2017 Recruiting Thread Part 1

SportsDay's Tim Cowlishaw answered questions in a live chat Thursday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Texas baseball losing its luster? Sure took them a while to find their next head coach.
Tim Cowlishaw: It takes them awhile to find all their coaches these days. Even coordinators.

Question: What does it say to you that Charlie Strong and Texas are the ones poaching most of these ex-Baylor commits? I'm a little surprised to not see A&M grab one, or even OU and TCU (though I've read that they were in contention for a couple of those guys).
Tim Cowlishaw: A&M got the QB who's playing for IMG, so Aggies are in the Bear hunt, too. Thought OU was supposed to get someone, I guess that hasn't happened.

Question: How long until you think Texas is back where its fans expect it to be?
Tim Cowlishaw: How many more Baylor recruits can Charlie drag out of Waco? I think it's going to take awhile. And hard to know what "expect it to be" means. Is that playing for a national championship? Or is a more realistic always in the top 20, occasionally in the top 10 type of thing? That should be expected. Not sure Charlie will get there, certainly not likely to this season. But if the Longhorns upset Notre Dame, all bets are off.

Question: What does Texas' plundering of the Baylor signing class say about Texas' status in the Big 12 moving forward?
Tim Cowlishaw: It means they had room for more good, young players which we already knew. Is it plundering, though? Kids deserve a chance to go to college and play football. They don't want to go to Baylor for understandable reasons. Texas had some openings. We'll find out in three years if it really added anything.

Seems fair and balanced to me. No media bias outta that guy!!

So he does not think Strong gets it done at the highest level here. Interesting and a fair assessment at this point.

we are all familiar with how warmly the nfl receives many of charlie strong's players, with numerous examples of players going high in the draft who weren't particularly coveted coming out of high school.  charlie's players – the ones who can stay on his teams – are noted for their high level of discipline.  those men are men, and you can count on them.  also, to a one, they are for-real football players.

that thought in mind, it's interesting to take a peek at a particularly good player we all know from the art briles discipline tree and see what the nfl seems to think of him . . . from a distance these days, as he's a free agent.

first his nfl summary to date (from wiki):

Career history

Dallas Cowboys (2014)*

Minnesota Vikings (2014)*

Chicago Bears (2014)

Miami Dolphins (2014)*

Minnesota Vikings (2014)

* Offseason and/or practice squad member only

a more detailed look at his whirlwind career (again wiki):

Dallas Cowboys

Selected in the seventh round (248th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys.  After earning praise from head coach Jason Garrett for his play in the preseason game against the San Diego Chargers where he registered 12 tackles, he was late for the walk-through practice before playing the Baltimore Ravens, which led to the team suspending him for that game.

Even though he made the initial regular season roster, after being late for a team meeting on September first, he was waived the same day to make room for C. J. Spillman.

Minnesota Vikings (first stint)

The Minnesota Vikings signed him to their practice squad on September 3, 2014.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears signed him from the Vikings practice squad on September 8, 2014.  He was released on November 18, to make room for Marc Mariani, after registering four special teams tackles and a fumble recovery in five games.

Miami Dolphins

On November 25, 2014, he was signed by the Miami Dolphins to their practice squad.  He was cut on December second, to make room for linebacker Jake Knott.

Minnesota Vikings (second stint)

On December 6, 2014, he was signed to the Minnesota Vikings practice squad.  On December 17th, he was promoted to the active roster, filling the spot vacated after offensive tackle J'Marcus Webb was waived.  He was released on May 7, 2015.

i don't care if you do have a lot of talent, the nfl has no use for you if you have no sense of discipline.  it's important to be where you're supposed to be when you're supposed to be there, for instance.  couple of important misses on that and you are gone with the wind.  that happened to him at dallas, and now he isn't even on someone's practice squad.

you know, the funny thing is i'm not aware of disciplinary problems while in the employ of player's coach art briles, as he was an all-american at baylor.  did all that trouble begin his first day in the league or did he somehow manage to stay in art's good graces?  or maybe art was just that good at giving second chances.  maybe his second chances came on rolls.

here's what that player is looking like post-baylor: arrested.

art briles.  player's coach.  he squeezed everything he could squeeze out of that kid and gave him nothing in return.  meanwhile, we are all familiar with how warmly the nfl receives many of charlie strong's players.
