Texas landed their first 2017 commitment on Thursday when Tyler (TX) John Tyler wide receiver Damion Miller pledged to the Longhorns. Miller committed quickly after he picked up an offer from the Longhorns while visiting earlier this summer. He ranks at number 21 on the HornSports 2017 Top 50 and chose UT over offers from Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Houston, SMU, and Oklahoma State.

Especially with Hezekiah Jones’ commitment to Baylor, Miller represents an important pickup – he is among the elite receivers in the state. It’s also noteworthy to see Texas winning in East Texas following the offseason hire of Jeff Traylor. John Tyler HS plays in one of the toughest districts in the state, so concerns about Miller’s level of competition are not a factor.

Texas has success in spades at recruiting the wide receiver position and that trend now continues into 2017. A big time commitment also gives the Longhorns some needed recruiting momentum after sputtering a bit in the summer.

Film Analysis

Miller has a lengthy, lean frame (6’2, 200 pounds) with long arms and room to add weight. A versatile two-way player for John Tyler who can also line up at safety, Miller’s future is at the receiver position.

With a blend of quickness and size that allows him to play inside or outside, Miller is a home run threat who can score from anywhere on the field. Possessing good short area burst with smooth acceleration to create space in the short and intermediate game, Miller also has an after burner to easily create separation on deep routes and get behind the defense.

Miller is a natural pass catcher who does well in traffic and shows great skill when tracking the ball over his shoulder. His body control and leaping ability make him a threat on jump balls, and the East Texas star doesn’t mind mixing it up physically with defensive backs. As is the case with most high school receivers, Miller’s route running is a little rough around the edges, but his path of development is exciting.

Final Verdict

For Texas fans it’s fun to dream about what Miller’s development and maturation. A prospect with his size and athleticism, with two years of high school development still ahead of him, is a rare commodity. With the size college coaches covet and dynamic playmaking ability, Miller has an extremely high ceiling. If he realizes his potential, Miller could be an All-American type talent with a chance to go high in the NFL draft.

He'll be in consideration for the top 10 in Texas. He is probably closer to 200 pounds currently and compares in size and frame to Dez Bryant coming out of Lufkin.

Measurements were all over the map so I couldn't find an accurate one. I agree he has the chance to improve his stock the most. Kid is just a baller. Also, regarding your earlier comment I don't think it's that he doesn't take early commitments he just sees the majority of them for what they are. Reservations.

Good get, although I was under the impression that Strong doesn't want early commits.
He wants early commits if the recruit is sure about his commitment. He encourages recruits to take other visits if they're not sure.

He doesn't want recruits to park here and after the season is over start taking other visits like LSU recruits.

He's always going to have a few that commit early. At Louisville he never had more than 5 commits before July 1st of that recruiting year.

I've said several times don't expect more than 5-8 commits for the '16 recruiting class heading into July. We have 6 commits right now. I expect the same thing in the '17 class, we will have about 5-8 commits at this time. I posted the #s below that prove this. It isn't a claim there's years of data, even during his time at Florida, that Strong doesn't take a bunch of early commits.

'11 class

Bolin-9/22/11

Thomas-2/17/13

Benjamin-12/16/12

Nelson-12/16/12

Bridges-6/16/12

Clark-2/3/13

-13 out of 18 commits came after July 1st of that given recruiting year.

So the most commits Strong took in a given class before July 1st was 5. To put this in perspective, look at the #s for certain teams in May of this year. FSU has 14 commits already, Ohio State 15, Miami 21, Georgia 12, Ole Miss 13, Kentucky 16, UCLA 10, Michigan State 12, Duke 11, Tennessee 10, Florida 11, Maryland 10, and so on.

Starting with Timmons in 2009

5 WR's in 2010

2 in 2011

3 in 2012 (includes Daje Johnson)

3 in 2013

5 in 2014

4 in 2015

Hemphill, Johnson & now Miller waiting in the wings

There are 23 wideouts over 6 years on that list. While some have been very good, the overall numbers suggest quantity not quality. How quickly Strong, Norvell (and Koenning) change that trend, could dramatically boost offensive production.
