2015 Recruiting Season is in full swing

Here is Jeff Howe on "why four-star prospect Kris Boyd so important to Texas"

http://texas.247sports.com/Bolt/Why-is-four-star-prospect-Kris-Boyd-so-important-to-Texas-34869640

The need to impress Gilmer four-star cornerback prospect Kris Boyd on his official visit over the weekend was made more important for the Texas Longhorns by the close of business on Sunday.

The No. 96-ranked prospect in the country according to the 247Sports Composite rankings is one of the top remaining targets on the board for the Longhorns because he's an outstanding prospect. He might have the most upside of any defensive prospect in the state with his natural man cover skills and athletic ability making for a potential bright long-term future in the secondary.

Texas is one of several schools in the mix for Boyd – Baylor, Texas A&M and Florida State are also alive – but the Longhorns need cornerback depth in addition to needing someone who can play the nickelback role. That role is critical with as many three-man front as the Longhorns employ and four-star athlete Tim Irvin (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) flipping to Auburn, which occurred on Sunday, makes landing Boyd even more important.

The 5-foot-11.5-inch, 185-pound Boyd has a skill set that translates extremely well to the nickel position and he'd be in the mix for that job as a true freshman, which is why now it's even more important for the Longhorns to land him. The nickelback role is one a line of Longhorns from Nathan Vasher to Kenny Vaccaro have thrived playing and it's a role Irvin was expected to fill after Quandre Diggs played it so well in 2014 and Boyd is a good candidate to carry the torch.

There's also a chance current cornerback commit Davante Davis (Miami, Fla./Homestead) could follow Irvin to Auburn. That occurance would put the Longhorns in even more of a desperate need for help in the secondary.

Boyd and fellow weekend official visitor Holton Hill (Houston Lamar) could both go a long way towards repairing the cornerback depth chart on the Forty Acres. The Longhorns will lose Duke Thomas and Sheroid Evans after the 2015 season and 2013 four-star signee Antwuan Davis is coming off of a foot injury, leaving Bryson Echols as the only non-starter who returns from this past season and played somewhat significantly.

Boyd and Hill could play early if they were to pick Texas, not just with Boyd at the nickelback position but their presence would allow Chris Vaughn and Vance Bedford the ability to substitute more freely, particularly if one of the cornerbacks on the field is struggling. That's not a luxury the Longhorns had this season, but landing Boyd and Hill would go a long way towards rebuilding the depth at a position that's historically been strong at Texas.

He's clearly a need for many reasons and the Longhorns will work hard until the bitter end to add him to the fold. Boyd's next official visit will be to Texas A&M next weekend. Boyd's Crystal Ball is trending towards the Longhorns with 66-percent of the picks being in favor of Texas, and sources continue to indicate to Horns247 the Longhorns have a strong chance of landing the Gilmer standout.

Newsome is well-suited for the slot, but may have even more value as a PR

Randy Rogers says he is the best PR in state the last 2 seasons.  And the Tennessee people thought he was best PR in country.

Can you imagine if, instead of fair catching every single punt, we had a legit threat back there to take it to the house every time?

In this film, he grabs a punt around :44 second mark

That 2nd video is very revealing. Thanks for posting.

I did not know Newsome was that fast.

He seems the embodiment of one of my favorite football sayings…

"If he's even… he's leavin'"

what are the perecentage chances of UT landing Hill???

This may be a stupid question, but did Tim Irvin actually enroll at Auburn yet? If he didn't, how is he hosting Davis when he visits?

When it comes to the proper paperwork I don't think that's a problem at auburn. Or likely anywhere else in the SEC West

If you think about it, Strong and Watson are actually playing this recruiting class quite brilliantly. No, it doesn't appear that you're recruiting or receiving a transfer from a day one starter. However, with all of the offensive threats he's going to be surrounded with, it would be hard for even the most average Quarterback not to find some success.
Agree 100%. Very good point.

If this class ends up with the offensive recruits it just looks like it might… plus with the Norvell hiring… and considering that Charlie does not like to loose,… and figuring that Charlie knows:
  • He needs to play the percentages. He can’t end up in the same position offensively he did in 2014. The honeymoon is now over.
  • He’s already got a 2 time TX state champ zone-read QB on the roster from a big time school. (Think… not 2A)
  • He’s got a S&C coach that WILL deliver him a team come regular season that can run up tempo… and circles around the other team
  • He has a new Asst Coach (Norvell) that can help Watson install an up tempo spread offense
  • He’ll have a defense that can hold the other team below their season averages… and will make sure gets more turnovers in 2015

Then, I see Texas going to a lot more up tempo spread zone-read in 2015 with Heard at the helm… especially if Kai Locksley commits… giving Texas potential insurance if the backup cannot adequately perform. As this article states: “Locksley is a dynamic runner. He has good vision and can be lethal running the zone-read.â€

Again… Charlie knows he needs to play the percentages… and implement a system the players he currently has can execute… and win at.

Assuming this… I am very optimistic about the 2015 team… and see the critical element actually being the offensive line. This is why I also see Richmond as a key commitment in this class.

If Wickline can pull things together… the 2015 team can go far, IMHO.

Don't count at all on Strong moving to an up tempo spread with the zone read. Won't happen

However, I would look for them to tweak the offense to take advantage of the quarterback skills they have, so more QB runs and zone reads will be in it.

Strong wants an offense that can control the football. the HUNH spread just won't do that.

Agree, I don't ever think UT will be a full-time spread/HUNH.

But, it can and will be a nice change of pace for us, especially if our QB can loosen up the defense with accurate mid to deep passing.

Chip had a free article about the Jay Norvell hire. He pointed out that OU has been a model for a multiplicity offense. When CS was hired, he mentioned that he wanted to have an offense like Stanford, Auburn, and OU.

The OU offense combined the best of pro style (power running with two backs and two TEs) and the spread (getting space players the ball in space).

One of the biggest movers in that updated Rivals ranking was Horn commit Anthony Wheeler

He moved up from #238 to # 76 (up 162  spots)

"Long and angular and very good at moving forward and taking good angles, Wheeler covers a lot of space and loves to hit. He arrives at the ball with force, plays with good pad leverage and gets skinny when he needs to without being afraid to take on blockers as well. He was one of the biggest surprises at Under Armour." -- Farrell

"Wheeler was another linebacker who made his presence felt, but in a different way than Lewis. Sure, the new Texas commit can come up and hit, but he's far more athletic and covers ground so well. Wheeler has long arms and legs and does an excellent job of coming up like a missile to make a hit or to get sideline to sideline and wrap up. He's bouncy and moves so well for someone his size and that's why he was so successful during the Under Armour week." -- Gorney

what are the perecentage chances of UT landing Hill???

Hill has already OVd with Texas, FSU and LSU.  He has Baylor this coming weekend.

He is getting an in-home today from aggy -- Sumlin, Terry Joseph and Clarence McKinney.  He has no OV set with aggy but, if he wants, he still has time to OV there.

His buddy Kris Boyd's top 4 are Texas, aggy, Baylor and Bama.  So, the overlap of top schools on both their lists is two (possibly three by the end of the day).

All the reports on his and Boyd's visit say it went very well.

The CB sits at 71% Texas.

The last 5 entries on the CB have all been Texas, including the last one by a Baylor guy.

The final 247 ranking is out

http://247sports.com/Season/2015-Football/RecruitRankings?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool

We currently have 6 who made the list

12. LB, Malik Jefferson (Mesquite Poteet)

An all-everything linebacker out of Mesquite, Jefferson committed to the Longhorns back on Dec. 19 along with teammate and fellow Top247 prospect DeAndre McNeal. Jefferson (6-3, 215) is expected to contribute for the Longhorns immediately after going through spring practice. Jefferson was an Under Armour All-American

136. LB, Anthony Wheeler (Skyline)
Wheeler made a significant jump in the rankings following his senior season and it was well deserved. Wheeler (6-2, 225) committed to the Longhorns in a head-to-head battle over the Oklahoma Sooners on Jan. 2. Wheeler was an Under Armour All-American.

148. OL, Patrick Vahe (Euless Trinity)
The most steady in his commitment of all the commitments, Vahe is slated to play on the interior of the offensive line for the Longhorns and has the potential to play as a true freshman for the Longhorns. At 6-foot-3 and 300-pounds, Vahe is physically ready to the grinding of the Big 12.

200. WR, DeAndre McNeal (Mesquite Poteet)
The 6-foot-2, 228-pound athlete will play on the offensive side of the ball for the Longhorns, specifically at receiver where Charlie Strong promised him the first touch of the 2015 season against Notre Dame. Close friends with Jefferson, McNeal committed to Texas moments before the five-star.

228. RB, Kirk Johnson (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian)
Also listed as an athlete, Johnson is slated to begin his career as a Longhorn on the offensive side of the ball as a running back. Speculation had him possibly moving to defensive back, which he says he is fine with, but Johnson compares himself to Marshawn Lynch as a running back and is where he is most comfortable. Johnson is 6-foot-0 and 205 pounds.

241. TE, Devonaire Clarington (Miami, Fla./Booker T. Washington)
The U.S. Army All-American committed to the Longhorns on national television during his all-star game and hasn’t looked back. Clarington is a major prospect at a need position in tight end and will have the opportunity to do big things for the Longhorns in run support and in the passing game.
