Please explain....Irvin decommitting?
One thing someone else wrote that made some sense when comparing the staff's patience with Burt vs. our apparent short leash for Irvin -- is that Burt was upfront and honest about everything going on with his situation while Irvin may have been more coy and not fully forthcoming with regard to his. That was just speculation, but it rang the bell of truthiness. Also, if you recall the 24 hour period before his announcement at the all star game (when he committed to us in front of his family and a national TV audience), he was supposedly not answering his phone (even from coaches). He may be doing that again. Not a good sign if true.
For his part, Burt supposedly phoned the staff the next morning after the de-commit with much regret. Nonetheless, the ways things are stacking up, Burt may still be standing when this version of musical chairs stops. Besides Lodge, I am still optimistic Strickland sets his visit and it is the same weekend as Wheeler.
Another thing about Irvin is the possibility that, if he does switch, it could ripple down to Davis who is still taking OVs. Davis is a big corner who seems to fit what Strong wants, so he would be big loss. And he looks to Irvin and wants to be on the same defense with him, as the string of tweets I showed a couple pages back shows. OTOH, we have been working hard to bring in several other highly ranked CBs, most of whom fit that same mold. And, from what I've read, we are in very good shape with Hill & Boyd.
The other Florida 5 guys aren't going to waiver. We just have to get a couple of them into school and keep them pointed in the right direction.
But back to Irvin, the problem that would remain is that Irvin himself is not easily replaceable, He fills the physical safety/nickel role (+ punt returner) while the other DB recruits coming in fill the man-coverage, boundary corner role. So, Irvin would be tough loss IMO. As we would be for him IMO, given our penchant for the 3-3-5 which he is perfect for. Call it a loss for both sides.
