finally, Applewhite had this odd proclivity to throw the ball 3 yards to a WR running out of bounds, on 3rd and 7.

Applewhite was gritty, a leader and a very good QB... I’m just adding a little perspective to the narrative most people remember.

This ^ is my memory without the assistance of Google, lol I hope teams, timeline are accurate.

Thats pretty much how it went down.

I'll never forget when Applewhite hit McGarity for that 93 yd touchdown against OU. Applewhite raced down the field so he could get in a DB's face in the end zone. I said right there that guy's got balls. lol

Simms was the #1 QB in the nation.  I think “not close” is incorrect.... my opinion.
Agree. Every Texas fan loved it when he flipped from the other UT to the real UT. It was terrible the way some Texas fans treated him. They blamed him for the Applewhite/Simms controversy when the blame was all on Mack.

On a side note, don't forget that some Texas fans thought VY should have been moved to WR. So maybe we "fans" don't know everything after all? Except of course those on this board. ?

I don't know much about this kid. Is he the consolation prize since we're not getting Turner? Or is he legit and we landed another Casey Hampton?

So I went to see how this affected our rating. It really didn't. While there, I noticed that Michigan is in there at #8 in the rankings with 21 commits.

If there was ever a time for a green light sale on recruits, Michigan would be the host. Can't believe there isn't an exodus there the way they are playing (awful). Why does this happen to us while not them? I hear 1) Harbaugh wants back in the NFL, and 2) Michigan wants Harbaugh out.

DCTF lists him at 6-0 270 4.8 has size and weight so depends on his motor and want to.
