Couldn't help but notice Bedford looks a little Erklesque in this clip.  Nice.

If you recall this QB from last month ("Growing up, I was a big Texas fan")

Oregon may be backing off of him.

And he just got followed by Watson on twitter.

A couple recruiting notes.

1-Deionte Thompson qualified to state in track. Deionte and his dad are suppose to visit Strong when they come to Austin. The Ags were sure correct about Strong screwing himself in the "Golden Triangle" (sarcasm).

2-Kai Locksley still says Texas is very much in the mix. His family apparently has a good relationship with Strong.

3-Newsome ran a 10.37 in the 100 yesterday. Talk about speed.

After the first play in the video, I liked how he kind of skipped along after the defensive player after he pretty much dominated him ... I also noticed that nobody had the audacity to make fun of him for said skipping, either!  ;)

Charlie Strong tapping into out-of-state connections in recruiting

Bob Wager was 27 and at his first job at Class A Tolar when newly hired Mack Brown stopped by with his Texas coaching staff. Tolar didn’t have a single Division I prospect. But Brown and his assistants made a point to establish a connection with Wager and his players.

“Can you imagine being a 27-year-old first-year coach, and the University of Texas comes through your town? I was beside myself,†said Wager, now head coach at Arlington Martin. “And I never forgot it.â€

Brown would grow those connections deep into the Lone Star State. From 2002 to 2013, nearly 92 percent of UT signees were in-state products. Of those 236, 156 were four- or five-star prospects, according to Rivals.com.

Brown’s successor, Charlie Strong, has also initially tapped in to the state’s fertile recruiting ground. But Strong hasn’t shied from reaching beyond the state’s borders for recruits since taking the job in January.

He signed his first class of Longhorns about a month after replacing Brown. It included 17 Texans and six out-of-state prospects, the highest number of out-of-state signees in at least 12 years. Rivals and Scout.com maintain signing class data as far back as 2002, when Texas signed five out-of-state players.

After arriving in Austin, Strong landed commitments from Lakeland, Fla., defensive tackle Chris Nelson and Hilton Head, S.C., defensive tackle Poona Ford. He also recruited Alex Anderson, an offensive tackle from Louisiana. At Louisville, Strong signed 30 players from SEC states his last two seasons.

Those out-of-state connections have held Strong and staff over until they can gain a foothold in Texas, said William Wilkerson, who covers Texas football and recruiting for Scout.com.

“[initially], he got into a lot of high school doors [in Texas],†Wilkerson said. “I think he’s still a little bit behind the eight ball. What he’s done in the process is he’s used what he knows. That’s the state of Florida, the Southeast and [recruiting] numerous kids from the state of Louisiana.â€

Strong has sealed nine recruits for the 2015 class, with eight coming from Texas. But according to Rivals, the Longhorns have extended 40 out their 90 2015 offers to out-of-state prospects. Strong’s initial shift toward out-of-state recruits could be attributed to a couple factors.

He didn’t take over the Texas program at its mid- to late-2000s peak. Vince Young and Colt McCoy have been gone for years. The Longhorns went 5-7 in 2010, before winning 25 games over the last three seasons and splitting the last two Alamo Bowls.

That plateau — after reaching the BCS Championship Game in 2009 — coupled with the rise of Texas A&M and Baylor has presented a different dynamic in the state recruiting scene.

“[Texas] A&M being in the SEC, that changes the landscape,†said Jason Howell, a recruiting analyst for Rivals. “It’s no longer go to the Big 12 and play for A&M and go to the Big 12 and play for Texas. It’s now, ‘I can go to A&M and play in the SEC.’ â€

Strong’s first coup at Texas was Edwin Freeman, a four-star safety from Arlington Bowie. TCU had an in on Freeman through his former high school coach, Kenny Perry, who coaches cornerbacks for the Horned Frogs but joined the program last year as a high school relations director. Eventually, Freeman chose the Longhorns over Texas A&M.

“That was a head-to-head win [against A&M] for them,†Howell said. “I don’t claim to know him personally, but from what I’ve seen, I think Charlie Strong is a lot like Coach [Kevin] Sumlin: He’s not afraid to go head-to-head against anybody. He’s going to give it a fight.â€

Aledo receiver Ryan Newsome received an offer from Texas in February. Newsome doesn’t have a favorite yet, but he said he respects what Strong has been able to do since being hired by Texas.

“He’s a nationwide guy,†Newsome said. “He’s going to recruit the state pretty hard, but he’s going to branch out. Texas is always a nationwide brand. They’ve always been able to get guys primarily in the state. It’s definitely cool to know that I’m a priority to [strong], especially since he’s a national guy.â€

Ultimately, the direction of Strong’s recruiting efforts could come down to how the Longhorns fare this fall. Their success — at least on the recruiting front — almost surely will.

“I think they’re trying to do what they can,†Howell said. “A lot of it will come down to the product that’s put on the field. If you’re not putting the wins on the table, then the chances are, you’re not going to have much buzz.â€

It appears we offered 2015 OT Madison Akamnonu (6'5, 270) Arlington, TX (Bowie)

Here is Longhorn Scott from couple weeks ago

DESOTO, Texas -- At the recent Dallas Nike Football Training Camp at Eagle Stadium, one of the most physically impressive offensive linemen was Arlington (Texas) Bowie offensive tackle Madison Akamnonu.

At a chiseled 6'5 and 270 pounds, the consensus three-star prospect has not yet seen his rankings reflect his upside, which is significant after he showed the athleticism and the overall body quickness to set in pass protection and the flexibility to sit comfortably in his stance -- in a drill that asked linemen to do that for as long as possible, Akamnonu was one of the last to give in.

With the start of the spring evaluation period, Akamnonu could quickly become a hot commodity on the recruiting trail as college coaches make their rounds in the state of Texas. Currently, the No. 78 offensive tackle nationally by 247Sports has offers from Arkansas State, Colorado State, Houston, Kansas State, Missouri, North Texas, Southern Miss, Texas State, Texas Tech and Wake Forest.

The Bowie coaches told OT Madison Akamnonu that he needed to call Texas last night, per 24/7.  Joe Wickline was by Bowie yesterday.OrangeBloods saying Coach Wickline spoke with OL Madison Akamnonu of Arlington Bowie last night and told him the staff would like to evaluate him further. They want him at the first summer camp in June.

Mack interested in UT

There's been plenty of fodder over the last couple of weeks about the strength of five-star defensive tackle Daylon Mack's commitment to Texas A&M.

He took down a background picture on his Twitter page of an 18-wheeler with his picture on it and an Aggies logo, and it also no longer says he's a Texas A&M commitment on his Twitter profile like it did.

So HornsDigest reached out to the No. 2 DT in the country to get the latest and here's what he had to say.

"I'm still committed to them. I am looking at a couple of things right now though," Mack said.

Without even bringing up the Longhorns, Mack responded with this when asked if he could elaborate on what specifically he was looking at.

"Just some things in the process and some schools," he said. "I can't tell you all the school but Texas is one of them."

Apparently the Longhorns are going full-steam ahead in their pursuit of Mack, and have two of their most charismatic members going after him in 2015 DE commitment Charles Omenihu and defensive line coach Chris Rumph.

They've helped persuade Mack so much that he said he'd visit "at some point."

That's obviously good news for a Longhorns program that will need help up the middle with the likes of Desmond Jackson and Malcom Brown's time in Austin coming to a close very soon.

Texas has offered seven DTs in 2015.

Lockhart wants to visit Texas

While a number of top prospects used the spring to fly all over the place and visit a bevy of their college choices, Ennis defensive end James Lockhart only made one visit, to in-state school Texas A&M.

"It was a good spring, though I really didn't do much traveling," Lockhart said. "I loved my visit to A&M. It wasn't my first time being there, and every time I go there, I feel special. I enjoyed it, the whole coaching staff are enthusiastic about their jobs, and they let the players know how it is. I always have a great time, and they treat my family and me with great respect.

"As far as my overall recruiting process, it's starting to pick back up more," Lockhart said. "We start spring ball now and it should be a good experience for me."

As a player who truly loves the game, throwing on the pads can't come quickly enough for the pass-rusher.

"I'm really excited, man," Lockhart said. "Our head coach told us Monday that we'd just jump right into it and go full pads. I'm ready to do something physical."

And teams are ready to see Lockhart display his physical nature. This week, he said Baylor, Texas A&M, Alabama and Ohio State were expected at Ennis, with Texas coming either this week or next.

"Just about every school I can think of is coming by," Lockhart said. "I'm really excited and fired up about it."

Unlike a lot of players who go into spring ball needing to impress those college coaches to earn an offer, Lockhart has offers from just about everybody. He said that advantage allows him to focus solely on football.

"My mindset is just to get better," Lockhart said. "The coaches are coming out, and I'm happy and blessed. But I'm going to going to practice to try as hard as possible to get better, to try to learn, to take mental reps when I'm not in and perfect my technique."

At a recent combine, Lockhart measured 6-foot-3 and 252 pounds, and he's been clocked in the 40-yard dash in the 4.7-second range. That size and athleticism has led colleges to recruit him for all manner of systems. Texas, for instance, views Lockhart as a strong-side end, somebody who can set the edge in the run game. But Alabama is recruiting him as a 'Jack' linebacker for its 3-4, with the option to spin him down to the defensive line in pass-rushing situations.

Lockhart's versatility has made him arguably the top defensive end in the state and a prime target for a number of schools. And that includes Texas, a place that he hasn't visited since the coaching change.

"I really do want to go to Texas," Lockhart said. "The timing just hasn't worked out. Yesterday was my prom, so the weekend of the spring game, I had to go out with my mom and dad and go prom shopping, so that came up.

"I really want to go. I haven't been down there since Coach Strong got down there," Lockhart said. "I met him when he came by my school, and they're still interested … I actually talked to Texas yesterday. They said they're actually going to send the DC and the d-line coach this spring."

It doesn't hurt that the Longhorns have already landed one of the state's top ends in Rowlett's Charles Omenihu, who Lockhart called "a good friend."

"He texted me a few hours ago and told me that the d-line coach is really fired up about me, and that they want to get me down there for a visit," Lockhart said. "They'd love for me and Charles to come, and they've said there's a chance for us to play early.

"They said we could get some playing time as freshmen, then as sophomores, the position could be ours," Lockhart said. "They have a lot of older guys at end currently."

Lockhart said the visit to Austin likely wouldn't occur sometime in the next 3-4 weeks while spring ball is going on, but said he would probably make the trip during the summer, along with possible trips to Arkansas, LSU and Alabama. (Flaherty)

Martin ready to commit?

It appears that the Longhorns are losing out on their chances of landing four-star running back Kameron Martin (Port Arthur, Texas/Memorial).

Martin, who grew up a Texas fan and still has UT stuff hanging in his room, is leaning toward Florida State now… in a big way.

In speaking with Martin on Sunday it became clear that Texas is going to have to get on board quickly if they intend on offering him after he told HornsDigest that he intends on committing this summer after he makes a few visits.

Martin is fully aware that Texas' staff is focusing on the 2015 class right now and is still getting a handle on things, and he respects the process. But Florida State is coming after him hard and it's hard not to buy what the defending national champions are selling.

I will say that I believe Texas can make things interesting if it does offer soon. The Longhorns haven't offered a running back in 2016 yet and have only offered 11 players in that class.

As a sophomore Martin rushed for 1,047 yards and 14 touchdowns to earn 21-5A Second Team All-District honors. [Wilkerson]

Has Texas found its kicker?

If the Longhorns do take a kicker in 2015 it will likely be Andrew Galitz (Rowlett, Texas). The two sides met at Texas' spring game where they showed mutual interest in each other.

"They said that they would offer a punter and that I was at the top of their list," Galitz said. "They were just waiting to see me this spring. They said they were really interested in me and want to keep in touch."

Galitz was recently seen in a Youtube clip smashing 60 and 65-yard field goals so would it matter to him if he was only recruited as a punter?

"That's fine," he said. "They also said I could compete for the field goal position right now but said I'd start right off the bat if I came in as a freshman for punting."

Galitz actually didn't kick field goals for Rowlett last season because their was a senior in front of him. But he had a 67-yard average on his kickoffs and a 36-yard average on his punts.

Going back to that Texas visit, Galitz came away more impressed than he thought he would and really likes the Longhorns right now.

"I loved it . It was probably one of the top colleges that I went to this spring," he said. "They are in my top three schools that I would like to go to along with Texas A&M and LSU."

Galitz went on to say that he liked Texas' campus the best, then Texas A&M's out of all the places he visited this spring, which included Oklahoma and LSU too.

According to Galitz, Texas A&M told him they were looking at five kickers and were going to offer the one they thought looked the best this spring.

"LSU told me they were looking to offer a punter, that I was one of their main guys and that they really wanted me to come to their camp," Galitz said.

The Longhorns have a leg up on the competition (no pun intended) in that Galitz's teammate is 2015 UT commitment Charles Omenihu. [Wilkerson]

Wooten intrigued by Longhorns

When 2016 Marble Falls quarterback Brennen Wooten made his way to Austin for the Texas Spring Game, it marked his third visit over the Longhorns' 15 spring practices. But that level of familiarity didn't stop him from enjoying himself.

"It was a great atmosphere," Wooten said. "I think that they struggled a little bit on offense just because everything's new to them. You'll see them grab a hold of it in the summer. I feel like that team can be really good."

As a quarterback, Wooten spent those practices, and the spring game, with an extra eye on that position. And while the spring game was somewhat marred by inconsistent play at that position, Wooten said he thought the Longhorns would be good at that position moving forward.

"Watching Swoopes this spring, I definitely see a guy that can be a very good quarterback," Wooten said. "I think David Ash is also a very good quarterback, and I think he can help the team.

"We'll see what happens," Wooten said. "I don't know if a transfer or David or Tyrone will take the job. But whoever will help that team and help them be very good."

The spring game wasn't just about watching football, as Wooten took the time to visit with quality control assistant Riley Dodge and with assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson. He said they didn't have long conversations, but added that Watson is planning to swing by Marble Falls on Tuesday.

"He said he just wanted to say hello, and that he didn't want to go into the game without saying hi," Wooten said. "We just chatted a little bit. He told me what all he would show at the game, how especially with the new staff, he didn't want to show too much. Just little stuff like that."

While Wooten made it to three Texas spring practices, the Longhorns are far from his only suitors at this point. UCLA, Oklahoma State, Baylor, LSU and Notre Dame have all expressed interest in the 2016 signal-caller, among others. Several of those schools will head out to see Wooten throw this spring, with offers potentially to come.

"I think this spring is huge for me," Wooten said. "Going into my junior year, this is a big-time recruiting time for me. A lot of colleges are going to be coming here to watch me play, so it's a huge time for me to show them what I can do." (Flaherty)
