And that's exactly why no one should make a big deal of a verbal commitment made in May. Yet day after day there it is. Players go on Twitter and announce their 10 finalists, and "no interviews please" or "respect my decision." And recruiting gurus make a big deal of it when kids announce at school or at the city pool or wherever. Here is how those verbals should be handled:

Billy Joe Smith said at a ceremony at Podunk High Tuesday that he was committing to play football at State U next season. Signing Day is Feb. 4.

Period.

No crystal balls, no June recruiting rankings, no fanfare. Let the kids Tweet whatever they want. But because we make a huge issue of it, it's out of control. And I'm as bad as anybody, getting excited because a couple of kids said in April they were committing to Texas.

SMH, mainly at myself.

Faaaaaaaccckkkkk. Well that sucks
Fitting. Because it's 6:51 and OU SUCKS!

Seriously, Tatum's "commitment" to Texas was good for something –along with Thompson and Rising, it showed that Herman has definitive impact in enemy territory. \m/

The numbers tell us that the vast majority of recruits stick with their initial committment. Also getting them is important for momentum even if some recruits are not willing to commit right then it sends a positive message and it is indeed a fact that elite talent likes to play with elite talent. So getting early committments is not just necessary it is a priority.

If we win anything can happen. We could have the number one recruiting class in the nation in August but if our production on the field isn't good we could fall back to 30 in February. The most interesting aspect of this flip is how soon it happened after big game bob retired. This seems to be a case of whose not the coach at OU more than who is the coach. That should deflate Stoops big head a little and that makes me happier than a June verbal commitment.

And how many of Texas' current verbals have flipped after making a verbal somewhere else? A couple anyway. So if getting an early, doesn't-mean-anything verbal is viewed as positive and a priority, then what kind of devastation or negativity does it do when/if they flip? I don't know that it matters either way, and the only momentum that does matter is the product on the field leading into the December early signing period. That's when things get real. Spring/summer verbals aren't worth the paper they are written on. Because they're not ... written on.

Well everyone considers Herman the next great thing and it's well documented that he is PUSHING HARD for early commits right now. And matter of fact he would prefer most of the class be full be the time the season starts. So I feel pretty good that my view aligns with a coach that everyone thinks..."Gets it"

It was a play off of this, which came from a movie you've seen before. :)

Horns need to get the momentum going again. That sucks about Tatum, but it's hard to pull a kid out of the bosom of mom of she wants you close. Well, it's hard for all others except Texas kids. Any possibility of a commit this weekend (whatever this weekend is)? Eagles, Jamison, Woodard, Waddle, Perkins...anyone?

A lot of time left...

Let's not forget that Texas has to win games and show that they have significantly improved under Herman.

We all understand the negative recruiting that happens when you don't win. I have full confidence that Herman will but the recruiting game is what it is.

"Oh, you can milk just about anything with nipples."  "I have nipples, Greg, could you milk me?"
