Friday Five: The top five schools I'd consider as a top recruit
Every Friday, the Friday Five will rank something in the world of college football -- anything and everything from the logical to the illogical. This week we rank the five schools we'd consider were we a top recruit.
A couple of months ago while we were getting ready to record one of the Eye On College Football podcasts, Chip Patterson and I got into a conversation. The center of the discussion was, if we could go back in time and do it all over again, where would we want to go to college?
It was an interesting question and an interesting discussion. Frankly, I'm not entirely sure why we didn't record an entire podcast on that subject alone. Since we didn't, I decided to bank the idea for a future Friday Five, and today that future has arrived!
So in this week's Friday Five, I'm going to pretend that I'm a five-star recruit in the class of 2015 with his choice of schools. Seriously, everybody wants me. Each day when I wake up and walk out my front door there's a brand new car just sitting there waiting for me.
But how will I decide where to go?
Well, admittedly, the free cars help, but there are a lot of factors that will go into my decision. None of them are education. Hell, not even football success matters that much to me. Yeah, being on a really good team would be nice because winning is fun, but I want to have just as much fun off the field as I do on it.
I'm making my decision based on where I have to live for the next four years, my college years. I want to look back on them kindly, and not just when I'm thinking of playing football.
5. Wisconsin: I'd understand if this is a surprising pick to you, as Wisconsin isn't exactly what you'd consider a warm-weather state. The school year goes from fall through the spring, which means the weather will range between "cold" and "still cold, but not as cold as it was before, so it at least feels warm in relation and it's not snowing, so that's nice." But keep in mind I am from Chicago, so winter isn't something that scares me.
Besides, the real selling point of Wisconsin is Madison. Have you ever been to Madison? I have, and I had some very good times while there. There's not much to do when it's cold out other than party to keep warm, and they know how to party in Madison. Plus, the football team has been pretty good too, so I'll win some games while in town too. It's a win-win.
4. Miami: Do I really need to explain this one? I mean, there's a reason LeBron left Cleveland for Miami a few years ago, and it wasn't just to win an NBA championship. It's Miami. Yeah, the humidity of South Florida isn't my favorite thing in the world, but at least there are all the beaches and, you know, Miami. Also, after having seen the 30 for 30 on the old Miami teams, as well as having read some books on the subject, it's an incredibly appealing place to me. Plus, I'd get to say I'm from "The U" during introductions once I reach the NFL because I'm totally going to get drafted, you guys.
3. Arizona State: The way I picture Arizona State in my mind is that going to school there is basically like being on spring break for nine months a year. It's a party school. While there may not be the beaches of Miami, there's also an amazing lack of humidity, and I can deal with a nice, dry heat. Also, while it's not a national power or anything, the football program has certainly improved the last few seasons under Todd Graham.
2. Oregon: Let me just start by saying that the least appealing part of playing for Oregon would be the uniforms. If I were doing a Friday Five on my favorite college football uniforms, Oregon wouldn't even get an honorable mention. I'm not even sure the Ducks would crack a Friday 25.
But everything else about Oregon I love. The location of the campus, the success of the football team, Autzen Stadium, the cheerleaders, all that free Nike swag: it's all great. It'd just be a great way to spend four or five years of my life. Or three, depending on my draft status; because again, I'm going pro.
1. Texas: I was somewhat torn between Texas and Oregon for the top spot, but in the end I had to go with the Longhorns. Not for any reason related to football, or the history and tradition, though. It's just, at the end of the day, I couldn't say no to the prospect of spending a few years in Austin. It's really that simple. Everything else about being a Longhorn is secondary. So if you're reading this, Charlie Strong, I'm ready to commit right the hell now. Just make the offer.
Honorable Mention: USC, Florida, Colorado, UNLV, Ohio State
